Lakeland Football Began In Fall Os ’66

Lakeland football started three years ago in the fall of 1966. Each of the schools, Milford, Syracuse and North Webster, had a program in 'which seventh and eighth grade boys participated. The first season each team played two games, just among the corporation schools. In the fall of 1967 the sport continued to develop with boys participating from the freshmen and sophomore levels and competition growing as the teams competed with area schools. Each team played six games. This past fall the big step was taken as the three schools came together and Wawasee high school had their first B-team football squad. The young Warriors played an eight game achedule which included two varsity teams, the rest being B-teams. The Warrior record was six and

two. There were about 80 boys who participated in the high school football program and approximately the same number on the junior high level during the 1968 season. The 1969 season will be the first year for complete varsity competition. The schedule is listed below. developed into a program which has a varsity, B-team, freshmen team and the junior high teams. There will be approximately 110 boys participating, on the high school level and around 80 boys on the junior high level. First Varsity Game At the start of the 1969 grid season the Wawasee Warriors will play their first complete varsity schedule. Wawasee’s schedule ’will be one of the toughest schedules in the area even though the school will not be in the Northern Lakes conference until 1970. Because of this Wawasee had to pick up teams such as Fort Wayne Central Catholic and Goshen in order to fill its schedule. The 1969 Warrior grid team will be young because of the great number of sophomores who played during the past season. There will be a lack of experience as compared to the com-

petition. It will be necessary to replace five starting seniors, four who started on the Warrior defensive team and one on the offensive team. As the young Warriors gain experience throughout the season the outlook for the future is favorable. Football, which is a team sport, provides fun, challenges and adventure. The objectives of a sport like football are: 1. To develop physical fitness, in the areas of strength, endurance, flexibility, agility and speed; 2. To increase skills and the accuracy with which they are per-

formed; 3. Socialize the young men participating by developing a desirable mode of conduct for the young men on the playing field, as a student in the classroom, and as a citizen in the community; 4. To create favorable attitudes and appreciations and increase knowledge. In football the young men not only learn the skills of the game but how to be a member of a team. This sport is played on the interscholastic level and is used to meet the needs of the young men who demonstrate unusual abilities and advanced skills.
