Electronics Afloat
In the immortal words of Jimmy Durante “It useta was.” It useta was that small craft boatmen equipped their boats with little more than anchors, mooring lines and flotation cushions. For extensive cruising or fishing they were greatly limited. The Evinrude News Service notes that today, small craft operators can choose from a wide variety of electronic accessories which aid safety and add to the enjoyment of boating. , Depth sounders give precise readings of the distance to- the bottom below a moving hull and also clue the whereabouts of fish. They are easily installed, modest in price and well worth the expense. Radio telephones, the life lines for communication in emergencies, make contact possible with shore stations, the Coast Guard and other boats. Some of them can

double in brass as loud hailers! Radio direction finders make navigators of boatmen » without need for classroom training. With finders you can plot a position, take bearings on radio beacons, as well as tune broadcasts and marine channels. Even if a pea soup fog sets in, you can get home. For skippers cruising remote waters, LORAN (Long Range Navigation) systems are ideal for fixing positions quickly and reliably. Engine performance checks are now possible with transistorized tachometers, giving dependable readings under any condition. The miniature world of transistors has helped the marine industry make a giant step in the direction of greater safety and pleasure afloat. Your boating will be more meaningful with these accessories.

Camera Adds Fun to Boating

These three scenes show various camera techniques in shooting moving boats. At I the photo shot at a 50th of a second a’ f 32. Ir the center, the camera follows second at f 32. Note in the left photo the boat ijs blurred, and in the center, th< the camera is held steady, but at a 400th of a second at f 16, the image is shai Photography is a natural extension boating fun. Good pictures aboard or ashore are the source of many hours of pleasure for years to come. Camera work aboard deserves considerations not present ashore. Camera protection is vital. Salt air will eventually corrode even the finest metal finishes. When not in use,
your camera should be kept in a good case. For greater protection, inflatable pouches can be used. These are waterproof. They float and they provide cushioning against the shock of dropping. Double benefits are had when filters are used. Black and white film of moderate speed renders better prints when a medium yellow filter is used. Skies darken more pleasingly while clouds whiten. Ultra-violet absorbing filters are helpful when shoot-
ing vast areas of ocean and sky with color film. Your seascapes will look truer. A filter also protects your lens. Lensi shades are a must for avoiding glare.) Cramped shots from the cockpit area are often difficult to shoot. Try a wide angle lens for this situation, and it will permit you to shoot subject matter you might need to forego with a normal lens. In shooting another boat
left, .the camera is held steady and the boat, shooting at a 50th of a le background is blurred. At right, »rp. passing parallel to your craft at high speed, pan your camera to follow the boat. The effect will impart action to the scene. The background will appear slightly blurred while the boat in the foreground will look sharp. More drama can be added to your fishing pictures by shooting from a low angle aiming slightly upward from just above the water line. Cameras that can be viewed waist high are best for this. If the sea is rough,, get a friend to hold onto your belt while you concentrate on the action. You’ll stay aboard! If your light meter offers both incident as well as direct light measurement, use incident for overall scenes. Glare from the water can distort your measurements with direct light reading. Critical to any good picture is a level horizon line. Check this point of composition just' before you trigger the shutter. -- Shoot more than one picture of any given subject. Film is cheap. Memories are dear.

Pastoral Appointments WEST LAFAYETTE - Pastoral appointment changes in the North Indiana Conference of the United Methodist church were announced here Wednesday, May 21, at the opening session of the organization’s annual meeting. Bishop Reuben H. Mueller, head of the Indiana area, sent new ministers to several of the conference’s largest congregations. The conference, drawing more than 1,000 ministerial and lay representatives from 682 congregations in the 38 northern-most - counties of the state. The complete list of area appointment changes follows: Travis Purdy, Elkhart Salem from Packerton-Pleasant Grove. Ralph P. Karstedt, Milford from Sweetzer Ralph Bowman, Claypool from Muncie-Normal City. Orlo Hibbs, Etna Circuit from West Point-Trinity. Lamoin Hand, Goblesville-Beech Grove from Larwill. Joe Bear, Larwill-Oak Grove from Butler Circuit. Robert Alexander, PackertonPleasant Grove from Etna-Troy. Milton Persons, Remington from Claypool Richard Sumner, Sweetzer from Milford. Wait Until Motor Cools Before Refueling You wouldn’t think of pouring gasoline or kerosene onto a lighted match or fuse, for simple chemistry tells you that exposure to such a heat source might cause volatile liquid to ignite so quickly it would explode. For the same reason, take care when filling the tank of your lawnmower, tractor or other fuelburning, motorized appliance. Fill the tank before you start a job, the Insurance Information Institute suggests. , If the tank needs a refill, wart until the motor is sufficiently cooled down before adding the fuel. An explosion could cause severe burns, not to mention the ruin of a good appliance. Wallace asserts that he will continue.

Litter barrels are placed in public places as containers for refuse, and they should be respected as much by boatmen as by those on land. It takes only a moment more to step ashore and place refuse in the barrel instead of throwing it and hoping it lands somewhere close.
Watch that Stern Unlike an automobile, the back end of a boat responds first to a turn of the steering wheel. Keep this in mind when pulling away from the pier.
NOTICE Change In Ownership I have sold my business, the corporation, good will and the machinery to Jerry Ganshorn and Sue Ganshorn. The business will be operated under the same name and all printing jobs now in the shop will be carried out in the same manner as before. Mr. Ganshorn has been a teacher in the Ligonier school (West Noble) for the past seven years, in the vocational department. He has been an instructor in printing — both offset and letterpress — and is fully qualified to take over the business and produce first class work. ' In January of this year I had installed a new press an ATF Chief — in the office here, but due to health had never been able to get it going. It has just twice the capac ity of any press I had before and is one of the most modern presses manufactured now. Jerry will have it in production soon. So this office is in better shape to serve you now than ever before. Color? Yes! Factory and brochures of all kinds, and quality of the best. I have found it impossible to continue in the business, but do expect to help a little. I want to thank all those firms who have been so kind to me personally. I tried to give good service, and quality, and at a fair price. I think you will like Jerry Ganshorn, and that he will give you better service than ever before. Thank You, Bart Cox SYRACUSE QUALITY PRINTERS INCORPORATED 120 S. Huntington St Syracuse, Indiana

Many boats and piers bear scars because the driver forgot that the stern swings in response to a turn. Either push the boat away from the pier before accelerating, or leave the pier at a’slight angle until clear.
