Work Camp Program
Given At Bethel
Mr. and Mrs. Martin Turner
of Fort Wayne presented a very interesting program at the Bethel Church of the Brethren last Sunday evening. They have been counselors for Presbyterian youth work camps the past three summers. In the summer of 1966 the group of 22 high school youths and five sponsors went to Ganado, Ariz., by car caravan. They slep in sleeping bags in churches and had their meals in the churches also during the travel time. In Arizona they worked at a Navajo mission putting a roof on the gymnasium and digging trenches for the gas lines. Many Indian friends were made on this trip and a wonderful fellowship was developed among the group who made the trip. The work camp traveled to Clarksville, Ark;., in 1967, to the College of the Ozarks. They form ed and poured sidewalks and did much interior ' painting on this the Presbyterian church. Most attend this college because of financial and work aid given by the Presbyterian church. Most of the students are not able to attend the college without this at end the college without this help. Much spiritual growth was the highlight of this trip for the 27 persons who made the trip. In the summer of 1963 another camp was taken to Brockton, Montana, to work for a Sioux mission church. stay in Brockton except for the local storekeeper. The town has been taken over by renegade Sioux. The Indians were unfriendly and did much harassing and stealing from the group. The Turners noted that racial equality took on a new meaning for the work campers because of the situation they lived in for ten days. They preceded with the work on the mission that was scheduled for them but never managed to make friends with the Indians while , they were there. Others attending the program from Fort Wayne were Greg, the Turners’ 17-year-old son, Rick Papasian and Kathy Mann, who had all been on one or more of the work camps. The program was sponsored by the camp committee from Bethel 1, Mrs. Richard Smith and Mrs Dean Dowty. Campfire by the camp committee from songs were also part of the evening’s entertainment as was the fun the group had making their own donuts for refreshments after the meeting.
