Warriors Bow To Tall Warsaw Tigers, 75-54

The Wawasee Warriors, riding high after their victory over Concord, failed to stop the Warsaw Tigers’ juggernaut Friday night at the Warsaw gym, and went down to a 75 to 54 loss. At times, however, the score was much closer, with the Warriors coming within four points of reaching the Tigers, but at no time closing the gap. The tall Essenberg boys, whose threat to leave Warsaw athletics behind for a seat on one of several neighboring teams brought a code of ethics for all Warsaw school athletics. For example, Kim, a 6’7” senior, got only five field goals and four free throws for 14 points, and Brian, a 6’6‘z” junior, got only one field goal and one free throw for a total of three points. Coming on strong for Warsaw were guard Randy Coplen who got 18 points for high, and substitute Greg Johnson (the coach’s son) whose sharp-shooting got 14 points for the Tigers. Held The Big Ones The assignment for holding the big Essenberg boys fell on Dave Elliot, himself 6 feet 3 inch, and he got his share of the rebounds, while Warsaw’s Coplen was successful in holding Steve

Zurcher, the Warrior’s star performer to four field goals. Along with this Zurcher got 15 free throws for a total of 23 points. In all, the zone defense paid off for the Warriors in holding the Tigers as well as they did. The first-quarter score ended 17 to 9 for the Tigers and the game at times looked like a rout, but at half-time the scoreboard read 37 to 26 for the Tigers. The third quarter ended 52 to 39, again for the Tigers. It should be said that the Tigers’ man-to-man was successful in the first quarter as the Warrior’s had a tough time getting their first field goal. The Tigers shot an incredible 49 per cent while the Warriors got only 24 per cent. The box score: WAWASEE (54) - Elliott 240, Stichter 033, Thomas 005, Zurcher 4-15-1, Mikel 142, Barrett 224, Cutter 305, Baumgartner 001, Elson 021, and Cummings 002. Totals: 12 field goals, 30 free throws and 24 personal fouls. WARSAW (75) — Deatsman 325, B. Essenberg 115, K. Essenberg 543, Coplen 663, Hanna 222, Watkins 310, Ressler 130, and Johnson 623. Totals: 27 field

goals, 21 free throws, and 21 personal fouls. Milford Seventh Graders Win Two Milford’s seventh grade basketball squad glided through two easy victories last week, smashing Whiteman of Goshen 42-12 and Union Center 38-19. Curtis Bender collected 15 points against Whiteman, followed by J. Yoder with eight and D. Wollman with six. Larry Speicher’s sticky defense caused numerous ball-handling errors. Nine of the 12 points for Whiteman were scored by Zentz. Strong board-play and good team defense caused Union to fall far short of the scrappy Trojans. Tim Yoder added the scoring punch for Milford with 10 points while both W. Carvajal and Larry Speicher closely followed with eight. Union’s high man was Fuller with eight. Milford’s seventh grade record now stands at 5-2. Milford’s seventh and eighth grade squads host two strong North Webster teams Thursday, Dec. 18, at 6 p.m. in the junior high gymnasium. SENIOR CITIZENS CHRISTMAS PARTY More than 160 members and guests attended the Maple City Senior Citizens Christmas party Wednesday. After the singing of carols, a reading, “The Christmas Story,” was given. Door prizes were given. A short business meeting preceded the entertainment. Attending from this area were, Mrs. Everett Butrick and Amanda Davisson of Milford and Mrs. Paul Ditchett of Syracuse.
