Guest Editor Ed Migdalski Says . . . Lure of the Great Outdoors Involves The Whole Family
Interest in Outdoor Recreation has grown tremendously during the past several decades. Perhaps the most significant aspect of this growth is the manner in which it has moved beyond the vast number of rugged males who like to rough it, to involve all of the members of the family. «■ Now more and more mothers are becoming ardent anglers; look forward to getting away from urban life into the pristine glories of nature for some camping, for boating — and so do their daughters. The mounting pressures created by this constantly expanding interest have played their part in stimulating governments to provide the facilities necessary to accommodate the hunger off the populace. More scenic: lands are being dedicated to human enjoyment; conservation moves apace and steps are being taken — sometimes with great difficulty — to preserve the purity and the beauty of more rivers and more lakes. Schools Take It Up Dedication of more leisure time to enjoyment of the outdoors is being further accelerated by modern trends in education which seek to incorporate instruction and appreciation of these basic values into school curricula. The mounting interest has, in turn, created a mounting demand for new outdoor recreational equipment, to which industry is responding with products to provide almost any degree of comfort and efficiency required to satisfy the varying demand. Despite the growth in outdoor recreation education, the greater number of our schools still are not prepared to supply it. Therefore, education in outdoor recreation and the simple skills that make it so pleasurable remains for the most part the welcome task of par-

And very important to our readers, he is the father of a 10-year-old boy named Tom, who enjoys nothing more than a camping trip with his dad; and a daughter named Nancy. Daughter Nancy and her mother also have become ardent participants with him and Tom in Outdoor Recreation.
ents. Fortunately they do not require a vast store of knowledge or experience to introduce a child to the pleasures of the great outdoors. In fact, with very little effort, parents can become quite knowledgeable on the subject. There are books, pamphlets, guides, even instruction from experts available, and quite readily. Government offers much literature. Youth organizations, local sports clubs, and frequently many of the stores, offer instruction. Modern outdoor recreational equipment makes the task even easier for the parent. No longer is it necessary to be .an expert backwoodsman, knbt tier, mechanic, seaman or sailor to thoroughly and safely enjoy an outdoor holiday. Happier Fishermen My son Tom, age ten, has had no problem learning quickly to operate an out-board-motor-powered boat for use in going fishing, or even river cruising. Improved new spinning reels have quickly

of home, in any degree. Modern tents for on-the-ground camping have become in most instances as easy to erect as it is to open an umbrella. How to get where you’re going on your outdoors vacation is a matter of wide choice. Most will, of course, go by motor'. of it-as the place for the vegetable garden and maybe a patio, many families are now reacting to their backyards in terms of their own private slice of the. great outdoors, and equipping them accordingly. Our office of Outdoor Recreation and Education at Yale University has been able to guide parents to a wide variety of activity for their families ranging from huntsmanship to trips into the Canadian wilderness. One factor has become especially apparent to me out of my own experience. Any program that includes father and son in side by side participation is mast appealing. I take keen delight in sharing field trips with my son Tom. Whenever possible we include mother and sister Nancy. We fish, take bird walks, iden-

fy trees, and go camping. Tom and I .look forward to participation in the annual father and son program of the Anglers Club of New York. I have been greatly impressed by Hunting Seminars for father and son which Tom and I have attended. Helpful Organizations Organizations such as the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts provide excellent leadership and outdoor programs for children. Many Boys Clubs, YMCA’s, Community 0 Houses, City Recreation Departments and church groups are now programming outdoor activities on a regular basis. The values of outdoor recreation have been recognized as a means of drawing the family together, as a tonic for senior citizens, and as a contributor to health. It is an ac-

Lighten Traffic With Picnic Jug Tired of having the youngsters trooping in and out of the kitchen to the refrigerator for cold drinks? Cut down on the traffic and slake their thirst at the same time with a picnic jug filled with chilled fruit juice, lemonade or chocolate milk. Place the picnic jug in the backyard so the youngsters may help themselves. Even young children can pour their own refresher if your picnic jug has a faucet.
