Wrestling Begins Thursday At Wawasee High School _
A new varsity sport will be started this year at Wawasee high school — wrestling. The Grappling Warriors will be entering into a full conference schedule with Fairfield, West Noble and Pierceton rounding out the first-year schedule. Monday night an intrasquad meet was held to determine the probable starting line-up for Wawasee Thursday night with Fairfield. The varsity line-up will probably be as follows: 95 lb. — Clark Rassi 103 lb. — Alan Butt 112 lb. — Jay DeSomer 120 lb. — Steve Cobum 127 lb. — Jeff Corn 133 lb. — Jay Anglin 138 lb. — Stan Kilmer 145 lb. — Wes Kilmer 154 lb. — Dale Custer 165 lb. — Kent Wilson 175 lb. — Dave Baumgartner Unlimited — Roger Korenstra The main objective in wrestling is to wrestle your opponent until you pin his shoulders to the mat for a two-second count. Obviously, you must tangle with someone your own size, hence the 12 different weight categories mentioned above. Violent holds, hitting, scratching, etc. are prohibited; therefore, speed, agility, knowledge of the principles of leverage and blance, and strength are the skills that comprise high school werestling. Each boy in each weight class tries to win points for the team. If he successfully "pins” (a fall) his man, the team is awarded five points. If he cannot “pin” his man, he then can score three team points by accumulating more individual points than his opponent. Individual points are scored by making certain successful moves: Takedown (two points) — occurs when wrestlers, from a neutral position (both standing, neither having control of the other) gains control of his opponent and takes him down to the mat. Escape (1 point) — occurs when the defensive wrestler (the one underneath trying to get away> gets away completely from his man into a neutral position. Reversal J two points) — occurs when the defensive wrestler comes from underneath and gains control of his opponent (their positions are reversed). Fall (five team points) — occurs when offensive wrestler has his opponent’s shoulders (or sca-

pula area) held in contact with the mat area for a full two-sec-ond count. A fall is often called a pin. Near-fall (three points) — occurs when the offensive wrestler has the opponent in control with the shoulders (scapula area) held in contact with the mat for one second. Predicament (two points) — occurs when the offensive wrestler has his opponent in a pinning situation (a possible fall) and a) both shoulders are stopped or held within four inches of the mat or less, or b) one shoulder of his opponent is touching the mat and the other shoulder is held in an angle of 45 degrees or less. Miscellaneous — miscellaneous individual points can be awarded at the discretion of the referee for technical violations, illegal holds, stalling, etc. In some cases a warning preceeds awarding of these points. At the conclusion of three twominute periods, the wrestler with the most accumulated points, assuming no prior fall, wins the match. This scores three team points. In individual scoring a take-

Warriors Bow To Fairfield, 70-59
By Ric Clingaman The Warriors of Wawasee, coached by Vernon Zurcher, suffered defeat on the hardwood Wednesday night as they lost their third straight game against Fairfield 70-59. Steve Zurcher led the Warriors in scoring with 24 points and Ben Fowler added 13 for the team. The Warriors got off to a good start in early action of the game but because of certain factors they could not hold the Falcons scoring. Gary Firestone, who was high point man in the Westview game, had a touch of the flu during the week and wasn’t quite up to par as he only scored two points. Bill Pipp showed his ability on the boards as he brought down 27 rebounds along with nine points for the mighty Warriors. The last quarter, the Warriors put on a full court press and e racked up six quick points, but, in late action of the fourth quarter, junior guard, Steve Zurcher, Went to the bench with five personals and as the last few seconds ticked off the Warriors were faced with their third defeat of the 1968-69 season. The Warriors will play Concord Friday at 6:30.
