READY FOR FESTIVAL — These four first grade students from Syracuse are ready for the school’s annual music festival on Friday night. From left are Greg Carpenter, Mary Jane Cox, Michelle White and Steven Keim. All elementary students (grades one-five) will take part in presenting the program. This involves a total of 501 students. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. in the boys gym of the school.

College Night Next Wednesday At WHS

The first Wawasee high school college night will be held next Wednesday, March 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the high school according to an announcement made this week by Lewis S. Immel, director of pupil-personnel and guidance service of the Lakeland schools. The program will consist of a panel discussion concerning the value of a college education with representatives of industry, higher education and the local counselling staff. Sophomores, juniors and their parents from Wawasee high school and the Lakeland community are especially invited to attend this event as they make their plans for choosing a college or other training beyond high school. Others are also welcome. Colleges to be represented are: Wabash, Hanover, Anderson, International, Indiana Central, St. Mary’s, Goshen, Huntington, and Manchester. * Universities will be: Indiana. DePauw, Valparaiso, Indiana State, Purdue, Butler, Taylor, Ball State, Evansville and Vincennes and ■ the Indiana Institute of Technology. r Junior High Hi Lites WHAT’S HAPPENING . By Jean Mellinger Our science fair proved to be a real success and had some tremendous exhibits. Students in grades one thru eight were the participants in the exhibit. The judges, Mrs. Peebles, Mr. Hite, Mr. Roose, Mr. Auker, Mr. Rush and Mr. Preston did a very fine job of placing the winners. The science fair committee, who did all of the planning, was Mr. James Hite, Mr. Robert Roose and our principal Mr. G. Wendall Bryant. There was a total of more than 2CO projects in the exhibit and each had a good amount of work put into it. The sponsors of this event were the North Webster faculty and the parent-teacher organization. ’ —JHS—LINDA’S LINES By Linda Lundquist Again, another six week grading period has ended and report cards were issued to all students, Wednesday, although the honor roll has not yet been released. SANDRA GERENCSER Milford 6th Grader Wins First At Notre Dame Sandra Gerencser. a Milford sixth grader and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gerencser, won first place at the regional science fair held at Notre Dame on Saturday. Sandra also won first place honors in the Milford science fair on February 22. Her project was “Sucrose Crystallization.” Syracuse Local Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Johnson and children, Scott and Kristi, Syracuse, just returned from a vacation in Florida. They visited Mr. and Mrs. Dave Mattox (Linda Byrd> and children, at Cutler Ridge just south of Miami. North Webster at Wawasee. The purpose was to take SRA placement tests. We ate lunch at the high school, throwing the cooks into a frenzy, for we added a total of 235 hungry mouths to their number. It was fun, though, for us. Immediately following our meal, Mr. Smith talked to us about our upcoming years at the high school.

S| /■»< g**- .< I W RHONDA LAWSON Rhonda Lawson Wins Science Award Rhonda Lawson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Lawson, Syracuse, participated in the regional science fair at South Bend on Saturday, March 8. Miss Lawson, an eighth grade student at Syracuse junior high school, participated with over 500 young people throughout the northern Indiana area at the science fair. In the junior division, Rhonda won first place honors and received a set of World Book Encyclopedias for her achievement. She was also recognized by the Indiana Psychological Association for her scientific experiment. Miss Lawson earned the right to participate in the regional fair by competing in the Syracuse science fair held on February 21. Syracuse's Top Spellers Are Kathy Kell And Joe Hickman

AW 7 / * KATHY KELL Kathy Kell won the Syracuse spelling contest on Tuesday night as the top spellers of the school competed in the annual Parent Teacher Association bee. Kathy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Kell and is a seventh grade student at the school. Runner-up for the evening’s competition was Joe Hickman, a sixth grade student and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hickman. As the school champion, Kathy received a plaque and a $25 savings bond, and Joe received a plaque and $5 award. First second and third place winners in the fifth and sixth grades and in the seventh and Area Residents Win Distinguished Ratings At Purdue West Lafayette, Ind. — Distinguished student rating was won by 1,957 Purdue university students during the fall semester, representing almost seven per cent of the 28,783 undergraduates. The list released by Registrar Nelson M. Parkhurst included 356 students with straight-A records in their work toward bachelor’s or associate degrees. This number represented about .1.2 per cent of the undergraduates enrolled on Purdue’s five campuses. To qualify for* distinguished rating, a student must have a grade index of at least 5.5 points (B plus) out of a possible 6.0 (A) in at least 14 hours of academic credit and have no grade,, below C <4 points). Smith of Wawasee high school announced today that Miss Faye ‘Rheinheimer has been named a finalist in the National Honor Society Scholarship Program. Kathy Kell was first place winner in the seventh and eighth grade contest while Tom Bailey was second and Barbara Kehr was third. In all, 20 finalists participated in the contest. William E. Dorsey served as nronouncer while judges were Dr. Wendel Shank, Philip Fawley and Mrs. Max Ellen Smith. Syracuse Local Miss Cheryl Peffley, a student in Western Michigan university, Kalamazoo, spent several days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jay Peffley and sister, at Syracuse. Wawasee Students Place High In DECA Contest Saturday

Approximately 100 juniors and seniors from nine schools: Jimtown, Elkhart, Goshen, Wawasee and Jackson. Adams, LaSalle, Riley, and Washington of South Bend, participated in the Distributive Education clubs of America region H contests held at Jimtown high school Thursday, March 6. In its first year of offering a distributive education program, Wawasee high school came home with more trophies than any of the eight other schools. Two Warriors took first place trophies and ’will represent Wawasee at the State DECA contest on March 21 and 22. The two first place winners were Phil Baumgardt in window display in the senior division, and Jann Shoemaker in job interview in the junior division. Other Wawasee trophy winners were Daryl Thomas, second place in sales demonstration, junior division; Marcia Linn, second place in public speaking.
