REMEMBER... WHEN IT HAPPENED IN SYRACUSE ONE YEAR AGO . Wawasee high school football team romped to an easy win over LaVille high school 24-0 for the first home game of the season. A new scnooi opened its doors in Syracuse Tuesday, Sept. 3. It is called the Syracuse Christian Day School and is located in the annex of Grace Bible church on south Main street in Syracuse. Arthur W. Keefer, 67, r 1 Syracuse, died last Thursday in the Goshen hospital. He is survived by his wife. Mrs. Helen Overstreet was released from the Goshen hospital Friday following eye surgery last week. The Syracuse volunteer firemen and their families held their annual picnic Sunday in the scout cabin park. FIVE YEARS AGO Syracuse Rotarians and their special guest, the Rotary sponsored Little League baseball team, were thrilled to hear an inspiring talk by Joe Hernsen of the Chicago White Sox at a meeting held at Howard’s. Roy (Doc) Miller resigned from .she Syracuse police department Tuesday afternoon. The resignation is to be effective Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Jay Peffley and daughters spent a week recently on. a trip to the Smoky Mountains. Mrs. Elizabeth Kehr was admitted to the Goshen hospital on September 11. James W. Spencer, a former Syracuse resident, died at Chicago September 10.' Survivors are his father, one sister, one brother, two half-brothers, one halfsister, and one step-sister. TEN YEARS AGO Members of the Syracuse fire department and their families will have their annual picnic Sunday in Crosson park. William I. (Dick) Geiger died suddenly’ in the Goshen hospital. Surviving are the widow, four sons, five daughters, 31 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one sister and one brother. Richard Crews left recently for Lackland AFB, Texas, where he will begin basic training. Mrs. Dean Coverstone was admitted to the Goshen hospital on Friday and was dismissed Saturday. A- R. Schmerda of Sallville, Va., is visiting his sister-in-law, Mrs. Georgia Miller. The subject of the sermon is “Matter.” Another passage in the lesson from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy reads: “Mortals are inclined to fear and to obey what they consider a material body more than they do a spiritual God,” page 214. Henwood farm south of Syracuse is continuing and operators say they are now at a depth of over 6,000 feet. Mr. and Mrs. John Bowser left Wednesday for a week’s fishing trip in Canada. The drive for funds to construct a cabin for boy and girl scouts has reached a total of $3000. Mrs. Robert Haunes submitted to major surgery on Monday. Mrs. Henry Carlson of Detroit is here caring for her daughter-in-law Mrs. Max Catlson who is confined to her bed by illness. FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO Relatives and friends of the Allen Ruples, 42 in number, went to the Ruple home Sunday and helped Mr. Ruple celebrate his 80tl birthday. The two-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bushong got the third finger of his left hand caught between the door last Monday and had some stitches taken. John S. Neff passed away on September 21 in his home near the west limits of town. A son was born on Sunday to Mr. and Mrs. Knox Stetler and was named William Wesley. Mrs. Mary Hamman of Ohio is spending some time with Mr. and Mrs. Burton Howe.
