Lions Hod Plan 24 Years Ago To Open Fishing Season

Members of the North Webster Lions club had a plan some 24 years ago . . . that of opening the fishing season with a festival. The idea grew and grew and today the Mermaid Festival, now underway in that Lakeland town, is a nationally - known event that attracts crowds of up to 100,000 persons. As one views the gigantic parade that will move out Saturday at 4 p.m. with State Treasurer John Snyder as marshal it is hard to believe that the first parade was composed of bicycles and was lead by the high school band. That parade featured three beauty contestants and the town’s youngsters

Group Cruising Adds Variety

Group cruising is ideal family fun. It widens boating horizons beyond fishing, water skiing or aimless day cruising. Families can enter into a variety of social activities using boating as a springboard. Examples of group boating fun are: a moonlight rendezvous, a cookout, a visit to another state, following a historic trail, taking in a local fair, having a songfest or impromptu dance. For your trips, pick protected waters such as inland waterways, rivers and quiet lakes. As a start, groups of five or six boats are practical for good trip coordination. Runs of 40-60 miles per day are enough distance to cover. Don’t be over ambitious to cover water when planning an itinerary. This can pose a strain on all the participants. A group leader should be appointed for each trip. It is his responsibility to establish a cruise plan. The planning should include an estimate of time needed to complete each leg of the trip and an itemized list of food, clothing and special equipment required. An alternate plan should also be made to provide for a bad weather emergency. boating groups like ) to include an advance car as • part of the trip plan. The j car is driven to a check point ahead and can be useful in getting any special gear needed or for help to an indisposed boatman. ': Not all trips have to be scheduled over a weekend or longer. Half-day excursions ending as simple cookouts or songfests at a scenic site can be most rewarding. Whether you plan a day’s activity or an extended trip, you’ll find group cruising a unique way for the entire
