Wawasee Looses Third Straight To Goshen 40-8

By Tom Speicher The Mail-Journal Sports Editor The Wawasee Warriors once again proved their first half weakness and the spirited Goshen Redskins put the game practically out of reach by halftime with an outburst of 48 points in\ the second quarter. the game opened with Wawasee returning the kickoff 26 downs, Wawasee marched down field, led by rugged fullback Roger Korenstra, to what appeared to be a sure touch down. However, when the <■ Warriors failed to get the first down on fourth down and one to go, the ball went over to Goshen. Using tricky cross-buck plays the Redskins quickly moved the ball upfield until the Warrior defense stopped them on the 14 yard line. On the crucial third down play, half back Dave Hess went off tackle for fourteen yards and the game’s first six points. The two point after attempt failed and the first quarter ended with Goshen leading 6-0. The second quarter started peacefully with both teams cracking heads evenly. This soon ended as the Redskins poured on a burst of offense which cracked the game wide open. After a long sustained drive, the Redskins opened the second quarter with Howard Delcamp carrying the ball in from the two yard line. The point-after attempt failed. Goshen kicked off, but a deadened Wawasee offense soon turned the ball back over to them. .With the Wawasee defense also seemingly in a daze, Goshen soon drove the ball down to the three yard line where Dave Hess got his second T. D. of the evening by going around end. The two point after attempt again failed, leaving Goshen with an 18-0 lead. The Warriors now realized that they would Tiave to work overtime to catch up. As the Warriors worked desperately to get in a score before half-time, Goshen defender Jim Fretz picked off a Warrior pass on the 16 yard line and ran into the end zone untouched for the third six pointer of the second quarter. Again the point after attempt failed and thus the first half ended with the Goshen Redskins leading 24-0. NEW SPIRIT Something happened during half-time that made .the Warriors gain new life spirit, and the will not to be beaten. As the second half got underway, the Wawasee Warriors looked like a completely different ball club. The second half started as kicker Rex Huntziger boomed the ball deep into Redskin territory. The Wawasee defense, led by senior linebacker Kent Wilson, was hungry and soon mauled Goshen into giving up the football. The Warrior offense also had decided to start anew and the backs fought downfield thru big holes provided by the offensive linemen. However, on the forty yard line, the Warriors were halted and forced to punt. Goshen received the punt and

soon proved that they weren’t for the Wawasee cause as they scored again — this time on a 33 yard pass play from Mike Clason to Jim Whitehead. This time the two point after attempt was good on another pass play. Wawasee refused to give up and was marching down field as the third quarter ended. The score was in favor of Goshen 32-0. With the ball resting on the Goshen 31 yard line and the fourth quarter under way, reserve sophomore quarterback Tim Blue was sent in to lead the offense — and this he did. On a combination of passes and Korenstra runs, he soon had the Warriors on their 42 yard line. On the next play Blue called a pass and hit the open arms of sophomore halfback Pat Spearman for a 42 yard touch down. On the two point-after attempt, Blue and Spearman again connected to make the score Goshen 32, Wawasee 8. f/ Goshen received they ensuing kick and the hungry Wawasee defense soon had thejn stopped on their own 34 yprtl line, where it was fourthxdowrr and a long way to go. yGoshep lined up in punt formation and as the ball was snapped from center, the Wawasee defense charged, hoping to block the punt. Instead of punting the ball, the Goshen punter, threw a pass to halfback Dave Hess, which resulted in a 66 yard touch down. The two point after attempt was again successful on an end sweep and thus the scoring for the evening ended — Goshen 40 - Wawasee 8. The rest of the game was an evenly matched, bone crushing, defensive duel. When the game ended, Goshen was the victor in a hard fought contest. Statistically, the game was quite the opposite of what the score indicated. In total rushing yardage, Wawasee led 116 to 101 yards. Total passing yardage found Goshen a narrow leader, 121-120. Offensively, Roger Korenstra was the big gun for the Warriors. The strong, 210 pound fullback had well over half of the Warriors’ total yardage with 74 yards. Also a tip of the hat is due to Tim Blue, Pat Spearman and Steve Coburn who sparked the Warriors second half offense. Defensively, Kent Wilson played a great game, leading the Warriors with eight solo tackles and five assists. Tackles Rex Huntziger and Lester Hammel were close behind with eight solo tackles each. Next week the Wawasee Warriors take on the Failfield Falcons before an expected large homecoming crowd at 7:30. Milford Downs Syracuse 18-0 WARRIOR FIELD - Eighth grade quarterback Mike Wollman, right halfback Mike Vanlaningham and a rugged defense combined to give Milford an 18-0 shut out over the Syracuse Yellow Jackets in a game played on the Wawasee gridiron Tuesday evening. Trojan Mike Vanlaningham scored once in the first, third and fourth quarters for Milford’s 18 points. Highlighting the game was the performance of a newcomer, Ralphel Ruiz. Ruiz kicked-off - three times for an average of 55 yards. He also returned a Syracuse kick-off for 45 yards. Quarterback Mike Wollman was busy hot only handing off, but rushing for a total of 65 yards. Defensive end Roger Emmons, tackle Matt Bodd ; ger, middleline backer Bruce Korenstra and cornerback Vanlaningham led the aggressive Trojan defense. Emmons was "successful in stopping

quarterback Mark Smith several times for a total loss of 32 yards. Korenstra, Boddiger and Jon Fisher pressured Syracuse backfield while Vanlaningham managed to break-up several Yellow Jacket passes and intercept one. Milford’s victory over Syracuse put the Trojans 2-2 in season play. Visit Your Child's Teacher LAFAYETTE — One of the most important persons in your child’s life these days is his teacher. Have you met her? It will be an interesting and pleasant experience, says Jean Zimmerman, extension human development specialist, Purdue university. Plan to visit the school soon, but be sure to call in -advance so the teacher will be expecting you. This will give her an opportunity to gather information about your child which she feels should be discussed. However, she may just want to get to know you during this first visit. If so, this can be just as valuable. Let her know you are interested. Let her know you are willing to cooperate. Beware, however, of influencing the teacher’s opinion about your child. Let them react to one another and form their own impressions.
