Portage Wins Tourney With Victory Over CC
Portage used a full court press Saturday night to down the Columbia City Eagles and win the holiday tourney. The final score: 71-63. The Indians downed Wawasee 63-56 in the first game of the tourney to gain the right to play in the championship game. Wawasee also lost the consolation game to Lakeland 75-70.
In the championship game, Portage’s Pete Shaw led all scorers with 22 points. He was followed by fellow Indian Dave Alvarado with 18. Columbia City’s leading scorer was senior Greg Van with 17. He was followed by Randy Miller with 16. The first half of the game was even with the half-time score being 25-25, however, in the second half the Eagles fell to the Indians. Both teams had started the game slow with Columbia City taking a first stanza lead of 12-9. Portage led briefly in the second stanza, but Columbia City knotted the score just before half-time. The Indians couldn’t find the basket during the third quarter and the Eagles jumped to a quick 10 point lead late in the quarter. The Indians then put their full court press to work and made use of the host team’s mistakes as they closed the gap. The Eagles led 47-43 at half-time. The Indians continued the full court press in the fourth quarter and soon jumped into the lead. A press by the Eagles late in the quarter failed to turn the tide and the Indians came out on top 7163. Eagles Win The Eagles won the -right to play in the championship game by downing the Lakeland Lakers 88-69 in the second game of the afternoon. Greg Van led all scorers with 27 as he paced the Eagles. Alan

Wawasee Loses Two In Holiday Tournament By Tom Speicher Wawasee’s gift from Santa proved to be something other than hot basketball spirit as the Warriors dropped both the afternoon and consolation games last Saturday in the holiday tourney held at Columbia City. In the first game, the Warriors took on a very tough team from Portage. Playing excellent basketball in the early part of the game, the Warriors were only down one point at half time. Like happens often in basketball, the Warriors turned cold and were down by nine at the end of the third quarter. The final score of the game was 63-56 in favor of Portage. Steve Zurcher led the way in the scoring department for Wawasee with 29 points. Bill Cutter and Dave Elliott also deserve recognition for the excellent floor games which they played. Obviously not playing up to par, the Warriors were defeated in the second game also. This time it was by Lakeland 75-70. The game was close with the point spread never exceeding five, but the Warriors could not put together the needed rally. Dave Elliot, a 6-4 junior, once agafn played an excellent game as he came through with 15 rebounds and 10 points. Steve Zurcher had 14 points which is way below his season’s average of 27.5 points per game. Even though Wawasee lost both games all was not lost as both Steve Zurcher and Dave Elilott were chosen to the all-tourney team. Portage won the tourney 71-63 in the evening over Columbia City.

NEED 19 INCHES OF ICE FOR CAR Conservation officer Earl Money of Syracuse told this reporter last night that at least 10 inches of ice is necessary before a car can safely be driven on the lakes. Mr. Money stated with the present weather conditions persons venturing out on the ice should use extreme care. He cited one incident where a hole chopped in the ice widened considerably due to the lantern used in an ice house and asked that ice fishermen be especially careful. The conservation officer stated three, four and five inches of ice is enough to hold skaters, ice houses, etc., but warned of air pockets and springs which leave open spots in area lakes for sometime. The ice is -also dangerous when it is covered with snow as the snow serves as an insulation and keeps the water from freezing. Syracuse Driver Rams Fence Sunday Julia Newcomer, r 3 Syracuse, was injured in a single car crash at 7 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of CR 1050 north and 800 east. Miss Newcomer was taken to the Goshen hospital with lacerations and possible abdominal injuries. Miss Newcomer lost control of her car which ripped into a fence at Wawasee Prep.
