■ > ? Telephone A Port Os Our Everyday Life
I ; IN TODAY’S column we pay [ tribute to a priceless blessing we i enjoy that seldom gets a second I thought—the marvelous American ' telephone system. Our admiration enjoys the i Bell Telephone system and the j Independent system as well. ; Hugh A. Barnhart of Rochester • in his varied interests is a past i national president of the Inde- [ pendents, in which he has hold- [ ings. How could we get a newspaper out without a telephone, enjoy safety, conduct business, or converse with neighbors since there are no longer backyard fences? We have talked to loved, ones in uniform in Hawaii, Korea and Viet Nam, the latter via satellite, the voice being as clear as in a call locally. Cost ■was S3O for 3 minutes to Korea and G.I. stand in line five hours or more in Viet Nam for a 5 minute talk to the States. In 1967 900,000 telephone calls went out of the financial district of New York City and now it is 1.5 million. In Indianapolis telephone calls have jumped 26.5 million a day five year ago to 32 million a day. A. T. & T. parent of the Bell system plans to spend $5.2 billion on improvements this year alone. In newspaper work or armed forces in foreign countries we have undergone the torture of using telephones in Central Europe and far Pacific countries. We acknowledge indebtedness to Newsweek Magazine for some of the incidents related here. s tone and one hour for busy signal or wrong party. In a rage he hurled the telephone to the floor of the precinct headquarters, overturned desks, filing cabinets and chair, and shat-* tered a window. He got a sympathetic write-up in the Herald newspaper. In Brazil residents have ■waited as long as a decade .for a telephone installation. In Bangkok a four or five year period to get a phone installed is not unusual. Now would be customers can get one in 12 months by putting up a $750 deposit. In France there are 400,003 persons on the waiting list for a telephone. A 72 year old retired teacher despaired of living to get her phone after five years of waiting. An Avignon, France report, was an hour and a half at wait at times to get a dial -tone. Bad telephone service was an issue when George Pompidou successfully ran against Alain Poher for French president. A survey showed one-fifth of all long distance callg* placed in Great Britain -^rernisdirected. A call from Kenya to Central Africa Republic is routed via Paris and London. The Soviet Union hasn’t published a new telephone directory since 1962. Many Russians do not bother to answer a jangling phone. Edgar Hoover, FBI chieftain. He sends us the FBI Bulletin regularly. We quote his view of Patriotism, that to us is not a dirty word. “Good citizenship can best be described as a debt to the past and an obligation to the future. It is a solemn contract Between the individual and his government. The strength of our nation lies in the hearts, minds, and souls of all of us.” Hoover listed seven steps toward Patriotism: 1) Be alert and learn the true nature and tactics of the communist and criminal enemy. 2) Make civic programs for social improvements of our business. 3) Exercise our right to vote; elect representatives of integrity* 4) Respect human dignity — individual rights cannot co-exist with crime and communism. 5) Be informed—know the history, tradition, and heritage of our country. 6) Combat public apathy—indifference can ba fatal when nation survival is at stake. Attack bigotry and prejudice wherever they appear; justice for all is the bulwark of democracy. TOO LATE TO CLASSIFY ANTIQUE and RUMMAGE SALE Thursday and Friday.
