JHfc JIU A .jgajr fl 4 * TOUCHDOWN FOR WAWASEE — Wawasee high school full-back Roger Korenstra is shown above as he goes over the one yard line to score the Warriors first touchdown in the second half of Friday’s game. Wawasee won the game 28-13.

Warriors Score On Third Play

By Tom Speicher The spirited Wawases Warriors set the pace for the opening game of the seasomjfcith a touchdown on the third play from scrimmage and raced on to a 28-13 victory over the Northfield Norsemen Friday night before .the home crowd. This victory disproves preseason reports stating the Warriors might be in for a long season. Quarterback Donn May strategically tore apart a big Northfield defense with a fine aerial and ground attack. In the opening minutes an electrifing 61 yard pass play from May to senior end John Leemon produced the first Warrior touchdown. Electing to go for the new two point after-attempt, the Warriors were successful in sending half-back Russ Mikel around right end. Nearly eight minutes later the Norsemen came to life and scored their first touchdown on a quick pass to their right end. The point - after attempt fail-

ed. The Warriors fought back and soon extended their point total to 14 on a one yard drive play up the middle by rugged junior full-back Roger Korenstra. The Warriors again succeded in getting their two points on the afterattempt on a pass from May to Mikel. This brought the first quarter score to 16-6. Standstill The two teams battled to a scoring standstill during the second quarter. The second half scoring attack began soon after the kick off as Roger Korenstra once again plunged in from one yard out. The point-after kick attempt by big junior tackle Rex Hunziker, new and very welcomed to the Warrior line-up, failed. The third quarter ended with no further scoring as the rain began. The fourth quarter action began with a long run by Gary Newcomer who was tackled on the one yard line. Two plays later Newcomer ran the over tackles for the Warriors fourth and last score, thus the Warriors’ pre-game request for a three touchdown victory by their principal and chief Mr. Smith was possible. However, the Norsemen refused to give up and battled back for their second TD on another pass play. The point after

kick was successful making the final score 28-13. The most encouraging part of the game was the excellent passing display put on by junior quarterback Donn May. He completed seven of 11 passes thrown for a total of 137 yards. Gary Newcomer was the Warriors’ leading ground gainer with 123 yards. Russ Mikel and Roger Korenstra followed up with 24 and 21 yards respectively. The Warriors mauling defense was led by senior linebacker Kent Wilson who had 13 solo tackles and one assist. Tom Miller and Dave Baumgartner followed with 10 and eight tackles respectively. The Warriors traveled to Fort Wayne Friday to take on a very tough Central Catholic team at 8 p.m. It is hoped that the public will support the talented Warriors throughout the remainder of the season. Friday’s game is set to be played at Zollner Stadium in Fort Wayne. The stadium is located off the bypass, just east of the coliseum. OSBORNS PLACE AT STATE FAIR Rickie W. Osborn of r 2 Pierceton won sixth place with a four year old and over cow in the dairy show at the state fair.
