Letter From Stream Pollution Board
Milford clerk - treasurer Edith Baumgartner received the following letter last week from the state stream pollution control board on the condition of Waubee Lake. Several persons became alarmed last summer when the surface of the lake became covered with a green substance. The “algae” is explained in the letter. The text of the letter follows: “During the summer, representatives of this office conducted a biological and bacteriological survey of Waubee Lake. Results of bacteriological analyses

of samples collected during this survey disclosed that the total coliform bacteria concentration at the inlet on the south shore of the lake exceeded the established limit for swimming and other activities requiring total body contact. However, the fecal coliform concentration at this station was less than 10 per 100 ml. which is well below the recommended single sample limit of 4CO/100 ml. for total body contact. Therefore, it is likely that the lake at this point was free of sewage pollution. “The total coliform and fecal coliform concentrations at all
other lake sampling stations met the established and recommended standards for total body contact. “A sample collected at a county road bridge over a small stream which enters Waubee Lake from the south contained total coliform and fecal coliform concentrations which exceeded the established and recommended limits for total body contact. However, these concentrations were within the limits for waters us~d for wading and other activities requiring only partial body contact. It is unlikely that this stream was significantly effecting the bacterial quality of water in Waubee Lake. Alge "Analyses of biological samples collected during this survey and during other inspections of Waubee Lake made this year disclosed that the lake supports a heavy concentration of floating bluegreen alge during the summer months. This algae was responsible for the green scum and odors in the lake. “Algal blooms occur when the concentration of nutrients in a lake reach a certain point and if all other environmental factors are favorable. The stock of nutrients present at any point in <4 time is essentially the sum total of nutrients that have entered the lake since its formation. The rate of nutrient accumolation is influenced by the fertility of the surrounding soil and by the activities of man in the watershed.

How Many Wise Men? Answers Are Many!
Three wise men? In New Testament stories of the Nativity, only St. Matthew tells of “wise men from the east” — and how many,, wise men followed the star to the manger is not stated. Contrary to popular belief, algal blooms are not necessarily associated with pollution. Object’cnable algal blooms may be prevented by the application of copper sulphate to the water surface as soon as it becomes apparent that the algal concentration is aoproaching bloom proportions. Although the number of applications needed each year will be largely determined by climatological conditions, it is lively that three or mere treatments will be required annually if desirable lake conditions are to be maintained. “If the town of Milford is interested in initiating or participating in a program to control algae in Waubee Lake, it is suggested that you contact biologists from the division of fish and game, department of natural resources, for advice and as- | sistance. “Representatives of this office will continue to periodically check Waubee Lake to determine if the conditions noted during our survey and inspections are representative of the average conditions which exist in the lake.”
The tradition that there were three probably comes from St. Matthew’s description of three gifts — gold, frankincense and myrrh. Another explanation for the number three is the legend that the wise men symbolized all humanity, in turn represented by the races of Shem, Ham and Japhet, according to the editors of The New Book of Knowledge. Early traditions mention varying numbers of wise men. Twelve was the number traditional in the Eastern church, while in the West, mosaics and paintings showed sometimes two, sometimes three, four or more wise men. During the sixth century, the idea that there were three came to be generally accepted. In legends, the wise men were given names: Melhior, Gasper, Baltasar. Although St. Mathew did not use the name “Magi/’ he implied it when he wrote of “wise men,” for “magi” was commonly used in Palestine to mean “great, illustrious.” Today, Nativity scenes show three wise men or Magi present at the manger along with the shepherds, who hastened to Bethlehem on the night Christ was bom. Some historians, however, believe that the visit of the Magi didn’t take place until much later — perhaps a year or even two years after the birth of Christ.
