Milford Board Buys Christmas Decorations
Members of the Milford town board voted Monday evening to purchase $315 worth of permanent Christmas decorations for the town. Board members ordered green and gold garlands with “sugar plum” lights for nine poles along the town’s Main street from the General Plastics Corporation of Marion. J. Barclay Johnson, a representative of the company, was present at the meeting and told board members how small towns purchased decorations. Most are on limited funds so they buy a few items each year thus being able to purchase nice decoration within their budget. Carl Duncan, president of the board, and member John F. Augsburger went to Marion on Tuesday to pick up the town’s order. The decorations should be up by the week end. Augsburger Resigns Mr. Augsburger submitted his resignation during the evening’s business. He was recently elected to the post of state senator. Board members are currently trying to find a replacement. It was decided to have the town’s attorney ’ William I. Gerrard attend only the meetings the board feels it necessary to attend. In the past the attorney has attended all town board meetings. A motion was made and passed to purchase the water tapping equipment from the Milford Electric shop at a cost of SSO. Chrk - treasurer Edith Baumgartner reported a complaint had been received from the Dan Leverniers on the street being too dark. The Leverniers reside on the corner of Catherine and Main. She also told the board about dogs running loose and of children crawling under trains that were stopped in town. It was noted cars coming into Milford from the east on Catherine street are ignoring the speed limit signs. A check has been received from Little and Clark Insurance for SIOO to be used for the bath house being built at the park on Waubee Lake. Board members, contractors from Doty Construction and townsmen met at the lake at 8 a.m. today (Wednesday) to begin work on the building. Water Meters A discussion was held on reading the water meters in town. It was stated there are close to
400 meters in the town of Milford and the man who reads them must go back to one-third or onehalf of the houses because the residents are' not home. The only application received was that of Charles Schell. President Duncan was to have talked to Mr. Schell about the job yesterday morning. Present in addition to those mentioned above were member Gerald Martin and police officer Jon Hershberger. Silver Thimble Christmas Dinner Last Evening A lovely Christmas dinner was enjoyed by thirty members of the Silver Thimble club of Milford when Kentucky fried chicken and ham were served in a restaurant at Warsaw last evening. At the head table were seated the committee who was Mrs. Robert He err, Mrs. Earl Kammerer, and Mrs. Philip Beer: Mrs. Howard Beer, 1968 president; Mrs. Glenn Price, Sr., 1969 president: and Mrs. Elmer Hartter, 1968 devotions leader. The table was decorated with a white lighted angel, white lighted candles, pine boughs, blue ornaments, and flicker lights. A large star In colored lights was on the wall. The tables where the guests sat were decorated similar to the head table. At each place was a small white angel mounted on a styrofoam block trimmed in blue ribbon. The program consisted of singing by Fred Hoerr, Tom Speicher, Sarah Beer, and Janet Beer with guitar accompaniment by Tom Speicher. Their songs were “What Child Is This?” “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day”, and “Silent Night”, with the last verse of the later song sung in German. Mrs. Philip Beer read “Christmas Hash”, Mrs. Elmer Hartter read the Christmas story from the 2d chapter of Saint Luke, and Christmas carols were sung. Each member was asked to write a four line poem about Christmas to be read before she opened her gift. In a short business meeting, hostess names were drawn for 1969. The evening of December 17 was set for club caroling, later to go to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Doll for a social time. At the close of the evening punch and holiday dainties were served from a table holding a beautiful blue punch bowl and a lovely blue novelty Christmas tree. The January meeting will be held with Mrs. Howard Beer. MILLER THANKSGIVING HELD IN WEISSER HOME A highlight of the annual Miller Thanksgiving dinner held at the Fred Weisser home near Milford was the presence of Sgt. James W. Miller, who returned from Korea on Tuesday. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Miller of Goshen. A telephone call was received from Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Cory of Houston, Texas. Mr. Cory is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Neal Cory of near Milford. Those from Goshen attending were Mr. and Mrs. Carl Yoder and Jeri Lynn, Mr. and Mrs. Walter “Skip” Miller and Anita, Mr. and Mrs. Dave Eshelman and family and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Miller and family.
