Pierceton FFA Wins District Crop Judging Contest April 17

A total of 22 Pierceton Future Farmers of America entered the district judging contest at Valparaiso cn Thursday, April 17. The two crop teams placed first and second, the dairy team placed seventh with Rick Osborn as the district high scorer. The forestry team placed ninth and 12th and the poultry team placed 10th. There were 16 teams eligible in all contests. Both crop teams and Rick Osborn will enter the state contest at the state fair. Following are the crop judging teams, their scores and individual platings: Team One (1;694> first place — Scctt Langohr, 575, second in district; Blaine Farley, 567, third in district; Paul Carlin, 552, fourth; Mitch Ousley, 550, fifth. triet; Larry Manuel, 523, sixth; Denny Trump, 444, 11th. Other team scorers were Fairfield, 1,372; New Prairie 1,307 and 1,187. In dairy judging Rick Osborn was first in the district with 274 points. Other team members were Roger Thomas, 261, Joe Mowrey, 247, Dick Carwile, 247, and Rocky Stone, 242 for 755 points to gain seventh place. The poultry judging team consisted of Jim Ellison, 7;64; Dan Surfus, 679; Mike Swartz, 650 and Mike Heintzelman 609 for 2,033 points and 10th place. In forestry, team one consisted of Keith Carlin, 389 points; Tim Moser, 359: Greg Evans, 194 for a total of 748 points place honors. Team two consisted of Pat Stevens, 257 points; Roy Carlin, 182; and Randy Evans, 172 for 439 points and 12th place.

EBENEZER LADIES MEET THURSDAY The Ebenezer Ladies Aid met at the home of Mrs. Ruth Smith on r 1 Ligonier, Thursday, April 17, with 13 members responding to roll call. Mrs. Hascall Crothers, Mrs. Melburn Rapp and Mrs. Court Slabaugh were guests. Mrs. Roy Wilkinson, vice president, presided followed by devotions by Mrs. Smith. Elect Officers Mrs. Wilkinson was elected new president; Mrs, Calvin Beck, vice president; Mrs. Roy Miller, secretary and Mrs. Milo Snyder, treasurer. Mrs. Charles Ebert assisted the hostess in serving refreshments during the social hour. The May meeting ’will be at the Indian Village United Methodist church.

Trout Season Opens In Indiana

The trout season will open in Indiana streams on Saturday, April 26, it is pointed out by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Trout have been stocked in a number of suitable lakes in northern Indiana, where cooler temperatures permit trout. There is no closed trout season in those areas. However, a season is maintained in Hoosier streams. Sloroe of these streams are being stocked, with 63,000 Rainbow Trout and 13,000 Brown Trout to be released in Indiana public streams and lakes this year by the department. These fish were produced this last year at Curtis Creek Trout Rearing Station near Howe, in LaGrange county. All stocking fish are of legal size and most are larger. The Rainbows ranged in March from 8 to 11 inches and the Brown Trout from 7Ms to 11 inches. They have had a month of growth since measurement. All trout fishermen 16 years of age or older are required to have a trout stamp in possession and affixed to an Indiana fishing license. A listing of trout areas is available from the Division of Fish and Game, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, 607 State Office Building, Indianapolis. District Superintendent At St. Andrew's The Rev. Evan Bergwall will be at the St. Andrew's United Methodist church on May 1 at 7:30 p.m. for the, purpose of reviewing the past year, electing officers of the church for the next year and to review membership rolls of the church. Dr. Bergwall will also present a short report on the work at Grace hospital in Haiti which is being supported by the church. All members of the congregation are asked to be present. Dr. Bergwall, superintendent of the new Elkhart district, is former pastor to the Simpson church in Fort Wayne and also former president of Taylor university in Upland.

Wednesday Affernoon Club Hears Musicale Mrs. Alice Clark entertained members of the Wednesday Afternoon club in her home on April 16 with Mrs. Ruth Rapp and Mrs. Merton Meredith assisting. President Mrs. Ralph Thornburg conducted the business meeting with 20 members responding to roll call. In a cru- , sade for morality by. the Federated club women of the U. S., a statement of commitment to work against indecency on television, piovies and in magazines, was read and voted on with approval of the club. Present Spring Musicale . Program of the afternoon was a most delightful six part* musicale of both instrumental and vocal numbers capably presented by Mrs. Clark. The Mizpah benediction closed the meeting and refreshments were served during the social hour. Mrs. E. L. Fosbrink will entertain for the April 30 meeting with Mrs. Marley Evans and. Mrs. Louis Kuilema presenting the program. Each member is asked to wear an article of another year, for this meeting. CAR DAMAGED Syracuse firemen responded to a car fire at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday evening when a vehicle belonging to Steve Hoover caught fire. Damage was listed at SIOO.

FARM BUREAU SERVES BREAKFAST On Saturday morning, April 19, the County Farm Bureau served a breakfast for Warsaw business men. The fellowship of the Farm Bureau board and their guests, including the members of the Rotary and Kiwanis clubs, was enjoyed by many as they partook of the breakfast consisting of fruit juice, ham and eggs, toast and coffee. The food was prepared and served by the women leaders of the townships including Mrs. Guy Vanator and Mrs. J. D. Barrett of Clay township, Mrs. Sherman Bryant of Tippecanoe township, Mrs. Wilbur Pyle of Jackson township, Mrs. Glen Disher of Etna township, Mrs, Phillip Harden of Lake township, and Mrs. E. F. Rhoades of Washington township. MRS. COBURN ENTERTAINS TWILIGHTERS Mrs. Bill Coburn entertained forthe a April meeting of the ' Twilighters Bunco club Wednesday evening with 11 members and three guests. Miss Pam Coa burn, Mrs. Paul Stouder and Mrs. Norman Robie in attendance. High went to Mrs. Stouder; low, Mrs. Adrian Zollinger; travel, Mrs. Philip Strieby; and door prize, Mrs. Delbert Whitehead. Birthday gifts' went to Mrs. Charles Searfoss, Mrs. Eugene Henning and Mrs. Donald Niles with Mrs. Bill Eyer and Mrs. Tim Darr receiving anniversary gifts. A white elephant gift exchange was held. 4-Counfy Mental Health Clinic The eighth annual meeting of the four-county Mental Health Clinic was held Thursday, April 17, at the American Legion home in Columbia City. Dr. Martin W. Meyer, Executive Director of the Governor’s Commission on Mental Health and Retardation, was the speaker for this meeting. The Four County Mental Health Clinic was created for the purpose of providing the citizens of Huntington, Kosciusko, Marshall, Wawash and Whitley counties professional counseling in psychiatry and psychology, so as to assist the citizens of these counties to attain and maintain good mental health. Heaton, 309 Seventh St., Winona Lake, has been promoted to engineering supervisor in Northern Indiana Public Service Company’s Warsaw district, Stanley W. Evans, district manager, announced recently. In his new position, Heaton reports to O. W. Morrison, operating superintendent. A native of Winona Lake, Heaton graduated from Warsaw high school and furthered his education through evening classes at Purdue university.
