THE BREAKTHROUGH—Wawasee Warrior star Keith Stichter is seen here lunging through the hoop as the Warriors came on the floor Friday night to meet North Manchester. The hoop is decorated as a holiday wreath.

WHS Adds Two Scalps To Its Trophy Chest

It was up and away for the Wawasee Warriors as they tallied up two. victories over the week end, and appeared to be off and running toward a good season. It was the Warriors over North Manchester on Friday night (71 to 68) in the big Wawasee high school gym for another Northern Lakes Conference win, and on Saturday night the locals motored to Huntington Catholic to rack up another win—this time 77 to 68. Wawasee 71—Manchester 68 The Friday night game did not always belong to the Warriors. Their close victory was due to the fact that they didn’t give up until the final gong. The scoring column didn’t tell all the story, either. For tall (6-3) Dave Elliott came off the the backboard with the ball a large number of times vieing against Dennis Young (6-3) and Jeff Barnett (6-2). Elliott got 12 rebounds while Stichter, a newcomer to the Warriors phalanx, got nine. Manchester held a 14-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, and the skill with which the visitors handled the ball made Warrior fans think they were in deep trouble. But in the second quarter the tide turned slightly, ending for the Warriors 32 to 25, and they held a 52-48 lead at the end of the third quarter. Coach Karl Merritt, an enthusiastic mentor and fan himself, was off the bench many times; in fact, at one point the referee stopped the game and asked him to keep his seat. Steve Zurcher was high with nine field goals and five free throw shots, for 23 points, while Garner led Manchester with eight field goals and two free throws for 18 points. The box score follows: WAWASEE (71)—Thomas 003, -Elliott 331, Stichter 233, Mikel 820, Zurcher 954, Barrett 220, Cutter 124, and Cumings 120.
