North Webster Wins 4-Way Tournament
The North Webster Trojans under the guidance of coach Phil Dick won the Syracuse invitational eighth grade tournament Saturday by defeating the host Yellow Jackets 27 to 24. North Webster advanced to the tournament finals by defeating Central Noble 30 to 29. The Syracuse eighth graders earned the right to compete in the championship game by defeating Milford Saturday morning 34 to 27. The ’ championship game was clos? throughout and it was not until the final minute of play that the outcome was decided in the Trojan’s favor. Milford gained revenge from their opening loss by taking the consolation game over Central Noble 39 to 29. Lead Warriors To Victory Saturday
Steve Zurcher’s hot hand led the Wawasee Warriors to one victory and one narrow miss as the local boys won over Akron 85-74 on Saturday while losing to Mentone 68-66 Friday. Zurcher scored 37 points in Saturday’s game to top his old school record and hit for 28 in Friday’s match. Wawasee - Mentone In Friday’s loss to Mentone the Warriors led at the first two stops, then dropped one point behind at the end of the third stanza and lost the game by the twopoint margin. Don Acton and Dennis Myers of the Bulldogs teamed up to score 44 of the visiting Bulldogs 68 points. Acton hit for 23. Dave Elliott was the second’ Warrior in double figures as he hit for 14. Bob Bryant led the home team with 18 points. Elliott scored 15 during the evening to again be the second Warrior in double figures. Wawasee took a commanding lead in the first quarter which ended with a 26-10 score and extended it to 41-27 by half-time. They led 58-41 at the end of the third stanza. Zurcher gave his first string players a rest with two minutes to go in the game and Akron made a drive for the lead, however, time ran out before the Flyers could catch the visiting Warriors.

Totals, 23 field gpals, 28 free throws and 18 personal fouls. Wrestlers In New Gym Thursday The Wawasee wrestlers now 16 for the first year of competition will finally have their first home meet. The Warriors will wrestle on their new mat in the new gym Thursday evening at 7 p.m. against Wakarusa. They will be home Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. against Pierceton and Tuesday evening at 7 against Bremen. In order for fans to become acquainted with the sport of wrestling, there will be no admission charge for these home meets. Plan on watching the Warriors led by Roger Korenstra (6-3) and Jay DeSomer (6-3) finish out the season before the conference tourney on February 1 and the state sectional on February 8.
