Wawasee Defeats Falcons; Dropped By Goshen 7-4
Wawasee’s Warriors made a good show in the sectional tournament as they defeated Fairfield on Saturday morning by a 7-2 score to earn the right to play Goshen in the .final game of the sectional. Goshen, however, was too powerful for *the local boys and won the championship 7-4. Wawasee hit for six runs in the fourth inning of the first game of the morning on three walks, three Fairfield errors and three safeties. Johnny Coy opened the inning with a walk followed by a single by Mark Thomas and a walk for Andy Hartley to load the bases. When Bill Cutter was walked, Coy scored. Donn May singled to drive in an additional two runs while an error allowed Cutter to cross home: plate. May was batted in by Chuck Coburn while Bruce Cummings scored the final point of the inning on a fielder’s choice. The first run of the game came when the Fairfield pitcher walked Coburn with the bases loaded. Balks—M. Hollar. Umpires — Bill Magley, Fred Schutz, and Dick Freeman. Game Stopped Goshen and Wawasee met in the afternoon for the final match but were forced to stop play in the second inning as a thunderstorm arrived on the scene. At the time Wawasee had two outs in the inning and Goshen had scored two runs in the first inning. ’ Wawasee was up-set minded as they faced Goshen Monday night for the remainder of the game but the powerful Redskins proved too much for the young Warriors. Goshen goes to the Manchester regionals with six straight wins. In the third inning Cutter and May hit the ball to the third base line for singles while Cummings added a third single to load the bases and Steve Zurcher hit a two-run double for the Warriors. Goshen too scored in the third stanza as Tom Radkey reached base on an error and stole second. He was awarded third on a balk and Greig Weaver hit a long fly to left to allow Radkey to score. Wawasee came to life in the sixth inning but a change in Goshen pitchers stopped the rally. Goshen, too, rallied in the sixth to win the game 7-4.
