REMEMBER... WHEN IT HAPPENED IN SYRACUSE ONE YEAR AGO Syracuse police chief Daniel Ganger turned over his badge to the new chief Orville VanderReyden. Ganger resigned after four years as chief. Paul Penn, Jr., in Lightning 10134 kept a strong hold on his number one season position in Wawasee Yacht club sailing races Sunday with 1-3 finishes. Earl G. Burkholder, 27, r 1 Syracuse, suffered 25 fractures in an auto accident early Thursday morning. He is in the Goshen hospital. Delbert Ott, 49, of West Unity, Ohio, a Syracuse native, died at 3 p.m. Sunday at West Unity. Survivors are three sons, two grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters. Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Crow, r 3 Syracuse, are the parents of a daughter, Stephanie Laine, born Wednesday in the Goshen hospital. FIVE YEARS AGO O. P. (Barney) Davis, 64, died in his home Friday of cancer. Surviving are his wife, two daughters, five grandchildren and one sister. Mr. and Mrs. Sheridan F. Betes of r 4 will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary August 22. They were married in 1914 at Cassopolis, Mich. A head-on crash south of Syracuse Friday night took the lives of two men. Artie D. Milton and his father-in-law, Joseph Wassweman, 65. Both died instantly. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Plummer who have managed the National 5 and 10 cent Store here for 14 years have accepted positions with the State Bank of Syracuse. Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Anderson are leaving Thursday for six weeks in Europe. They plan to spend most of the time in England and Spain. TEN YEARS AGO Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rock, Jr., won a blue ribbon for their 1929 Model A Ford in the Model A Restorers club national meet at Dearborn, Mich., recently. Mr. and Mrs. Joel G. Bates will be at home at Ithaca, N. Y., after September 1. The marriage of the former Dolores M. Chelko and Joel Bates was solmenized Saturday in Natrona St. Mathias Roman Catholic church in Pennsylvania. Mrs. George (Blanche) Hire, 88, died Wednesday in a Goshen nursing home. Surviving are her husband and one niece. Mrs. Lola Snyder, r 2, was dismissed from the Goshen hospital recently. Mr. and Mrs. William Shell of North Manchester called at the Artie Montel home Sunday afternoon. TWENTY YEARS AGO On Friday, Aug. 26, the Ayres and Kathryn Davies Wild Animal circus is coming to town, sponsored by the Syracuse - Wawasee Rotary club. George Wise of Baton Rouge, La., was a guest in the home of his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Smith, from Friday until Wednesday. Mrs. R. E. buster of Nashville is a guest of her aunt, Mrs. Estella Swartz. Mrs. Ada Zeltinger and her guest, Mrs. Maizie Zeltinger of Winter Haven, Fla., are spending the week in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Zeltinger at Chicago. Mrs. Chloe Ritter, 85, died Tuesday at Elkhart. Surviving is a daughter.
