Meet The Wawasee Seniors
JOHN CHARLES BUSCH John Charles Busch plans to attend United Electronics Laboratories following his graduation .from Wawasee. He is the son cif Mr. and Mrs. Robert Busch of r 3 Syracuse. John is a member of band, lettermans’ club and 4-H. He has attended the 4-H Round-up at Purdue. He will graduate with majors in shop, history and business and English and lists shop as his favorite subject. He has four brothers and two sisters. Chris is a sophomore at Purdue,' Aaron and Nathan are freshmen at Wawasee, Calvin is in the seventh grade at Syracuse, Becky is in the fourth grade and Roberta is a first grader. Track and cross country are : his favorite sports and working on cars is his hobby. —WHS—STEVEN HOWARD KISER Reading and writing are the hobbies of Steven Howard Kiser, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Kiser of r 3 Syracuse. He will have majors in English. math, science and social studies when he graduates. Drama and journalism are his favorites. He has been a member of the drama club and its productions for the past three years and was a member of the science club during his junior year. This year he also belongs to Bradley’s Braves, the boys’ cheerblock. F TA and Smoke Signal staff. Steven is a member of the North Webster Church of the Brethren and vice president of the CBYF. He won a drama award last year. After high school he plans to attend Manchester college. An older sister, Sandra, graduated from North Webster in ISS7 and is now working at G * W, William is younger and is a freshman at Wawasee; Mary Kathrine is in the sixth grade at North Webster and J. Lloyd is a fourth grade student. During the summer Steven works at Penquin Point. Swimming and basketball are his favorite sports and “Black Like Me” is his favorite book. —WHSWILLIAM J. PIPP William J. Pipp is the son of William J. and Eleanor B. Pipp of 806 Front street, Syracuse. He will graduate from Wawasee with majors in science, English, math and social studies and minors in business and foreign language. Government and physiology are his favorite subjects. bowling league and was in chorus his freshman and sophomore years. He also belonged to the youth board for two years and was a member of the long distance swimming class. Bill has various bowling trophies, letters in basketball, football, baseball and track and has a letter jacket and sweater. He also received a medal in track for being on the record breaking team in the underclass relays at Pierceton. After high school he plans to continue in athletics at Indiana university or Ball State and major in psychology or business. An only child, he works at Nicolai’s Machine Shop in the summer. “Huckleberry Finn” is this lad’s favorite book and working on his car is his hobby. His favorite sports during school are football and basketball and his favorite summer sport is water skiing. -WHS—KENNETH KARL MICHAEL Kenneth Karl Michael is debating at the present time as to whether he wants to go to college after he graduates from Wawasee high school or to join the armed services. Ken is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Michael of r 2 Syracuse. He will graduate with majors in English and social studies and minors in Spanish and business. Government is his favorite subject. Ken ran track for two years and played intramural basketball. He received the most total points trophy in track while in junior high. His oldest brother is Larry who resides at Lake Wawasee. Another brother, Tom, also resides at Wawasee. A younger sister, Rose Marie, is 16 and a sophomore at West Noble high school. Another sister, Louann is 13 and an eighth grader at Syracuse junior high school. Jon is nine and in the fourth grade at Syracuse. In the summer and fall Ken works at Galloway’s Grocers and in the fall he works on pier jobs. His favorite sports include basketball, water skiing, football, hockey and baseball. “An American Tragedy” is his favorite book and coin collecting is his hobby. —WHS—PAMELA KAY TROYER Another of the more active seniors ‘ at Wawasee is Pamela Kay Troyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Troyer of r 2 Syracuse. Pam is a member of the band and chorus and was vice president -of her freshman class and secretary of her sophomore class. She was also a freshman cheerleader. She has also served as vice president of the GAA, “dhsthe student council, the gymnastics? club and Tri-M. Pam is a member of the Wawasee Lake-
side Chapel Y-F. She has a shorthand pin and placed in the district gymnastics meet. At Wawasee she is majoring in English, social studies and physical education and minoring in Spanish, mathematics, science and business. Math and phys. ed are her favorites. She plans to major in physical education at college and teach phys. ed at the secondary level. Pam has three brothers and three sisters. She is the oldest. Younger members of the family include Randy, a junior; Vicki, a freshman; Karen, an eighth grader; Joan, a sixth grader: Douglas and Dennis, twins in the fourth grade. Her favorite sport is water skiing. “Gone With the Wind” and “An American Tragedy” are her favorite books and sewing is her hobby. . -WHSJANET KAY KAISER Janet Kay Kaiser is the daughter of Ben and Viola Kaiser of r 1 Milford. She will graduate in the spring with majors in business, English and home ec and minors in social studies. Home ec and business law are her favorites. Kay is a member of the student council, cheerblock, GAA, FRA and the Bethel youth. After graduation she would like to attend beauty school in Fort Wayne. Kay has a sister, Pam, who is a sophomore at Wawasee, a brother, Larry, who is in the seventh grade at Milford; another brother, Jay, in the second grade; and a baby sister, Julie. Basketball is Kay’s favorite sport and sewing and having fun are her hobbies. —WHSI—- — LOU YEAGER Sandra Lou Yeager has been accepted at Indiana university fcr the fall semester. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Yeager of r 3. Sandi will graduate with majors in English, social studies and math and minors in Spanish and science. Drama and English are her favorite subjects. “Gone with the Wind” and “Grapes of Wrath” are her favorite books. She is a member of the future teachers, national honor society, GAA, Block “W”, executive council, chorus, music club, language club, annual staff, newspaper staff, drama club and was in the band for three years. Sandi is also a member of the Church of God Youth. A junior high English award, district music awards and best staffer^’6s are among her accomplishments. She has an older brother, Tim, 19, a sophomore at Indiana university; and a younger sister, Susie, 15, a sophomore at Wawasee. In the summer Sandi works at Wawasee Boat Company. She is an avid movie fan and likes to write poetry. Volleyball, skiing, basketball and gymnastics are her favorite sports. Varner Chance. To Speak To Syracuse PTA The Syracuse P.T.A. will hold its January meeting ih the Syracuse junior high school cafeteria on Tuesdayevenihg, Jan. 21. The meeting Will start at 7:30 p.m. Varner Chance, fine arts coordinator of the Lakeland schools, will present the program that evening. Mr. Chance will present slides of the 1968 European tour of the School Band and Chorus of America. This fine group of young musicians throughout America travels to Europe each summer to present and promote American good will and friendship. Mr. Chance is the director of the choral group and will explain the program to the P.T.A. organization next Tuesday. Mrs. Freda Rinker, P.T.A. president, also announced that the winners of the membership drive will receive their awards at the January meeting. Parents and interested community members are invited to attend this program. Junior High Hi Lites WHAT’S HAPPENING By Jean Mellinger The North Webster junior high basketball team evidently came out toward the end of the line in their game against Milford on Thursday, Jan. 9. Hie final scores were — in the seventh grade, Webster acquired 26 points and the high scorer for the game was Jim Stout with a total of eight points. Milford ended up with eight points. The outcome of the eighth grades was Webster 31 and Milford 38 with Webster’s highest scorers being Mike Zurcher and Steve Stout, both with 10 total points. Coming up soon will be the instrumental music contest on Saturday, Jan. 25. It will be held at Knox and the contestants will perform throughout the day. LINDA’S LINES By Linda Lundquist Good Grief! Only one week end separates the students of Syracuse junior high school from the ’’week of dread.”’ Next week is the time for the semester exams. Last Friday evening was the eighth grade dance and party. All Syracuse eighth grade that had paid dues were allowed admission to the record hop. No band played. Tuesday evening saw the seventh grade basketball team beat Pierceton, although the eighth grade lost. Attention all Syracuse junior high! February 21 and 22 are the dates to remember. That week will see much activity in and around our school, as our science fair gets under Way. Be thinking about your entry and let’s make it the greatest fair ever! No Kindergarten Classes Jan. 23-24 Robert D. Hamman, principal of the Syracuse elementary school, has announced that kindergarten classes will not attend school next Thursday and Friday, Jan. 23 and 24. Special education classes and grades one through five will attend only in the morning on those two days. According to the policy of the school corporation, kindergarten and special education classes do not meet when school is only in session for half of a school day. The end of the first semester of the school year is January 24. The two afternoons school is not in session will be utilized by the teachers to grade semester tests, average grades and place grades on report cards. Studefits will not be served school lunches on Thursday or Friday.

6 From County In Music Programs NORTH MANCHESTER - Six Kosciusko county students at Manchester college were appointed to membership in music organizations at the college located in North Manchester, it was announced by the college department of music. Appointed from this area were: Pierceton — Cheryl Rider to the a cappella choir as accompanist. Cheryl is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arden Rider of r 1. She is a graduate of North Webster high school and is a sophomore at the college majoring in music. Mentone — J. David Tibbets is a member of the chapel choir. A freshman, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James J. Tibbets and is a music education major. Syracuse — Donna Huff, a sophomore, is a member of the chapel choir. Donna is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Hershberger of r 3. Warsaw — Wayne Senger is a member of the band. A sophomore aviation major, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Senger of r 5. Winona Lake — Greg Haney is a member of the chapel choir. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Robert Haney of 1103 Kings Highway and is a freshman at the college. J Winona Lake — Alan Retzman is a member of the a cappella choir. A graduate of Barrington Con., high school he is a senior. Alan is the son of Mrs. A. C. Retzman of 1601 Poplar avenue. Lakeland Youth News By Terry Auker Congratulations are in order for the Warriors. You did a real fine job in defeating Bremen. We had an excellent turn out for our dance Saturday night with about 300 youths participating. The Sands did a real good job and everyone seemed to enjoy them. Good Luck Warriors in your game against Mentone Friday night. We hope to see a victory like last week. After the basketball game there will be a dance featuring the 4th Hour. This is an outstanding hard rock group so we’ll see you at the dance. For some reason the ice skating rink isn’t being used and if there’s some reason why you feel it’s not satisfactory please let me know. If there’s enough interest in hockey maybe we can form a hockey team. Don’t forget about the WOWO- - game coming up soon. Get out and help support your school by selling as many tickets as possible. 101 Wawasee Seniors Have Plans To Further Their Education
A report on post high school plans of 159 Wawasee high school seniors shows 101 members of the 1969 graduating class plan to attend college or trade school after graduation. When asked if they were planing to attend a two-year or fouryear college next fall 74 members stated they were while 85 said no. Os this number 46 have made

Norm Geible Accepted At ICC For '69-70 Indiana Central college, Indianapolis, has announced that Norman Paul Geible, son of Rev. and Mrs. Merrell D. Geible, r 4 Syracuse, has been admitted “with distinction” to Indiana Central for the fall semester of the coming 1969-70 school year. Norman’s outstanding qualities as a student, leader and citizen in his high school and community indicate to ICC that he is worthy of this honor. The awards are being made to a limited number of students and selections are made from all applicants who are admitted for the coming year. Norm is a senior at Wawasee high school. He is president of both student council and national honor society. He is a member of the Lettermans club, the band and the debate-drama club. Norman will be the sixth member of his family to attend Indiana Central. MILFORD LOCALS Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sharp are vacationing in Pompano Beach. Fla. Mr. and Mrs. Blake Baumgartner and Jonathon will spend a week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Stafford at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., before going to North Carolina to make their new home.

Mrs. Hoerr Entertains Silver Thimble Club Mrs. Robert Hoerr entertained 26 members of the Silver Thimble club in her home west of Milford for the January meeting. Her co-hostess was Mrs. Howard Beer. Mrs. John Hurd gave each member her club book as she was seated. The 1969 president, Mrs. Glenn Price, Sr., opened the meeting. Mrs. Phil Campbell called the roll and reports were given by Mrs. Alvin Haab, Mrs. Bernard and Mrs. Elmer Hartter. It was decided to place a Bible with name inscribed in memory of the late Fred Wuthrich in his church pew. Far devotions Mrs. Arnold Doll read “A New Year’s Prayer” « by Helen Steiner Rice. Tsie hostesses served a buffet lunch featuring ham sandwiches from a table covered with an avocado lace cloth, flowers and candles. Mrs Jesse Beer won the door prize. Mrs. William Troup was a guest. The club will meet with Mrs. Richard Kaiser on February 4 with Mrs. Richard Hunsberger and Miss Edith Baumgartner as co-hostesses.
