'Laugh-In' Character Wins Grand Prize At Milford

The little old man from television’s “Laugh-In” show won the grand prize at the annual Halloween festival held in Milford on Thursday night. Dressed as the old man was Andy Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brown of Milford. Judging the event, sponsored’ by the Lions club, American Legion and Auxiliary, were Mrs. Elmer Rapp, Bob Long and Richard Bender. Other winners were as follows: Witch — Dawn Young, first; Kathy Method, second; Blain Biller, third. Spacemen — Danny Kern, Johnny Jessop and Earl Evans. Clowns — Don Schrock, Lisa

SILVER THIMBLE CLUB ELECTS 1970 OFFICERS Officers for 1970 were elected at the meeting of the Silver Thimble club at the home of Mrs. Arnold Doll at Milford last evening. Mrs. Glenn Price, president, opened the meeting. Mrs. Phil Campbell called the roll and gave the secretary’s report. Mrs. Bernard Beer passed the charity box and Mrs. Robert Beer reported for the gift committee. It was voted to change the monthly meeting night to Monday. The club Christmas dinner will be on the evening of December 2 at Warsaw. Those on the committee are Mrs. Harlan Beer, Mrs. Fred Weisser, Mrs. Campbell, and Miss Esther Beer. The evening’s devotions were given by Mrs. Doll, who read “In Times Like These,” by Helen Steiner Rice. The members arose to sing “Did You Think To Pray?” The new officers are as follows: President - Mrs. Elmer Hartter Secretary - Mrs. Robert Beer Treasurer and Charity Box - Mrs. Charles Weisser Devotions - Mrs. Carlton Beer Soldiers’ Boxes - Mrs. Frank Beer, Jr. Reporter - Edith Baumgartner The hostess was assisted by Mrs. Jesse Beer in serving refreshments with a Thanksgiving motif. Turkey sandwiches were featured.

AREA WOMEN ATTEND HOLIDAY ON ICE Mrs. Rebecca Ross of Mechanicsburg, 111., Mrs. Amanda Davisson, Mrs. Theora Hull and Mrs. Helene Faulkner, Milford, and Mrs. Agnes Stiffler of Syracuse accompanied the Warsaw Senior Citizens to Fort Wayne on Saturday afternoon for the one o’clock performance of the Holiday on Ice. WILL JOIN HUSBAND Mrs. Barry Acree of Dewart Lake will leave Thursday, Nov. 6, for Hawaii where she will join her husband, Corporal Acree, while he is on rest and recreation leave from duty in Viet Nam. Cpl. Acree’s tour of duty in Viet Nam will expire in February. MASQUERADE PARTY HELD FRIDAY Mr. and Mrs. Jim Walter of r 1 New Paris entertained at a masquerade party in the barn on their farm Friday evening. The barn was decorated with traditional Halloween arrangements and bales of hay were used in place of chairs. WAWAKEECHIE HOMEMAKERS ENJOY DINNER The Wawakeechie Extension Homemakers club met October 22. The tables were beautifully decorated with mums. A pot luck dinner was enjoyed. Roll call response was “How I would spend $1,000”. There were 16 members and one guest present. History of the song of the month “Let There Be Peace on Earth” written by Jill Jackson and Si Miller was given by Mrs. Fred Banta, who told the members that 4-H clubs and other organizations had adopted the song. Garden remarks v\ere given by Mrs. W. E. Scheoff. Mrs. Ralph Clingaman presented the lesson “Decorating your home for entertaining”. Some very interesting points were brought up which are sometimes overlooked. The next meeting will be November 19. Mrs. Fredric Banta and Mrs. Ray Denzel will be the hostesses. Everyone is a coward, about some things, and justly so.

New Salem By MRS. RAT FERVERDA SUNDAY SERVICES On Sunday morning during the hour of worship the special music was presented by the girls’ sextette of the Wawasee high school — Becky Brown, Debbie Wolferman, Brenda Hurd, Betty Sorensen, Debbie Jessop, Vickie Arnold and pianist Connie Geiger. The three numbers presented by the girls were “One God,” “Good News” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” “Missed Opportunities” was the theme of the message delivered by pastor Michael Ostrander after reading scri> ture from I Kings 11-14. - NS—HELPING HANDS ENTERTAIN TUESDAY The Helping Hands of the New Salem church entertained Tuesday evening for women of the Milford community and other friends and neighbors. A short poem was read for opening the meeting by Mrs. Max Shively as she presided over the short business session. Prayer was offered by Mrs. Robert Hurd and an inspirational talk was given by Mrs. Michael Ostrander on self-improvements and verses of scripture were read. Mrs. Everett Tom, Jr., introduced the guest speaker of the evening, Mrs. Joe Ostendorf of Milford. She used the theme of “Something For Yourself” as she displayed her craft work and beautiful fall bouquets. She mentioned there was a spiritual blessing connected With each work of art. The closing prayer was given by Mrs. Frank Johnson. APPRAISAL OF MONROE SCHOOL DROPS TO S9OO Appraisal of the Monroe township school building has been dropped from $4,130 to S9OO, the Whitko school board announced on Monday night, due to lack of bidders. The two-story brick building is located on road 13 about four miles south of Pierceton.

Syracuse Police Chief Lists Halloween Helpers Syracuse police chief Orville Vanderßeyden announced that vandalism was cut down at Syracuse during Halloween and the days proceeding it by men who patroled the area forseveral nights. Helping were the Wawasee Area Jaycees, conservation officer Earl Money and Joe Thornburg. All donated their time, cars and gasoline for a two week period. Larry Kuneff of Mishawaka called at the Emory Guy home at Syracuse Monday.

FARM FIRES TAKE TOLL WEDNESDAY Two fires Wednesday afternoon within a half hour span caused an approximate $1,450 to corn pickers and tractors. The Miliord volunteer department answered a call at 4:05 p.m. to the Richard Hunsberger farm west of town where a self propelled com picker was on fire. Chief Harold Kaiser lists damages at an approximate $250. A short time later 4:35 p.m., the firemen answered a call to the Jesse Beer farm south of town where a com picker and -tractor belonging to Maurice Beer were totaled. The value was set at between SI,OOO and $1,200. Mr. and Mrs. Max Evans and daughters of Milford were guests over the week end of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kuespert and daughters of Lafayette. Mrs. Kuespert is a sister of Mrs. Evans.

Wednesday Afternoon Club Meets The Wednesday Afternoon club of Syracuse was entertained October 29 in the home of Mrs. Ernest Bushong. Mrs. Ray D. Jones, president, conducted the business meeting. Roll call response was “A country I should like to visit”. The program given by Mrs. Bushong, assisted by Mr. Bushong consisted of narration, movies and slides of their recent tour of Portugal, Spain and North Africa. Refreshments were served at a table decorated' in Spanish theme. There were 19 members present with Mrs. Danny Metzler of Nappanee as a guest. Mrs. Nelson Miles will be the November 12 hostess.
