Fire Destroys Bam Near Syracuse The Syracuse fire department assisted the Benton township, Elkhart county, fire department in fighting a fire at 6:30 a.m. Friday at the farm home of Herbert Blue. The fire totally destroyed a large barn, equipment and 21 head of hogs. A passerby notified Mr. Blue of the fire, however, by the time the fire equipment arrived the fire was blazing out of control. Three trucks were sent from Syraacuse. The firemen prevented the flames from spreading to the house and other buildings. The farm, located on OR 50, one-half mile east of 313, is being farmed by Don Thwaits. Most of the equipment and the hogs were his. It was believed that a heat bulb to keep water from freezing caused the fire with an estimated loss of at least $30,000. Mr. Blue said the loss is covered by insurance.
