WHEN IT HAPPENED IN SYRACUSE - ii .in I ONE YEAR AGO Members of the Syracuse, Mil- , ford and North Webster Lions clubs are preparing for a benefit auction to be held Saturday beginning at noon on the grounds of the Wawasee high school. Rev. Clarence R. Bitzer, 71, Oakwood Park, died in the Elkhart hospital of injuries received Thursday evening in a auto accident. Survivors are the widow, a daughter, three sons, two brothers, and 13 grandchildren. Mrs. John Darr, r 2 has been released from the Goshen hospital. Terry L. Ryman, who has been stationed at Fort Gordon, Ga., is spending a three-week leave with his mother, Mrs. Dale Roberts and other relatives here. Mrs. Ida Hibschman spent Friday at Garrett with her son, Herman Jensen and family. FIVE YEARS AGO The Halloween parade will start at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. Master of ceremonies will be Charles Searfoss. Jay P. Peffley will be among the 26 men and three women who will become members of the Northern Indiana Public Service Company’s exclusive quarter century club at a banquet to be held Thursday at Hammond. Fred Godshalk, 22, was injured in a one car accident on the Dewart Lake road at 2:45 p.m. Monday. He was taken to the Goshen hospital. Mrs. Ada May Spurgeon, 80, died in the Kendallville hospital Thursday. Survivors are two sons, a daughter, one brother, one sister and seven grandchildren. a, Mr. and Mrs. EmOTy Guy spent last week end at Morocco where Mr. Guy was employed 35 years ago. TEN YEARS AGO Town board members met on Thursday night with NIPSCo officials, 'E. M. Shork of Hammond and W. D. Myers of Syracuse, to discuss the possibility of bringing a natural gas line into the Syracuse area. Rev. and Mrs. Carl H. Satre and Mrs. W. Carl Satre accompanied the Vernon Beckmans to Fort Wayne on October 13 to a church dinner in Trinity Lutheran church. Mrs. George F. Weyrich, 95, died in her home at Mt. Shasta, Calif. She was a former Syracuse resident. Surviving is a son, two daughters, six grandchildren and three great - grandchildren. Miss Ethel Bowser, librarian here, was dismissed from the Goshen hospital Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Harry VanHemert have returned from Pella, lowa, where they were called by the death of Mr. Van-

FIFTY YEARS AGO John Auer and family and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schultz and children called at the William Wogoman home at Goshen Sunday afternoon. The Wednesday Afternoon club met last week with Mrs. L. T. Heerman and began the winter’s study. The next meeting will be in the home of rMs. Guy Jarrett. Mr. Bachman, director of the high school bdys band, took the band instruments to the Conn factory at Elkhart to have them «, looked over. Mrs. Henry Grieder, who has been seriously ill, was taken to the Elkhart hospital for an operation. Her brother Scott Hire of Gary is here, called by the illness of his sister. Natalie, a nine pound girl, was born Sunday to Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Marriott in the P. H. Miles home. _
