Salmon In The Great Lakes Strange as it sounds, the day may come when Pacific Coast fishermen will travel to Chicago to go salmon fishing. Salmon, as the world knows, is the classic game fish of the Pacific Coast. The giant Chinooks and silvery Cohos are among the finest game fish known. Now, thanks to science and the vast reaches of the Great Lakes, millions of persons who never knew the thrill of hooking a salmon on sport tackle may enjoy the experience virtually on their own doorstep. Salmon have been introduced to the Great Lakes. And according to an article in Time magazine, midwest sport fishermen have invaded the lake regions by the tens of thousands. The story back of the importation of salmon to the Great Lakes is interesting, and it hinges on the use of modem chemicals developed by pesticide companies. Over the years, the natural game fish of the Great Lakes were destroyed by sea lampreys. The lampreys were eventually controlled by chemicals, and the way was opened to reintroduce game fish. The Michigan Department of Conservation transported salmon from the Pacific Coast as an experiment. The experiment succeeded beyond the conservationists’ highest hopes. Here is another instance where chemicals have aided in restoring and maintaining the balance of nature. The family of pesticides, which have suffered for so many years under the blight of misunderstanding and misinformation, is literally the key to the output of two of the most vital elements in man’s existence — food and fiber.
