Wawasee Bows To Plymouth

By Tom Speicher The Mail-Journal Sports Editor After a devastating second quarter, the Warriors completely outplayed the Rockies from Plymouth on the Rockies home field Friday. However, after spotting the Rockies a 19-0 halftime edge, the Warriors had begun too late. Before a large excited crowd, the two teams battled evenly the first quarter. The only threat of the first quarter was when the Warriors trudged upfield and were stopped on the Plymouth twenty yard-line. Instead of punting, hugh junior tackle Rex Huntziger elected to attempt a field goal. The kick was blocked by Plymouth, thus ending the first quarter excitement. The second quarter proved to be the Warriors’ downfall. With 8:33 showing on the clock, Plymouth put six points on the score board on a 17 yard pass play from Kevin Weidner to Mark Fruits. The point after kick' was successful. Due to the combination of elation and mental lapse by the Warriors, Plymouth soon scored again. The Wawasee defenders had halted the Rockies’ drive on the nine yard line where Plymouth elected to try a field goal. The Warriors’ defense was fired up and senior linebacker Kent Wilson charged through to bat down the kick. Failing to remember that ball was live, the Warriors elatedly pranced' off the field while Plymouth ran the ball in untouched, making the score 13-0. The point after attempt failed. One minute later, the Plymouth offense once again took advantage of a shaken Warrior defense. With 36 seconds remaining in the half, Plymouth excited a tricky “Flea Flicker” pass pattern which resulted in a 52 yard touch down catch by Harley Houghten. The point after attempt again failed. As the long second quarter and the half ended, the score was 19-0 in favor of the Rockies. Trailing 19-0, one might expect both the Warrior team and the fans to give up. Such was certainly not the case. The Warriors and the student body began the second half as if they were undefeated. The second half opened with Wawasee taking the kickoff and with 210 pound junior fullback Roger Korenstra coming to life, the Warriors marched to the Plymouth 20 before being stopped. The defense was vicious and" eight plays later the Warriors regained the ball on the 42 yard line. Gaining confidence,

Frosh At Wawasee Bury Manchester Gridders 46-6

Fullback Kim Cripe scored three touchdowns in leading the Wawasee freshman football team to a 46-6 romp over Manchester here Wednesday. Cripe finished the game with 135 net yards rushing in 12 carries, one of three Wawasee backs to peak the 100-yard mark. Halfback Dwight Dean wound up with 131 yards on 14 carries while running mate Steve Stout finished with 108 yards in 10 carries. Cripe got the Warriors of coach Dale Brannock on the board in the first quarter when he raced around end from 35 yards but. The extra point failed, leaving the Warriors with a momentary 6-0 lead. Later in the period,' however, Wawasee was on the move again, scoring when back Tim Moser went of tackle for a fouryard TD. Dean ran the conversion to give the Warriors a 14-0 margin. .

Milford Has 2-1 Record On Gridiron This Season As Season Brightens

Potential is the key play of the Milford Trojans this year. T£e record may well show these “gridironers” in the red by two, but “records were made to be broken.” The season’s opener against North Webster was close as Milford led in the first half 6-0, thanks to Roger Cannon’s 50 yard end sweep. The second half proved fatal, however, to the home team, and the final score was Milford 6 — North Webster 14. Although comparatively “outsized”, particularly in height, a determined Trojan defense gave West Noble only I'2 points in Milford’s second home encounter. the rest of the Warrior offense suddenly caught fire. With quarterback Don May alternating plays among Russ Mikel, Gary Newcomer, and Korenstra, the Warriors drove in to score with six seconds remaining in the third quarter. The Warrior score came on a beautiful 29 yard run by Russ Mikei. The Warrior attempt for the second point after touchdown try failed.' The third quarter ended with the score 19-6. During the fourth quarter the Warriors continued to run through Plymouth defense and to freeze their offense. Wawasee gained many yards in this quarter, but the game ended with Wawasee one yard from another score and Plymouth a 19-6 victor. x ln the second half Wawasee gained 164 yards while Plymouth gained only 66. Rushing leaders for the Warriors were Roger Korenstra, who played an excellent game while bulling his way for 63 yards, 56 of these came in the second half. Gary Newcomer was seo-

Cripe came on strong in the second quarter, scoring on runs of 20 and 15 yards. Stout ran both extra points to make the score 30-0 at halftime. Halfback Steve Johnson made it 36-0 in the third quarter on a four-yard run before Manchester scored its lone touchdown on the return of an interception 30 yards. The Warriors got their final TD on a two-yard drive play by Stout with Dean running the PAT. Defensive end Chris Longnecker, for the second week in a row, tackled a ball carrier in the end zone for a safety, making the final score 46-6. Wawasee netted over 400 net yards rushing in gaining its second win against one loss. The Warriors are at Plymouth next Thursday for a 5 p.m. game. On defensive for the Warriors, linebacker Jay Jones and defensive tackles Eric Kolberg and Allen Eppert sparkled.

verse weather conditions. Sparked by a 35 yard run by Roger Cannon, quarterback Mike Wollman handed off to halfback Doug Hoerr who swept easily in to the end zone for six. Fullback Roger Cannon smashed over the two extra points and Milford was on the road to victory. Rome City came back in the second quarter with a TD, but were unable to unlock the Trojans’ defensive door for the extra points. The second half was a battle for the defense. Thanks to the aggressiveness of fellows like Roger Emmons, Bruce Korenstra, Mike Vanlaninghgun and Doug Hoerr, Rome Citywas not able to score in the second half. Final score: Milford 8 - Rome City 6. The Milford Trojans will play Syracuse under the lights at the Wawasee high school stadium Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m.

ond with 54 yards and Russ Mikel was third with 38 yards and the Warrior touch down. ' On defense, linebacker David Baumgartner finally came into his own aUd led a fine Warrior defense with 10 solo tackles and four assists. Following closely was Kent Wilson with nine solo tackles and three assists. Big linemen Rex Huntziger and Lester Hammel were also close with seven solo, three assists; seven solo tackles respectively. Next Friday the Wawasee Warriors will play at home against Goshen to try and better their 1-2 record in a game starting at 7:30 p.m. It is hoped that the fans will provide a fine turnout, for the players have now kicked out the “jams” and are ready to win once again. ST. JOHN, KANS., NEWS: “Members of the Congress have been in turmoil .... over the matter of extending the surtax. Closing tax loopholes, seeking out new sources of taxes, and trying to decide which taxes can be increased with the least ensuing squealing seems to occupy most of the time of many members of the federal governing body. Odd, isn’t it, that nobody in Washington seems to be concerned with ‘making do’ With the available tax revenues, with setting an absolute limit of taxes, on reducing taxes, and, for goodness sake, trying to ease the awful burden which the unhappy taxpayer bears today?”
