Big news at the Frog Tavern today is a double wedding of owner Ray Dean Yoder to head daytime waitress Lou Ann Flauding, and bartender Danny O’Haver to nighttime waitress Norma Wagner. Nobody could say for sure just where and at what hour the nuptials would take place—or at least no one was talking—but Wednesday, June 11, was the appointed day. $ $ ❖ One of the most interesting people we’ve talked to for some time

is Anthony Sehmerda of Hollywood, Fla. Mr. Sehmerda is an uncle to Dick Miller of Syracuse, and is spending this week with the Millers. His visit here is occasioned by the wedding of Michelle Miller to Harry W. Hart on Saturday. A retired engineer, Mr. Schmerda is also a world traveler. He admits to having visited 6(5 countries, and a European trip he will be taking this summer will take him to 10 more countries. He has been around the world three times, crossed the Atlantic ocean 17 times and has passed through the Panama Canal seven times. He came to Syracuse in 190(5 to work for the town’s main industry at the time—the Portland Cement Company. His story of that company, and how it took marl from nearby lakes, including Syracuse lake and Waubee lake, is certainly interesting. If you get a chance to talk to this well read gentleman yet this

week, don’t miss it. Lakeland school superintendent and Mrs. Don Arnold and daughter Vicki are scheduled to leave soon for a three-week motor trip through the western states. They have no planned itinery. but hope to “loaf through their vacation,” to quote Mr. Arnold. Last year, due to the press of getting the new Wawasee high school building completed,, superintendent Arnold decided to forego a vacation, and to add a week to his usual two weeks this year. Ex-banker-auditor Noble C. Blocker, whose loyalty to the colors of the GOP never wavers, would like to see The M-J carry a little less Brademas and a little more Adair, thus echoing a recent letter to the editor by townsman Carl Penn. Blocker says, “We live in a conservative community, and
I would like to see my favorite paper reflect this sentiment.” Himself a candidate for state senator in 1956, Blocker was an earnest supporter of Will E. Erwin of Etna Green against John Brademas last fall, states he might get another chance to support the former state Outstanding Young Farmer two years hence. Jim Connolly, manager-oper-ator of the South Shore golf course, is recovering from a severe acid burn about the face and arms which he sustained on Memorial Day. He was working in the water pump house located north of the main building when a coupling let loose, thoroughly spraying him with water and acid. He was taken to the Goshen hospital, and was a patient there until recently $ $ Have you entered a float in the Father's Day Flotilla yet? You still have time. Call Joe or Barbara Todd, phone 8562217. £ # John Plank has been busy as a beaver since he opened the Village Plumbing Company here. John’s a Leesburg (RR> resident and he and his family are loyal supporters of the New Salem Church of the Brethren. » ❖ * ❖ Since Seth Ward’s favorite cat Pokey died recently, his interest in the feline species has waned, and his usually large menage of cats has dwindled to the point where he only has one or two left. ❖ ❖ ❖ Who is the comely new waitress at the Syracuse Case? Dick and Jean Miller had in their back yard over the week end? It provided a splendid arrangement to entertain friends following daughter Michele’s wedding Saturday p.m. Polly and Stan Bonar, who operate the Wawasee Carry-Out and Standard Service station, were keenly disappointed at the manner in which the state treated the fish hatchery area over Memorial Day. They said not only did the American flag fail to appear, but the premises were unattended. The grass was not mowed and there were no trash receptacles, they said. They felt, at least on Memorial Day, the state department of natural resources, should have put its best foot forward in its lakefront facility. « $ $ The grand opening of the new American State Bank at L’gonier on Sunday was a huge success. The bank built a modern bank on its former site, at the corner cf Cavin and Third streets, thus replacing a landmark of 80 years. The only familiar item that was salvaged was the old town clock which has been moved several blocks south on Cavin ' street, near the Ligonier telephone company. Pat and Irene Marrama, who have been operating the Jacks or Better, a pizza parlor at the Dead End Club in Mishawaka, will open the Wawasee Case in uptown Syracuse late this week or next week. * * $ Our good friend Dr. E. L. Fosbrink runs a close second to the fabled Bat Masterson of old when it comes to a quick draw. While Messrs. Masterson was quick with the gun, our good doctor is quick at producing a pocketbook photo of his bright-eyed granddaughter, Diane Elizabeth West, 3’.2-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David (Susan) West of Zionsville, Ind. This writer was so favored, and we can only comment, “Who can blame the doctor?” Mrs. Cable Lane, Kale Island, Lake Wawasee returned Tuesday from Chicago where she had been visiting.
