This year’s queen was Donnette Chambers, beautiful blond daughter of Robert Chambers, of 1017 East Market street, Warsaw, seated in the above photo. First runner-up was equally attractive Debbie Flinn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Flinn of Pierceton, shown on the left above. On the right is Marcia Miller, “Miss Warsaw lll,’’ who was second runner-up. On her right is Pat (Mrs. John Evans) Bisig of North Webster, 1968 fair queen. Selections are made on the basis of a penny-a-vote in a contest sponsored by the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and all proceeds go to the hearing and speech clinic in the county.
New Salem By MRS. RAY FERVERDA SPECIAL MUSIC The special music on Sunday was presented by a young men’s Jay Plank, Gary Hurd, Dave Beer and Ron Wildman. Tom, Jr., was accompanist. A number of visitors attended the services. —NS—NORTHERN INDIANA CONFERENCE HELD The Northern Indiana district conference of the Church of the Brethren was held at Camp Mack August 8-10. On Friday evening chairman and worship leader John A. McCormick of North Liberty was in charge with the moderator’s message brought by Rev. William Kidwell of Nappanee and the - director of music being W. David Albright of Fort Wayne. There were two numbers by the conference choir. Saturday was the day for business sessions with 178 delegates attending from 50 churches. The youth banquet was held at 5:30 and the evening Session was presented by the youth. There was a drama by Goshen college players, “No Snakes In This Grass”, and a “talk back” by a panel of youth — Sharon Snyder, Linda Kesler, Lynn Frederick and Keith Kline, chaired by Thomas Wilson of Chicago. Sunday guests speakers for afternoon sessions were Dr John F. Knight, field secretary of the Indiana Baptist church and Rev. Thomas Wilson of Chicago. On Saturday evening the youth group held a memorial service for Alan Wenger of near Lakeville. He was accidently killed on Friday and was to have been chairman of the youth program given on Saturday evening. Alan •was a member of the CBYF cabinet of Northern Indiana. A memorial fund was started. -NSBIRTHDAY PARTY HELD SUNDAY Wayne Kauffman, guest of Doug Shively in the Max Shively home, was he st to a surprise birthday party for Doug on Saturday evening. Movies were shown during the evening by Dennis Dausman. Refreshments of birthday cake pizza, sandwiches and pop were served. Those present were Susie Baker, Sandra and Nancy Crowl. Dennis Dausman. Gary Hurd. Stan Kilmer. Rick Rapp. Ron Wildman and Jack Teeple. COMMUNITY NEWS Wayne Kauffman of Levittonn, N. Y.. is a guest of Doug Shively in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Max Shively of r r Leesburg. The boys have corresponded since they were in the fourth grade.
Mrs. Ruth DeFries of r 1 returned home on Saturday evening after spending eight days in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Donald DeFries and son Doug at St. Joseph, Mich. Mrs. Nellie Anglin of Leesburg spent last week in the home of her sister, Mrs. Inez Shively, on r r Leesburg. Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Wildman of r r Leesburg attended the Balsbaugh reunion on Sunday in North Manchester. New Salem To Have Spiritual Life Conference The New Salem Church of the Brethren will be holding a spiritual life conference at 7:30 p.m. each day from August 17 to 24. The speaker for these meetings will be Rev. Harold Martin, a pastor, writer and Bible scholar from York, Pa. Rev. Martin is the author of several articles and booklets and writes regularly for the Brethren Revival Fellowship Witness.

On Sunday evening he will talk on “The Majesty of God”, with other sermons being “The Magnificence of Jesus”, “The Mission of the Holy Spirit”, “The Malice of Devils”, “The Ministry of Angels”, “Nonconformity to the World”, “Christian Guidelines for Youth”, “The Bible and the Christian Home”, and “The Coming Russian —Israeli Conflict”. As a special feature each evening, Rev. Stephen Kiplinger, a talented chalk artist from Syracuse, will create beautiful scenes related to the evening’s theme and special music will be furnished. Everyone is invited to these meetings. Nursery facilities will be provided for those with youngsters. Fairfield Superintendent Gives Opening Dates
The opening schedule .for the Fairfield Community schools was announced today by superintendent Marvin Ward. The schedule is as follows: The first day of school will be Tuesday, Sept. 2. The students will be dismissed starting at 11:15 on this day. Lunch will not be served on days that school is dismissed at noon. September 3 and 4 will be full days of school and on Friday, Sept. 5, the students will again be dismissed at 11:15 a.m. The first day for kindergarten will be Monday, Sept. 8. All bus routes will be the same 'this year. Students will be picked up about 15 minutes later, in the morning and will be returned home at about the same time as last year. All parents with children who have not enrolled in school are asked to make arrangements to enroll them as soon as possible. Fairfield high school, Millersburg elementary and New Paris elementary will be open starting August 18 for enrolling students. ~ Book lists and other information may be received by contacting the building principals. 1Registration Set At Cardinal Learning Center Registration for the Cardinal Learning Center, a facility operated by the Council for the Retarded of Kosciusko County, Inc., will be on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 2 and 3. Parents of mentally retarded children who reside within the county should call the council office at Warsaw for an interview appointment before the above dates. If it is impossible to bring your child on one of these days, please call the office and make arrangements to register your child during the last week of August. Classes will begin on Monday, Sept. 8. Bridal Shower For Miss Knisley Mrs. Roger A. Baumgartner of Milford was hostess at a bridal shower for her niece, Miss Charlene Knisley of Syracuse, brideelect of Roger Galloway of Syracuse, Monday evening, Aug. 4. The gift table was done in yellow and white. Miss Knisley was assisted by her cousin, Tammy Kneller of Columbia City, in opening her gifts from the 16 guests present. The hostess served cake, coffee and punch to the guests, among whom were Mrs. Glen Knisley and Mrs. Gallowny of Syracuse, mothers of the principals. The marriage of the couple will occur Sunday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. in the Calvary United Methodist church at Syracuse. Rev. Kennard E. Robinson will read the rite.

Tony showed his Appaloosa pony, War Dance in five classes winning three blue and two red ribbons. He was reserve top rider of the show. Mr. and Mrs. Workman’s daughter, Rita, showed her filly, Midnight Lady, in showmanship halter winning a blue ribbon.
MILFORD CITIZEN TAKEN TO NURSING HOME Mrs. Charles R. Brittsan of Milford was taken by ambulance to the Roselawn nursing home at Spencerville, Ohio, Tuesday noon. Spencerville, her home town, is where several sisters and a brother reside. Mrs. Brittsan’s son-in-law, N. R. Kirkdorffer of Ogden Dunes, her grandson, Charles B. Kirkdorffer, and son Brian of Seattle, Wash., accompanied her. Cotton linters are used in making X-ray film.

MILFORD RESIDENTS AT BIG BEAR LAKE Mrs. Lulu Felkner and Chester Felkner of r 2 Milford and Jim Felkner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Felkner of Milford, left Friday morning for Big Bear Lake, Mich. Jim will spend two weeks at the lake with his grandmother and uncle and then return on August 24. Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Fox of r 1 Milford had as their supper guests Tuesday, Rev. and Mrs. Edgar Petry of New’Paris and Mrs. Manis Miller and daughter Shelly of Chapman lake. Mrs. Irene Hollar of Milford called in the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Auer, Sr., on r 1 Milford, Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Beer of r 2 Milford flew to Phoenix, Ariz., last Friday to visit their son and daughter-in-law; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Beer. They enjoyed a trip to the Grand Canyon before returning home on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Beer are teachers in Phoenix schools.
