REMEMBER... WHEN IT HAPPENED IN SYRACUSE ONE YEAR AGO James E. Fry, 300 south Lake street, was named assistant vice president of the State Bank of Syracuse effective January 1, 1968, it was announced this week by Harold W. H. Wellman, chairman of the bank’s board. Members of the Syracuse town board named two new officers at the regular meeting Tuesday night. Tom Strickler was named fire chief and Charles Vanderveer named city director of Civil Defense. Sunday, Dec. 24, at midnight, a special Christmas Mass will be offered at St. Martin de Porres Catholic church. Lester E. Darr, 65, died in his home December 16. Survivors are his widow, one son, four grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Ruby Culler was admitted to the Goshen hospital on Thursday. FIVE YEARS AGO Debra Carpenter was released this week from the Goshen hospital where she had been a patient since December 1 following a one car accident near Syracuse. Benjamin H. Traster, 75, a native of Syracuse, died December 11 at Garrett. Survivors are three sons, two sisters and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Edd Robison, r 3, entered Taylor hospital at Bluffton December 16. Mrs. William Pipp and Mrs. Estella Swartz spent Monday at South Bend. Mrs. Marie LeCount, r 3, left Sunday for Noblesville to spend a week with her son Corlyss LeCount. On Friday she will leave for Fort Myers Beach, Fla., to spend the winter. TEN YEARS AGO George Manis bid $l6O to win the 1959 RT 1 auto license plate at the Syracuse license branch Saturday night. Syracuse schools will close December 23 at 11 a.m. for the Christmas vacation. The vacation will continue until Monday, Jan. 5. The children of the Legion auxiliary are to meet in the Legion hall December 20 at 2 to 3 p.m. for a Christmas party and treat. Saturday evening a fire caused by an oil heater in a house trailer behind Weaver’s Tool shop was extinguished soon after arrival of firemen. Mr. and Mrs. James Millonberger are the parents of a daughter born December 2 in the Goshen hospital. TWENTY YEARS AGO As has been the custom for many years, the choir of the Methodist church will present to the community a Christmas cantata. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Rapp spent Saturday at Muncie where they attended the Ball State - DePauw basketball game. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Arthur Wagner in the Goshen hospital December 9. Gordon Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Smith, has enlisted in the U.S. army and is now at

Goodwill Extension Homemakers Club Christmas Meeting Members of the Goodwill Extension Homemakers club met Wednesday in the House of Friendship south of Syracuse. A Christmas party was held starting with a noon pot luck at a long table decorated in the holiday theme. A brief business meeting was held including meditations by Mrs. Sherman Deaton and group singing. Several Christmas cards were sent to members unable to attend due to illness or being out of state. A gift exchange was held and Mrs. Paul Brewer won the door prize. Mrs. Everett Darr Will be hostess for the January meeting with Mrs. Elmer Baugher assisting. ARTHUR BAUMGARTNER, MILFORD, HOSTS GUESTS Arthur Baumgartner of Milford had as house guests over the week end, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Anliker of Wolcott. Mrs. Anliker is a cousin of the host. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee Beer of r 2 Milford entertained at dinner Sunday for the Anlikers, who are uncle and aunt of Mrs. Beer. Other dinner guests were Miss Edith Baumgartner, Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Beer, and Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Beer of Milford. After dinner guests were Howard Beer, Mr. and Mrs. Theo Beer and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hartter. Mr. and Mrs. Anliker were Saturday supper guests of Mrs. Elizabeth Buser of Milford. They left Monday noon for Bremen to call on Mr. Anliker’s uncle, William Leman, and wife before returning home. Mrs. Richard Haberstich of Goshen called on friends at Syracuse on Tuesday. Camp Breckenridge, Ky. Mrs. Lottie Mae DeHart, 61, of Toledo, Ohio, a former Syracuse resident, died Monday in a Toledo hospital. Survivors are the husband, five children, nine grandchildren, three brothers and a half-brother. FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO Mrs. Helen Howe spent a few days at Chicago the guest of Miss Ida Deardorff. Mrs. William McClintic is quite ill in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sam Rasor, south Huntington street. The annual soldiers dinner was held December 8 in the basement of the Lutheran church. Eighty-four attended. Mr. and Mrs. John McGarity entertained the members of the Order of the Eastern Star to a chicken supper Monday night. Mrs. William DePew of Elkhart was a guest Monday and Tuesday of Mrs. R. E. ’Thornburg.
