The purpose of this meeting was to solicit ideas and suggestions for a program of beautification for this city. The meeting was sponsored by the Ligonier Chamber of Commerce. The city council has been discussing a similar program with emphasis on cutting down the damaging smoke of the city dump. They recently enacted an ordinance that would fence in the dump with dumping of refuse only under the supervision of the attendant, Mr. Alley Alfrey. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and they are to be strictly enforced. FORMER RESIDENT ELECTED TO RMA A former Ligonier resident and a graduate of Ligonier high school, currently president of the Citizens State Bank, Hart-
ford City, was recently elected president of the Ohio Valley Chapter of Robert Morris Associates. Established in 1914, RMA is the only association dedicating its full enerUes to commercial lending. Their membership, while selective, represents about 80 per cent of all banking resources and the Ohio Valley Chapter covers the southern twothirds of Indiana and Ohio, as well as all of Kentucky. BROWNIE TROOP IN FIRST MEETING Perry Brownie Troop held it’s first meeting of the fall season at Perry Center school, north of Ligonier, on September 23. Mrs. Kenneth Simmons is serving as their leader with Mrs. Thomas Reed, as assistant leader. presiding. The new contest has begun and members are qualified as long as they lose weight. As soon as they gain or are absent more than once they are out of the contest. It will last until there is only one member left. The prize will be the money collected from fines for those gaining weight. Meetings are held every Tuesday evening and are open to all those wishing to lose weight. Birthday Celebrated Mrs. Edgar Clark was guest of honor with her family helping her celebrate her birthday last Tuesday evening. Guests were Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Clark and family of Etna Green and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Fox and sons of Tippecanoe. MARGI SHULTZ HEADS U. M. YOUTH FELLOWSHIP Miss Margi Shultz was elected president of the United Methodist Youth Fellowship during their retreat at Oakwood Park, Sunday. Serving with her will be: Jane Alber — vice president Brenda Brown — secretary Peg Tinkey — treasurer Sue Tinkey — publicity chairman. Activities at the retreat included planning of next year’s projects, the business meeting and social events consisting of swimming, softball and volley ban. SORORITY OPENS FALL SEASON Kappa Sigma Tau Sorority opened the fall season with new officers presiding in the home of Mrs. Richard Frain, Thursday evening. Plans were made for the coming season. On Sunday afternoon members enjoyed a tea at the home of Mrs. James Schrock. Mrs. Sara Robinson and Mrs. Violet Good of Huntington were visitors of Mrs. Jessie Goshorn Friday afternoon. Mrs. Blanche Green, Mrs. Dorothy Bobeck, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Click and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Growcock recently took homemade ice cream and cake to the home of Mrs. Lucille Dukes to help her celebrate her birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Griffith had as their guest Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Griffith, of Sturgis, Mich. were in Chicago, Sunday, visiting Dan Schlotterback who is at the Veterans Research hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Otto Schrock were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Schrock Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Cory and son. Randy, have returned from a two-week’s vacation in Scottsdale, Ariz., where they visited Mrs. Cory’s sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Conner and daughters. TERRY ROOKSTOOL REINSTATED IN CIVIL DEFENSE At the regular meeting of the Syracuse unit of Civil Defense, Thursday night, a former member, Terry Rookstool, was reinstated as an active member. He had resigned when he went into the service. Two applications for new members were approved. Assistant chairman James Ritter presided and heard the reports. City director Charles Vanderveer read a letter on the time and schedule for the portraits. The pictures will be taken today (Wednesday) at 6 to 8 p.m. in the CD building. Mrs. Thomas Gilbert, secretary, will be the receptionist. Those having coupons will be notified of the time and place. Mrs. Gilbert reported hearing from the West Noble school. They asked members to take care of the parking when the West Noble school has their basketball games in the Syracuse school. There will be seven games. The members agreed to do the parking and Mrs. Gilbert was instructed to write the school. It was announced that there will be a football game at Wawasee high school on September 26 and all members are urged to be at the school by 6 p.m. as the traffic will be heavy. Ransom Sawyers To Be Honored At Open House For 50th Anniversary

William Burgett Promoted At United Telephone Company L. J. Boohr, vice president of operations of United Telephone Company of Indiana, Inc., recently announced several personnel appointments within the company’s newly-created northern division, including that of William Burgett of Milford. William Burgett was named plant supervisor in the Warsaw district. He began his employment with United as a lineman in Warsaw in 1946. He became a combination repairman in 1948 and held this position in United’s exchages before becoming testboard and frameman in Warsaw in 1966. Burgett is a graduate of Kenova, W. Va., high school and is married to the former Dorothy McCoy. They have two children, Mrs. Dennis (Paula) Wuthrich and William, 18, a senior at Wawasee high school, and one granddaughter. He is a member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge, and Order of the Eastern Star.
