The Crows Settle On The Eastern Shore
The Crows — Nathaniel and William — settled on the eastern shore of Wawasee. Nathaniel who owned what is now called the “Crow’s Nest” settled here in 1853 or 1854. William arrived at/Wawasee in 1858 on what is now called Cedar Point. It wasn’t long after his arrival at the lake that Nathaniel became proprietor of 400 or 500 acres of land on which a house was built. Years later a nicer home was built on the present site of the “Crow’s Nest/which 'is where the Cromwell roadturns from the lake. The move to the new house wasn’t an easy one, however, for while Mrs. Crow and her daughter wanted to move into the newer, better home Nathaniel refused. Then one day, the story goes, Nathaniel went to town and his wife took matters in her own hands. When he returned all the family’s belongings were in the new house. Thus the move was made. One of the coolest, broadest, sandiest and best beaches on the lake is the Natticrow Beach. One doesn’t have to search long after reading about Nathaniel Crow to find where the name of the beach came from. It is a metamorphose of Natti and Crow. Along the beach one finds many fine cottages and homes. Here too is the new cabana club which opened last year. About 1860, farmers in the area began to drive their sheep to Natticrow Beach to wash the fleece before clipping. Later the area became the scene of many corn roasts with the participants arriving by water in varied crafts. Here too, in the early 1900’s the move to the lake was felt and cottages began to dot the shore-

line. Nathaniel Crow was a very successful farmer. Included in his property were 80 acres which were acquired at a cost of $1.75 per acre. In 1888 he modernized ’the flour mill at Syracuse and put his son, Benjamin, in charge. The mill burned in 1890. William Crow > Three years after William Crow came to Lake Wawasee he and Janette Rarick were married and they purchased the land in the present Cedar Point "area: Among children, according to the Wawasee Days” by Eli LilTjh' were Dow, the eldest and Jasper (Jap) who was well known as fisher and oarsman around the club houses and Inns. Many said that Jap could have knocked out Gentleman Jim Corbett. Like many of the early settlers the William Crows eventually sold their lake-front property for the use of cottages. Yacht-Cabana Club With the formal opening of the Crow’s Nest Yacht Cabana club last summer a new type of summertime fun came into vogue on romantic Wawasee. Jim Tranter, Sr., was the first commodore and is the onp to whom credit is given for putting the new package together. The organization has a long lease on the “Crow’s Nest.” We know Mrs. Crow would approve of the beautiful building with its paneled walls and carpeting, but we can only wonder about the comment old Nathaniel would have after his reluctance to move into the house in the first place. The big boat pier at the club’s lakefront area will accommo-

After the city folk started to come to the area, yvhere settlers considered fishing part of their way of living and not a sport, the fish hatchery was built and for many years the lake was stocked from the hatchery. <• BEc Kratt MLR »a,TIT 1 JU * . . . - ’ ■ : ?■ ■ '■ ...... x.. _ . ~ r.;? Give a Dinner Party without Dinner Give a dinner party without any dinner, for a change — have an hors d’oeuvres menu and let everyone assemble their own kabobs and grill their own snacks, right outside on the patio. An hors d’oeuvres patio party fits right into the new informal mode. Prepare the “fixings” ahead of time, then count on the gas grill to provide steady cooking heat until even the heartiest eater says “enough.” A menu can be simple or as fancy as one’s taste. Some tips:
Put large, whole, fresh mushroom caps on skewers and grill about 12 minutes, turning once or twice. They can be dipped in a creamy onion dressing or eaten plain. Brush giant shrimp with melted garlic butter arid grill, turning occasionally. A rotisserie attachment will do a superb job of grilling skewers of cocktail sausages, chicken livers wrapped in bacon, or chunks of cooked ham and pineapple.
