Births, deaths, weddings and anniversaries top the chronology for the year 1969 with other news events of the Lakeland area and the nation being listed. In January Dr. T. A. Miller was named to the Milford town board to fill the unexpired term of John F. Augsburger. Mr. Augsburger assumed his post as state senator the first of the year. Arnold (“Pete”) Doll was appointed to fill Dr. Miller’s seat on the Van Buren township advisory board. In February a fire was reported at Barth, Inc., in Milford. Steve Zurcher was named top scorer in the Northern Lakes Conference with a 21.6 average in conference games. General Dwight David

Mr. Cory is shown above looking at his wife’s Volkswagen which was struck in the rear by a car operated by Larry A. Scheuer, 24, Syracuse. Scheuer could not see the Cory vehicle because of the dense fog. Police estimated 11,500 damage to the Cory vehicle and >9OO to Scheuer’s car which is shown in the insert.' \ Mrs. Cory suffered bumps and bruises as well as a contusion to her right leg and whiplash injuries. A second accident occurred at the scene as John M. Scarbeary, 56, Syracuse, stopped to assist and his car was struck by one driven by Robert G. Buhrt, 40, r 1 Syracuse. Damages were listed at 1150 to the Scarbeary auto and |SO to the Buhrt car.

WAYNE TOWNSHIP ASSESSOR — Gerald Horrick is shown here being sworn in as Wayne township assessor at a brief ceremony at the county court house at Warsaw at 11:30 a.m. Monday. Horrick replaces the late Paul Oberli who held the post for nearly 15 years. Mr. Horrick was sworn in by county clerk, Bessie Himes. He will assume the office on January 2. On the right is Mazie Alexander, county recorder, who participated in the swearing-in ceremony. He served with the Winona Railroad for 26 years, being president of the company when it discontinued operation. He operated the Warsaw-Winona bus line for seven years and was last with the Kauffman Oil Co. for 10 years. He has been director of the re-appraisal office in the court house since July 1,1968. Mr. and Mrs. Horrick reside at 515 North Columbia street, Warsaw, and are parents of a son, Dean, of Warsaw, and a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Jean) Reich, of Jacksonville, Fla.

July brought news of the astronauts walking on the moon and of their historic voyage in space. August brought the end of summer and the return to the classroom. Penn Controls To Close Line At Syracuse Penn Controls, Inc., will close the company’s assembly line, located at 601 south Huntington street in Syracuse, during the first two months of 1970, it was confirmed this week by Joseph P. Bradford, personnel director. He said the 16 employees and plant manager Glen Shear will be absorbed in the enlarged facilities at Goshen. A total of 50,000 square feet were added to the Goshen plant. Shear has been manager of the Syracuse division of the company during its 10-year existence. SPEND CHRISTMAS HERE Mr. and Mrs. Claude Kistler, Randy Kistler and Mary Ann Harris of Elkhart spent Christmas with Mrs. Mary Kistler at Syracuse.

Northern district commissioner Maurice Dorsey was voted chairman of the board of commissioners Monday morning at the court house in the last meeting of the year 1969. The motion was made by incumbent board president Harvey Anglin and seconded by Fred Gilliam. In a similar action, on a motion by Maurice Dorsey and seconded by Harvey Anglin, Fred Gilliam was voted vice chairman of the board. Increase Pay Appearing before the board were Stanley Scott, Francis (Bus) Likens and Loren Kruger, operators of the county’s three dumps. They askbd the board for an increase in pay, from $3,600 to $4,000 per year for attending the dumps. The board voted the increase as a “cost of living increase.” The board also voted to renew the contracts for all court house custodian help and to retain Robert Rasor as county attorney, Ed Funk, as veterans’ affairs officer, and Burton Retz as county highway superintendent. Make Purchases The commissioners awarded the contract for the El-Ray Addition bridge at North Webster to William Waltz, Inc., North Manchester, for $6,614.00. Other bidders included John Camden, $6,999.95, and Heavy Construction Co., Indianapolis, for $11,905.50. The contract for >a distributor to seal roads went to Reid Holcomb, Fort Wayne, for $10,650, with the other bidder, who did not meet specifications, at $9,220. A Diamond T single axle truck was purchased from Pierceton Equipment Co., Laketon, for $8,860, with the other bidder being W. W. Truck. Warsaw, for $10,650. And three dual axle trucks with blade and dump bed and snow plow attachments were purchased from W. W. Truck Sales, Warsaw, for $42,376.00, with the onlv other bidder being Pierceton Equipment Co., Laketon, for $43,000. The contract for a self-propelled pneumatic roller went to Panke Equipment, Indianapolis, for $7,544. Other bidders were Korte Brothers, Fort Wayne, $8,810; Ketchen Machinery, Indianapolis, $9,777; Stockberger Machinery, Fort Wayne, $8,160; and Indiana Equipment Co., Indianapolis, $7,963. BOOKED SUNDAY John Garcia of Milford was booked on Sunday morning by the Milford police department on charges of assault and battery. Bond was set at SSOO. He will appear in court on January 12.

MAURICE DORSEY Adrian Howell Is Tippecanoe Township Trustee Adrian Howell, well known Tippecanoe township resident, was named trustee for that township by the Kosciusko county board of commissioners on Tuesday after receipt of the signed resignation of trustee Willis Whisler. Whisler, who is completing the unexpired term of the late H. A. Ganger, has purchased a Lake Wawasee property and moved into Turkey Creek township. The petition recommending Howell for trustee was signed by the four precinct committeemen— Eddie Overmeyer, precinct 1; Duane Leedy, precinct 2; Kip Sullivan, precinct 3; and Kermit Summers, precinct 4—and presented to the commissioners on Monday afternoon by Mr. Summers. Howell, a resident of Whitville on the Oswego Road, operated The Barn south of North Webster for several years, and later owned and operated Ady’s Tackle Box in the uptown area in North Webster. MRS. STOWELL INITIATED Mrs. Frederick (Virginia Kay Arthur) Stowell was initiated into the Delta Kappa chapter of the Phi Alpha Pheta honorary history society. The ceremony took place in the Sharp chapel at Tulsa university recently. Invitation into the society is based on scholastic achievement in history courses and other academic work. Mrs. Stowell is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Arthur of 100 Medusa Court, Syracuse, and a 1967 graduate of Milford high school. She is presently a junior at Tulsa university, Tulsa, Okla.
Old Business John Auer, father of Nelson, has operated the business in Syracuse since 1935, a period of 35 years, and Nelson, a 1938 graduate of Syracuse high school, has worked with his father since 1945. John Auer, who observed his 84th birthday on October 29. made his daily trip to the station until this summer when he was unable.

DROWNING SCENE — This cold, stark scene marks the spot where Beverly J. Morris, r 1 North Webster, drowned Saturday night when the car in which he was riding crashed through thin ice on Kuhn lake, across from the Flowing Well on road 13 south of North Webster. The car was not recovered and the spot was frozen over on Sunday when this photo was taken.
Funeral Services Held For Drowning Victim
Services were held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Elkview, W. Va., for Beverly J. Morris, 37, r 1 North Webster. Mr. Morris was drowned when the car in which he was riding went through the ice on Kuhn lake Saturday. Sherrill Stout, 34, also of r 1 North Webster, escaped the certain death and tried to no avail to rescue Morris. The two men were apparently joy riding on the lake when the car plunged through the two inch layer of ice. The accident occurred opposite and about a quarter of a mile from the well known Flowing Well state park on Indiana 13 some three miles south of North Webster. The auto fell into the lake at approximately 5:45 p.m. Morris’ body was recovered by state police scuba diver Larry Yeiter at 8 p.m. The auto is in about 15 feet of water and is expected to remain there until the ice melts next spring. Morris was born at Charleston, W. Va., November 13, 1932, to Body and Pearl (Teal) Morris. He moved to North Webster six years ago from West Virginia. He was employed at Sea Nymph Manufacturing Company in Syracuse. He and Marjorie Clutter were married on May 2, 1958. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict and a member of the American Legion Herbert Kuhn 253 of North Webster.
He is now a rest home patient. Carl Wilkinson, a well known employee at the station, will become station manager, and Mr. Deerwester will become parts manager. All other employees will continue in their same jobs. Mr. and Mrs: Auer plan to spend February at Brownsville, Texas, and have no definite plans beyond the six month period.

f i SATURDAY FIRE — Approximately 15,060 damage was done to the D. F. Littler home at Oakwood Park on Saturday night, according to Syracuse fire chief Tom Strickler. Firemen were called at 10:15 p.m. At the time they were on a fire call at the Robert Searfoss home. Ronnie Zentz was sleeping at the Littler home when he heard an explosion in the house.
