Non-Certified Personnel Provide Valuable Services At School
A valuable part of any school program is the service provided to both students and faculty by the school secretaries and teacher aides who are non-certified personnel. Without their dedica-

ties. She shares receptionist duties, assists students with any problems that arise and operates the public address system. Other duties include typing of letters, bulletins, calendar schedules. etc., and grade card time finds her busy sorting approximately 5,000 grade cards before and after completion of each grading period. This is done by a keysort method for computerizing. Bookkeeping assistance is provided when needed. Betty Haines, Secretary Mrs. Robert (Betty) Haines has been employed as secretary to Henry L. Smith, principal of Wawasee high school, since August 1967. During the first year, before Mr. Smith had a school building, teachers, or student body, she assisted him in general office work pertinent to the planning for the new school. She handles correspondence from the principal’s office, releases bulletins to the faculty and, along with Mrs. Dellinger, receives visitors to the school. She keeps in readiness all school forms used in the processing of school business and school activitives, helps with keysorting grade cards and, in addition, does some typing for the school nurse, the guidance director and Mr. Ritchie, the audiovisual director. Janet Elam, Aide Mrs. Jack (Janet) Elam, the quiet study hall aide, assumes the duties of supervision of students. This allows time for charting permanent attendance records. averaging honor roll and assisting teachers with paperwork and grading. Carol Koble, Library Aide The library aide at Wawasee high school, is expected to be of service to the daily needs of the librarian and students. Mrs. Carroll (Carol) Koble spends a good

part of her day doing the clerical work of typing orders and catalog cards previously checked by the librarian, processing new books, records and tapes, setting up periodical and career files for the student use. If the librarian should be out of the library for any reason, the aide works with the students both in serving them and maintaining a studylike atmosphere. The work day is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. five days a week. Doris Wolferman, Secretary Mrs. Doris Wolferman is secretary to Mr. Kesler and extracurricular treasurer. At present there are 37 accounts. Approximately SI,OOO crosses her desk per day. All money taken in must be receipted to the proper accounts and in turn all checks ■written must be taken from the correct accounts. Mrs. Wolferman also has charge of the bookstore. This includes ordering supplies for the bookstore, sales in the bookstore and record keeping on textbook rental. Orders for teaching supplies for the entire school pass through this office. Doris came to Wawasee high school from the Milford high school, where she had been school secretary for five years. Esther Rider, Aide Mrs. Arden (Esther) Rider does secretarial work in the student commons area where she can assist students in regard to schedules, club activities, athletic events, teachers’ schedules, etc. She does secretarial work for Mr. Chance, coordinator of fine arts; also typing of tests, information sheets, correspondence, etc. for all teachers desiring this service. She handles the money and keeps records of student sales transactions, such as candy sales, athletic tickets, student pictures, the Christmas Carol banquet reservations.
