Sailboat Fleet Runs to Fiberglass Hulls, Aluminum Spars and Booms
One thing is obvious even to the most casual observer — fiberglass has swept the board as far as the 1969 sailboat fleet is concerned. Almost every sailboat being built, baring small aluminum and inflatable canvas ones, is fiberglass. And if fiberglass is queen of the windjammer hulls, then aluminum is surely king of the spars. With few exceptions, masts, booms and spinnaker poles on this year's yachts are of aluminum — anodized, painted and plain. The sailboat designs? Every conceivable kind. There are keel boats and centerboarders, planing hulls and displacement ones, cutters, skipjacks, sloops, catclass boats, one-of-a-kind, scows, boats and yawls. But even with the diversity, trends are apparent. Most cruising-racing types are built to rate favorably under CCA. MORC and other racing formulas. The designers are trying to please the cruising man with comforts while offering a yacht that will win races under the ratings. The majority of day-sailer types, particularly the centerboarders, are class boats, or one designs. These are to be fast, sporty, fun boats. Each one-design is made from the same cookie cutter as the other. The boats are identical down to small details. Competition between these boats is usually keen. Skill, not a favorable rating, counts. Pricing varies widely among sailboats and it is most difficult to compare one close or make with another. There are too many variables. The shopper must look mighty deep before try ing to make a direct price comparison. Most boats are priced less sails. But some quotations, particularly of small craft and sailboards, include the sails. Other quotes may cover an auxiliary engine installed. Some include launching or delivery. But the widest price swings center around the hardware, fittings and rigging. In the bigger boats, the ocean racing kind, complete fittings needed to outfit the yacht for top competition can mount to 75*% beyond of the base price, thus ao’ding substantially to the cost. One deep water racer is tagged at $26,000 base price, ready to go when sails are added. However, the extra equipment list, suggested for top ocean competition, totals $15,430. To racing hands, these are the facts of life. But to a newcomer, the facts can be startling.

statistic of the day regarding sailboat prices: the average keel sailboat costs $1.74 per pound. This compares to about $ 1.15 per pound for a modern American automobile. But the boat outlasts the car three to five times! Attractive Interior Sails good ones, cost roughly $1.25 per square foot. That’s for mains and jibs. Spinnakers cost much less on a footage basis. This year sailboats are more attractive inside than most of those of past years. Builders are sprucing up interiors with drapes, carpeting and decorator color schemes. The dinette cabin rangertent, long popular on powerboats. is gaining wide acceptance among sailboat manufacturers! Other practical trends for 1969 include: * Standing rigging and fittings are mainly stainless steel.

* The swing toward the spade rudder, started some five years ago, continues on the competition keel boats. * Bow and stern safety rails are offered on more boats, either standard or optional. * Roller reefing is offered, standard or optional, on most larger boats. * Winches seem to grow on sailboats like weeds in a lawn. The winch, in addition to being a multiplier of force, is now a sailor's status symbol. One 15-footer even boasts a large halyard winch. * Character boats, those with real individuality and a salty tang, are still around, and perhaps even multiplying. * Sailboards and other minicraft continue to proliferate, making the “wet-seat-set” happy. * Little cuddys appear on more small sailboats, making them snugger and dryer to windward. * Jibs get ever bigger. (Maybe they’ll do away with the mainsail altogether and go back to the lateen?) * There are more catamarans being built. . * There are more outboard brackets for auxiliary power. » Soak Clothes To Remove Stains Anyone who has tried to remove such troublesome summertime stains as chocolate ice cream from a youngster’s playsuit or grass stains from Dad’s slacks, knows what an exasperating job this is! Elkin Minter, Purdue university extension home management specialist, suggests soaking such stained clothes in enzyme detergents. Although traditional laundry
detergents loosen soil, they allow the soil to re-deposit over the entire garment. However, Miss Minter explains that the new enzyme detergents are designed to remove stains and loosen dirt by soaking. The enzyme holds the soil in suspension so the dirt
