’B' Team Downs West Noble In Overtime The little Warriors • did it again! Another game in the new gym — another victory. It was evident from the opening tipoff that it was going to be close, with Wawasee taking a slight 10-9 first quarter lead. During the second quarter the score was tied five times the West Noble team grabbing a small 22-20 halftime edge. Numerous turnovers gave the Chargers a 39-29 lead at the third quarter mark, but the Warriors fought back with a press in the last stanza, resulting in steals by Cutter, Olson and Blue. Two quick deuces by Cutter gave the Warriors a 45-42 lead with 1:07 left. West Noble then countered with three markers from the charity line, knotting the score at 45-45, the score at the buzzer. In overtime action the Warrior five played cool basketball, getting good shots from Clint Olson and Jay Longenecker to make it 49-45. Lundi then sank a free throw to ice the game. The final score: 50-49. Wawasee’s coach Kurtz commented after the game: “Another overtime game like this in the new gym and I’ll have an ulcer.” Bill Cutter and Tim Blue led the Warrior scoring with 11 and 10 respectively. In the rebounding department it was Baumgartner with nine, Longenecker with eight and Lundi with seven. The little Warriors will play their next game at their new “overtime” gym Friday, when they host Nappanee. $2,500 Damage In Garage Fire The Syracuse fire department was called at 1:24 p.m. Saturday to the home of Royce Meyers on CR 1250 north and west of SR 13A where a garage was ablaze. Warriors Fall To Hot Shooting West Noble

By BEN FOWLER Mail-Journal Sports Editor The Wawasee Warriors were not as successful in their second contest in their new gym as they were in the first, as they ran up against a hot-shooting West Noble quintet Saturday night and came out on the short end of an 83-76 score. In a fast moving first half, Wawasee drew first blood and led 3-0 with 7:29 left in the first quarter. Seconds later, the Warriors temporarily lost their starting center and leading rebounder, Bill Pipp, who suffered a sprained ankle. From here on, it was all West Noble, who ran up a 25-27 lead at the first quarter mark behind the fine shooting of Gordy Yeager, Steve Anspaugh and Frank Franks. The Chargers continued to blister the nets in the second period, making their field goal percentage for the first half a phenomenal 70 per cent and .increasing their lead to 51-38. Steve Zurcher kept the Warrior attack moving in the first half, getting 10 in the second quarter alone. The story of the second half was that the Warriors just could not catch up. They matched West Noble in the third quarter 15-15, and outscored them 23-17 in the final stanza, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the 13 point halftime deficit. Though never out of the game, the closest that Wawasee could come was seven points and that was at the final buzzer. The fine balanced attack of the Chargers was led by Franks with 19 points. Right behind him were Yeager and Anspaugh with 18 and 17 respectively. Wawasee’s Steve Zurcher led all scoring with 30 points, including nine in a row at the charity line. Zurcher also pulled down 10 rebounds. The only other Warrior to reach double figures was Dave Elliot who got 11 markers and 15 rebounds to lead in that category. Gary Firestone also played a fine floor game, getting eight assists. Friday night the Warriors play the third game in their new gym, as they play host to Nappanee. Box scores follow: WEST NOBLE (83) - Gawthrop 255, Franks 594, Cole 142, Hunter 012, Bushong 454, Anspaugh 733, Yeager 824.
