14 YEARS AGO, AUG. 18, 1955 Kenneth Ryman left today by train for Phoenix, Ariz., where he will spend a vacation of two weeks with Mr. and Mrs. L. Z. Lambert, former Milford residents. Miss Edith Baumgartner, linotype operator at The Milford Mail, is spending two weeks in Cissna Park, 111., the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Urban Bauer. S/Sgt. and Mrs. Charles Waltz, Grand Rapids, Mich., are the parents of an eight pound, 10 ounce son named Charles Raymond, born August 8. Mrs. Waltz was formerly Mary Louise Bare, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Bare, former Milford residents, and is the niece of Mrs. Lester Cretcher. Mr. and Mrs. Merle Campbell were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Campbell Sunday at South Bend, and in the afternoon drove to Silver Beach, St. Joseph, Mich. Mrs. Ed Lambert and daughter, Janice, left Monday on a ten day trip to Colorado Springs and Salida, Colo. Mrs. Lambert’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. McMath, live at Salida. Mr. and Mrs. Eldridge Bailey and sons, Bobbie and Ronnie, returned home Friday night from a two-weeks visit with Mr. Bailey’s parents in Mississippi, and her parents in Oklahoma. They were also in Texas. 29 YEARS AGO, AUG. 16, 1945 Mr. and Mrs. Charles Price received a telegram on Monday from Washington, D. C., with the following information: The Secretary of War desires me to express his deep regret that your son, S/Sgt. Robert L. Price, was slightly wounded on Luzon, July 24, 1945. Continue to address mail to him as formerly or until new address is received from him. -Acting Adjt. General of the Army, Edward F. Witsell. Dr. Vern Stockberger and Mrs Katherine Harris were united in marriage Thursday afternoon, August 9, at 3 o’clock, at Dr. Stockberger’s residence. Mr. and Mrs. Warren L. Shively of Nappanee announce the engagement of their daughter, Pegge, to Pfc. Ned Bott, son of Mrs. George Bott, Ashland, Ohio. No date has been set for the wedding. Miss Shively will return to Ashland college this fall for her second year, and private Bott will return to duty following a 30 day furlough. Pfc. Raymond Custer is on a 10 day furlough. He met with a painful accident on June 16. He had his left arm broken and his right arm and legs badly cut. He was in the hospital for 6 weeks but is getting along well now. Pfc. North Central Dental Society at Culver Military Academy Wednesday afternoon and evening. The afternoon program consisted of golf, skeet shooting, and tour of the academy. Joseph Judkins, musical director in the Milford high school, left on a trip to his home in Madison, Ind., from whence he will make a hurried tour of the east, stopping at Washington, D. C., and Norfolk, Va., among other eastern cities. Mr. and Mrs. Sam Beer of Syracuse and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Beer of Milford spent several days in Michigan last week. Mrs. L. B. Rassi and daughter, Louann, left Wednesday afternoon for Gridley, Kan., where they will spend some time visiting with Mrs. Rassi’s mother, Mrs. Lizzie Schick. Dawn Ann, little two year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Beer, miraculously escaped serious injury when she fell from an upstairs window Wednesday evening of last week in her home in the northeast part of town. Miss Florence Coy, school teacher in the Goshen public schools, is-* spending this week with her sister, Mrs. Dale Sparklin, of Goshen. Mr. and Mrs. Irvin L. Coy and two daughters, June and Florence, were Sunday visitors at the Brookfield zoo in Chicago.

While in Chicago they spent some time in the Loop and at Grant Park. 40 YEARS AGO, AUG. 15, 1929 Mrs. Henry Waldbeser, son Ben, and daughters, Misses Louise and Rosie, motored to Danville, 111., Saturday and visited the former’s daughter, Miss Carrie Waldbeser, who is a patient at a Danville hospital, having undergone a serious operation. • Mr. and Mrs. Russel Philips and daughter spent Sunday in Milford with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Merrick. Daniel Homan, 61, who for 29 years was an employe of the Elcar Motor Co., and its predecessor, died at 8 o’clock Thursday night at his home in Elkhart. Miss June Coy accompanied her sister Melba home last week from a visit with friends in Goshen the week previous. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dubbs and daughters left Friday morning for their home in Bristow, Okla., after spending a week here with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. George Snyder of Fort Wayne were calling on friends and relatives in this vicinity last week. George, who operated Hotel Milford a number of years ago, is employed by a Fort Wayne newspaper company at present. Miss Betty Baumgartner, Miss Margaret Kholi, and Miss Florence Coy of Tippecanoe Country Club and David Clem of New Paris enjoyed a plane ride Tuesday evening at the Goshen airport. Mrs. Gertrude Coppock of Huntington and her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Searer of Phoenix, Ariz., visited Mrs. Estella Swartz, Syracuse, on Friday. The Searers had been called to Minnesota by the death of their grandson by drowning last week.

HEX HOMEMAKERS ELECT OFFICERS AT PICNIC New officers were elected by the Hex Extension Homemakers club August 6 when it held its annual picnic at the Lake Wawasee cottage of Mrs. Mary Brown. Mrs. Eugene Brown was co-hostess. New officers are as follows: President — Mrs. Milton Shuder Vice president — Mrs. Merle Darr Secretary — Mrs. Richard Plikard Assistant — Mrs. William Cable Treasurer — Mrs. John Emmert, Jr. Mrs. William Cable presided at the afternoon meeting when the song of the month, “Jeannie With the Light Brown Hair”, was sung in unison. Mrs. Hattie Brown gave the devotions. She read Proverbs 18: 24 and “Secret of Happiness”. Roll call was answered by nine members by naming a vacation place they most enjoyed. Following the meeting a birthday cake was served to celebrate the 85th birthday anniversary of Mrs. Hattie Brown. The next meeting will be in the Hex Grange hall on September 2 at 1:30 p.m.

Annual Dinner-Dance Set At Tippy Friday The Lake Tippecanoe Protective Association will hold its annual dinner - dance Friday, Aug. 15, at the Tippecanoe Country club. The buffet dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. and dancing to the music of The Three Guys will be from 9 to 12. Mrs. Arthur L. Cunningham and Mrs. Joseph B. Tynan are co-chairmen. They are assisted by Mrs. John L. Newcombe and Mrs. Wyatt Weaver. The directors and their assistants from 30 lake landings are in the process of selling tickets to the 300 mem- 1 bers and their guests who are expected to attend the evening’s festivities.
