REMEMBER... WHEN IT HAPPENED IN SYRACUSE ONEYEAR AGO The Syracuse uptown business district is well lighted with the customary Yuletide decorations and lights. The Syracuse - Wa'wasee Garden club entertained 175 guests at its December party entitled “A Prelude to Christmas” Tuesday evening in the fellowship hall of the Methodist church. Herman Brockers was elected worshipful master of Syracuse Masonic lodge 454, F and A M at the meeting Monday night. Mrs. George Glass, 56, died on December 10 in Miller’s Merry Manar at Warsaw. Survivors include her husband, three daughters, a son, six grandchildren, four brothers and three sisters. Mr. and Mrs. Martin B. Brown announce the birth of an eight pound, four ounce son in the naval hospital at Providence, R. I. Mrs. Brown is the former Sally Mabie of Syracuse. FIVE YEARS AGO The Syracuse high school music department under the direction of James Lentz will present its annual Christmas concert at 2 p.m. December 15. Mrs. Melville Smith of Pearl street will leave Sunday for Sarasota, Fla., to spend six weeks. Charles J. Shuder, 80, of r 1 died in the Goshen hospital Sunday. Survivors are a son, three daughters, nine grandchildren, a brother and a sister. Mr. and Mrs. James Gilbert will quietly observe their golden wedding anniversary December 15 with a familw-dkmer nt Howard’s restaurant, south of town. Kent Hare of Lake Wawasee killed the first deer at the TriCounty game preserve this year. The animal weighed 150 pounds. TEN YEARS AGO Santa Claus will be at the public library December 13 in the afternoon to great children and bring them gifts. Syracuse Yellow Jackets eased out a one-point win 61-60 over Mentone Bulldogs Friday night at Mentone. Miss Jane Kroh, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Kroh, completed her course in nurses training at Methodist hospital, Indianapolis, the last of November and is spending some time at home. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Penn left Sunday for Miami Beach, Fla., where they will spend the winter. Majorie Miles Kaplan, native of Syracuse, died early Wednesday aLChicago. Memorial services will be held at Syracuse. TWENTY YEARS AGO An embolism suffered while he was dressing before being released from the Goshen hospital resulted in the sudden death of Spencer L. Heerman, 34. He is survived by his wife, a threeweeks’ old son, and his mother. ■Mrs. Ed Unrue and Mrs. Keith Cripe spent Tuesday at Elkhart. Mrs. Esther Osborn spent from Wednesday until Sunday at Culver with her parents, Rev. and Mrs. Teidt. The fire department was called to the Fred Campbell home about 11 p.m. Wednesday. A defective stove pipe caused a smoke scare but no damage resulted. Old Santa Claus will make his annual Christmas visit here to the lighted tree at the Syracuse grade school on Saturday. FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hinderer entertained the following at a 6 p.m. chicken dinner on Thanksgiving: Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Brown, Mrs. Lucy Butt and children, Mr. and iMrs. Russell Hinderer and children, Mrs. Susan Nicolai and Harry Stone. Miss Mary Patterson of Decatur came on Wednesday and visited until, Saturday with her sister, Mrs: Joe Rapp. Miss Watts of South Bend and Mr. and Mrs. F. F. Harris and children of Elkhart spent Thanksgiving with Mr. and Mrs. William Watts. Edward L. Schlecht of near Vawter Park school went to Detroit, Mich., Thursday for a few days’ visit with friends. Bennet Morgan of Chesterton sold the building now occupied by Thornburg Drug and Jewelry Store to R. E. Thornburg, the present occupant. Third Singspiration Set For Sunday The Golden Rule Community church, 1220 south 11th street, Goshen, will have its third singspiration on Sunday evening, Dec 15, at 7 o’clock. The singing Grace family of Elkhart will present a pre-Christ-mas musical treat for the evening’s service. They have become familiar in the Goshen churches. Their duets, quartets, solos and musical instruments
4’ The Bible's Answer: ETERNAL LIFE He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life: but the wrath of God abideth on him . . . John 3:36. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on Him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation, but is passed from death unto life .. . John 5:24. Thought: There are many in the church as well as out of it who need to learn that Christianity is neither a creed nor a ceremonial, but a life vitally connected with a loving Christ. SUNDAY’S SERMON “For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” This verse from the 91st Psalm will be part of the Scriptural selections in this week’s Bible Lesson - Sermon to be read in all Christian Science churches this week. The Lesson is titled “God the Preserver of Man”. Related passages to be read from the denominational textbook include the following: “Whatever is governed by God, is never for an instant deprived of the light and might of intelligence and Life”. The textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, was written by the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. Looking Uo Class Has Christmas Party The Looking Up class of the Syracuse Church of the Brethren had its annual Christmas party at Foo and Faye’s Thursday evening, Dec. 5. Mrs. Fred Hapner gave the scripture. “Day of Hope”, “Night of Nights” and “Thanksgiving” were read by Mrs. Charles Vanderveer, Mrs. Lloyd Kammerdiener and Mr. Vanderveer. Mrs. Jerry Hapner presented “What Child is This” and “Wish You a Merry Christmas”. Group singing of carols and a gift exchange were also enjoyed. Present in addition to those mentioned above were Rev. and Mrs. Ralph Wagoner, Mr. and Mrs. Max Simon, Mr. and Mrs. Darell Bowman, Mr. and Mrs. James Fackler, Lloyd Kammerdiener, Fred Hapner and Jerry Hapner. Mrs. Brake Entertains Syracuse-Wawasee Garden Club The Syracuse - Wawasee Garden club held its last meeting of the year at the lakeside home of Mrs. W. E. Brake. Mrs. Brake was assisted in entertaining by Mrs. R. C. Tytler. The officers for the past year were Mrs. Maurice Koher, president; Mrs. Tytler, vice presid?nt; Mrs. Gale Chapman, secretary; and Mrs. George Kleopher, treasurer. The evening was spent informally discussing Christmas decorations and planning for the guest night to the “Prelude to Christmas”,, which was held Tuesday, Dec. 10, in the fellowship hall of the Saint Andrew’s United Methodist church. It was also decided to furnish and decorate for Christmas a cottage at the Fort Wayne state school.
