Along Main Street By GEORGIA BUSTER School this week and then by the first of next week things will be back to normal with colleges starting. Even if it stays warm, the summer has ended for the kids. It has been a rather tragic one for Syracuse, but may be only because the deaths by accident were young people that most of us knew. Have heard some good reports on the quick action of the Syracuse fire department and emergency unit. And in very dry weather, the Pickwick Theatre and Jaycees headquarters, in the old Youth Center were flooded Thursday night when the sewer lines in the alley backed up. The town’s workers went out at 9 p.m., but only two could be located and not enough to dig up the alley. It was all fixed by 10 a m. Friday. Hear one of local boys, who is a county deputy sheriff, has been gathering eggs instead of chasing yeggs lately. I do believe Syracuse has the only store left around here that still uses a bell on the door to ring when a customer opens the door. The Star Store still uses such a bell. Far from being out of date in merchandise the Star Store has very up-to-date items. Mrs. M. D. Ruple of here thinks she may be the only person who had a relative attending the Nix-on-Astro dinner. Her nephew, James Nennott of Twin Oaks, Calif., was an invited guest to the dinner, as a telephone company representative. If you have been to the license branch or library you must have noticed the flowers in Mike Larranaga’s yard. I hear Hilda (Mrs. Larranaga) has a real green thumb that the flowers she plants just bloom and bloom. Must be so judging from the ones in front. Mrs. Melville Smith, who lives on the corner of Pearl street and Dolan drive, has just had her house painted and really shows up some of us neighbors, so I hope to paint the trim on my house before the snow flies. I have siding so that lets me out of the big job. Jay Peffley of NIPSCo is back on the job. He took off just after his daughter, Cheryl’s wedding. We were sure he had gone along on the wedding trip, but Jay says he was just resting up from the work and excitement of the wedding. This is the time to think about those boys still in or going to Viet Nam. Several organizations will be sending packages, so if you have some one in Viet Nam A or know of some one, get the address to the Wawasee area Jayshees.

The Red Cross is again sending ditty bags. These bags hold several items that the boys need and use, but do not come with regular service equipment. I heard that one item needed is a small can opener. We are again sending scuffs to the Veterans* hospital in Fort Wayne, along with books and magazines. Then on New Year’s Day the books and magazines go to the state prison at Michigan City. We also send heavy winter clothing to the Cheyenne Indians in Montana and small items to the Togus Veterans’ hospital in Maine, so when you are cleaning house don’t throw away any of these things. Get in touch with me, I can tell you where to leave them. With the holidays and tourist season over until November, the traffic may not be quite so heavy but with schools open, one must watch for the children,, especially the small ones just starting this year. ? Be a good sport—be a good driver —drive carefully! Indianapolis Stockyards Open September 15 BOURBON—The Etna GreenBourbon Branch of the Indianapolis Stockyards, a full service livestock marketing center for northern Indiana, will begin operation Monday, Sept. 15, according to Harry Gamage, president of the Indianapolis Stockyards Corporation. Gamage also announced that William O. Byrum of Onondaga, Mich., will manage the new Etna Green-Bourbon Branch. Byrum, his wife and nine month old son will soon take up residence in the Etna Green-Bour-bon area. According to Gamage, the new branch of the Indianapolis Stockyards will offer livestock growers and feeders of northern Indiana an “at home” full service market that will fulfill the marketing needs of the area. Gamage said, “We will offer graded pool selling of hogs, auction selling cattle, the purchase of feeder pigs and stocker and feeder cattle on order, and a full commodities trading service. Byrum, a graduate of Michigan State university in Animal Husbandry before being appointed manager of the new Etna Green-Bourbon operation, was employed by the Michigan Farm Bureau as a livestock specialist. In commenting on his new duties, Byrum said, “I believe that the graded pool system of selling hogs, which means that all hogs shipped to the market will be sold under competitive conditions, will bring a new concept in hog marketing and hog prices to the area.” Byrum has opened his office at the “big green barn” on U. S. 30 between Etna Green and Bourbon, and invites livestock growers and feeders of the area to stop by for a chat to learn more about the services the new market will offer livestock men of the area. Miss Edith Baumgartner was a luncheon guest of Mrs. John Hoerr of r 1 Milford Sunday.
