‘Shapes ’ Can Flash Messages of Safety To Motorist Who Knows Their Meaning
Signs helping the motorist to safety on the highways have distinctive shapes. What they mean can frequently be “telegraphed” — especially during inclement weather — to the ifiotorist who can recognize their meaning, even before he may be able to read lettering. Now, here is what each of the shapes mean: The upright rectangle, upper left, means that some special regulation, such as “Do Not Enter” or “Keep Off the Median” or “Do Not Pass,” is being flashed to you. The octagonal shape, center above, means unequivocally: “Stop.” The circle, upper right, carries a warning that you are ap‘Stay On Top Os Weather 9 Advice To Motorists ... Smart automobile owners make it a special point during fall and winter to “Stay on top of the weather.” This means knowing in advance not only what weather conditions may be tomorrow, but what they are like in the area toward which the motorist is headed on a longer than “just about town” trip. It is the car radio, of course, that is your “any time” pipeline to the wanted weather information, available from stations everywhere. When on a trip, one should have no difficulty in picking up broadcasts from stations in areas toward which the motorist is travelling. Think About Those Other Five Cars At least five cars besides your own should concern you while driving. They are the one ahead, the one behind, the one approaching in the opposing lane, the one ready to enter from a side street, and the one parked at the curb. Be prepared for any of them to do anything without warning. Driving requires that decisions be made almost constantly. Most traffic emergencies must be recognized and action taken in split seconds. Drive ahead — try to decide in advance what action is best at any place for each emergency that may arise. Try to drive in such away that you have plenty of time to make the right decision. Don’t crowd those split seconds by crowding the traffic — and your luck.
