- If any of our readers are hippies with long, stringy hair and are in search of marijuana which appears to grow in such abundance in Jefferson, Scott and Prairie townships, we’d advise that you stay clear of this area if you value your locks. It seems an unofficial sheriff’s posse has sprung up in this area

that doesn’t “cotton” to marijuana seekers, in particular those with long hair. This posse is slightly different than those seen on the old western movies, operating in autos and trucks with two-way radios. It should be noted they operate with the full knowledge and quiet acquiesence of Kosciusko county sheriff Dave Andrews. On Saturday, July 19, they noted an auto occupied by two boys and a girl, all of whom wore long hair. They stopped the car, observed that they had marijuana, but that they had gotten rid of it before being stopped. They were from Bloomington. When sheriff Andrews arrived, he had no charge against
the youthful trio, so he left. They pleaded they didn’t want to be left alone with the “vigilantes.” After the sheriff left, youths were given a choice of being taken into Warsaw where they would be held for questioning, or that they could cut their hair in the presence of the posse members. A knife and rusty clippers were produced and the “haircut” began. It ended up in a botched job that would disgrace any self-re-specting barber shop. On Synday night posse cornered two Detroit youths in their early 20’s, driving the country roads slowly. When they were stopped, it was also apparent they had marijuana in their possession. They, too, were given the choice of cutting their own hair or being turned over to the sheriff’s office for questioning. The group has been haunted for nearly two years with youths, many of them frorh out of state, driving the country roads looking for the wild-growing marijuana. They hit upon the idea of making the offenders cut their own hair as a penalty for their freedom. Now, this doesn’t mean much to a clean-cut youth, but to a hippie this is a blow to his main badge of identification. We would wager there will be many more young men with butchered leeks before the word finally gets back to the dens of Chicago, Detroit and elsewhere. ❖ $ $ Dick Puschman and Brooks ■Kirchoff of the Syracuse area left Wednesday in Brooks’ airplane for Canada for a quickie vacation at a lodge the, latter has there. * $ $ If you have a complaint With the overworked United Telephone Company’s Syracuse office, and hear the pleasant, reassuring office on the other end of the line, it belongs to Betty Smith of Milford, a new employee at the company’s Syracuse branch. $ o * Four members of the department of school house planning of the Indiana department of public instruction visited the Lakeland school corporation last Wednesday and Thursday, July 23 and 24, to review the present buildings and project building needs for the next five years.
They will submit a report of their findings to the Lakeland school board in the near future. According to superintendent Don Arnold, this is part of a threepronged effort to assess present plant facilities. The other two prongs include a Lakeland administration survey and one by the building architects. The corporation is now enjoying a three per cent per year growth—amounting to an additional 100 students per year. This being true, one can expect additional building plans before the next five-year period rolls around. * * * Many have asked how we got the picture of Neil Armstrong touching down on the moon, which appeared on page 1 of The M-J last week. The picture was taken from a TV screen by Wilbur Smith, amateur photographer who is also a NIPSCo employee in Syracuse. Here is Wilbur’s advice for anyone who wants to photograph a TV picture: 1. Turn off brightness and contrast (black screen, no picture), 2. Turn up brightness until you can see recognizable picture, 3. Turn up contrast until black “retrace” lines are as black and wide as possible, 4. Adjust brightness to your taste, then, 5. Photograph the picture, using a 1/30 second speed with an f-stop of 3.5. ♦ * « Robert Busch of r 3 Syracuse (Dewart Lake) is the new r 1 carrier out of the North Webster post office, replacing Duane Leedy, who was temporary carrier, replacing Richard Baker, who resigned recently. Busch was an employee in the Warsaw post office, and has aspiration of being North Webster’s new postmaster. Postmaster Everett Smith retired recently and that post has been held on a temporary basis by Mrs. C. J. (Imogene) Menzie, Jr. # * » Has jogging come to Lake Wawasee? Each morning, from about 7 to 10 o’clock, a man and woman are seen jogging or otherwise taking a morning constitutional along Waco Drive. Maybe this is the beginning of a local jogging club. TRAVEL TIPS For a wrinkle-free, carefree vacation trip, pack cool knits and durable press clothes, suggests Purdue university extension clothing and textiles specialists. An hour’s stop at a loundromat occasionally will be all you’ll need in order to stay band-box fresh on even the most swelling summer day. When you’re finishing lastminute packing for a vacation trip, don’t put clothes directly from the dryer into the suitcase, caution Purdue university extension clothing and textiles specialists. Pack only completely dry clothes because warm damp clothes cause all clothes in the suitcase to wrinkle badly. When you’re deciding what to pack for your summer vacation trip, remember to choose clothes which are comfortable while you’re traveling. A tight, too short skirt which requires constant pulling and tugging is not a good choice. Attractive culotte skirts for gals are a good choice. Keep suitcase lugging at a minimum on this summer’s vacation trip by packins just a few basic dresses anF lots of accessories. Scarves, pins and belts take up little room in luggage and make it easier to dress clothes “up or down.”

Canoe trips of anywhere from a few miles to over 300 miles can begin in northeastern Indiana. Canoeing Is Fun . . .
What can you do for something different? Why not try a canoe trip! It’s different, exciting and offers beautiful scenery not readily found by the person who does all his traveling in a car Many canoeists love to find secluded rivers and streams where the outboards have not penetrated. There one does not find the speed and hurry-scurry of today’s world but instead the peace and quiet of yester - year that is an experience in itself. Canoe owners do not talk about their two and four-barrel-carburetors or the advantages of inboards versus outboards or where the nearest gas station can be found. They talk instead of the weights and qualities of

NEW YORK — This is what you’ve been waiting for: your vacation! Now at last you can get away from work and begin to enjoy much - deserved leisure time. But hazards threaten even the best-planned holidays. And you may need another vacation immediately after you’ve had one, unless you take steps to protect your family and yourself. Here are five ways to prevent a trip from becoming a trap 1. One of the worst spoilers is car trouble. It can be expensive, time - consuming and dangerous. Have your car checked thoroughly before you leave home. Some points often overlooked are: BRAKES — Are they too “soft”? Do they pull to the left or right? STEERING WHEEL — Is there too much play? WHEELS — Are they in balance? Are the tires in good condition? WLNDSHIELD WIPERS - Will they suddenly give you trouble on a rain - swept parkway? RADIATOR — A mixture of water and a good rust inhibitor is the best coolant in hot weather. FAN BELT — It’s a good idea to carry a spare. Carry sweets for a pep-up snack between meals, but don’t
various canoes and advantages of loading supplies in one position or another plus the natural beauties of the various streams. A big advantage of canoeing over conventional boating is file fact it doesn’t cost as much to own a canoe. An outlay of around $350 will equip a family of three or four with canoe and camping gear for a trip down any stream. There are several canoe clubs in the state and many organizations plan at least one “float” each year. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has prepared the accompanying map of the most popular canoe trails in the state and packets are available of the most popular canoing waterways at a small cost.
try to guzzle even a soft drink behind the wheel. 2. You won’t enjoy your vacation if you’re worried about whether you turned off the gas. Take a few minutes to make a list of items to be turned off and services to be stopped before you go. Place valuables in a safe deposit box while you’re gone. Let the police know you are leaving for a while and give a key to a friend or relative (but be sure to tell the police that he has a key). One thing which will tip off an experienced burglar that “nobedy’s home” is a neglected lawn. If you plan

to be gone for more than a week, make arrangements to have your lawn cut. Then you’ll be ready to enjoy carefree holiday fun and relaxation. 3. Be prepared for and never underestimate the dangers of poison ivy. Nobody can be sure of being immune to its effects, which include stinging and itching blisters, and can mean disaster for vacationers. It is a dark, green, shiny, three-leafed plant which usually doesn’t grow more than a foot high. The milky and oily poison it exudes is far more formidable than the name suggests. A good way to soothe the effects of poiosn ivy is to use a preparation that provides cooling relief. Orfe such anti-hista-minic drug, which also combats insect bites and mild sunburn, gives quick relief when applied to skin surfaces. Called Rhulihist, it also acts as a local anesthetic to alleviate itching and, burning sensations. 4. Motel - hopping in search of rooms is a real holiday dampener. Be sure to reserve rooms

ahead of time — especially when you’re traveling during the busy season. Most places reserve space by telephone, but will hold a room only until 5 or 6 p.m. unless you specify “late arrival.” When you call, explain what kind of accommodations .you want, how much you want to pay, and when you plan to arrive. If your plans change, make another call. 5. And be kind to your budget. Few things can ruin a trip as mqch as a shortage of cash. A picnic by the side of the road will cut your food costs. And in many states, picnic areas come equipped with outdoor grills. Cafeterias are less expensive than most restaurants and no tipping is required. A plug-in coffee maker with its own cups is a great convenience. If you pick up some fruit or canned juice and some rolls or doughnuts the night before, you can breakfast in your room. Take these five vacation precautions and your systems will be “go.”
