Warriors Lose To By 3 Points

The Wawasee Warriors dropped their second straight cage contest by three points, this time a 75-72 thriller to the Carroll Chargers in a game played at New Haven Friday night. Steve Zurcher, 5-11 junior, led both teams in scoring with 24 points and broke the Wawasee individual season’s scoring high of 16 points set in last week’s game against Westview by junior Gary Firestone. Zurcher also led in the team in assists with seven. Both teams hauled down 42 rebounds with senior Bill Pipp leading the wav for the Warriors with nine. Three teammates pulled down eight rebounds; they were senior Larry Kammerer, Firestone and Zurcher. Zurcher opened the scoring for the Warriors, Pipp followed with a two-pointer plus a free throw and Kammerer and Firestone each added baskets to give Wawasee a nine point lead before host Carroll could break into the scoring column. The Chargers, playing in this season opener, found themselves trailing by as many as 11 points in the first quarter. Pipp provided the scoring spark for the Warriors in the first period action as he tossed in nine points but also ran into foul trouble by picking up three personals. As the period ended, Wawasee had rolled up a 11-point 23-12 margin. Hie Carroll rally left Wawasee in a slight state of disarray and as the half ended, the Warriors trailed an inspired Charger “5” by one point, 35-34. At the start of the fourth quarter, the Warriors Bill Pipp went to the sidelines at 6:29 with five

personals. Unlike last week’s game, which saw four Warrior regulars make the journey to the bench in later action, only Pipp was lost in the final period via the foul route. As the game entered the final minute Carroll stubbornly clung to its 74-68 lead. The Warriors made one final desperate bid to catch up but fell short again as the game ended. The Warriors will be looking for their first victory tonight against Fairfield at the Syracuse junior high gym at 6:30. Gifts For Women Who Sew When your Christmas gift list includes women who sew, here are ideas for gifts they’re sure to enjoy, says Mrs. Lois Gotwals, extension clothing and textiles specialist at Purdue university. For example, why not buy a new pair of shears? This gift will be appreciated each time a sewing project is undertaken. Choose from the several sizes available for sewing, from large dressmaker shears for cutting out fabric to small scissors for trimming and clipping threads. Look for bent handles if you are buying dressmaker shears. Then the fabric will lie flat for more accurate cutting. And buy the best you can afford. Top quality scissors need less frequent sharpening. Electric scissors have proved especially helpful for cutting heavy or slippery fabrics and

Carroll Yellow Jackets Down Knights Last evening saw the Syracuse Yilow Jackets hand the ClayLake Knights their first defeat in an overtime 24-23. Dwight Dean playing his first game scored 13 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Other outstanding players on defense were Jay Jones and Rany Niles. At the end of the third quarter Syracuse was ahead 19-17, and the regulation game ended 2323. In playing a three minute overtime With 17 seconds left, Randy Nil's was fouled. Niles went to the foul line and on a one and one made the first shot but missed the second; after missing his last free throw he got the rebound and time ran out. In the seventh grade game the Clay-Lake Knights defeated Syracuse 37-19. The next Syracuse game is on Monday, Dec. 2, at North Webster. Game time: 6 p.m. would be a favorite gift for the seamstress who doesn’t own a pair. You can now buy battery operated scissors which eliminate worry about cutting the electrical cord or finding a cutting soot near an electrical outlet. Try out electric scissors before you buy them, however, Mrs. Gotwals urges. Some brands are more convenient to start and stop and easier to hold than others. A dressmakers cutting board is an ideal gift choice for the woman who usually lays out her fabric and pattern on the kitchen table or bed. The board not only protects such surfaces but its helpful markings also help to keep fabric grainline straight. Since all women want to keep up with the latest fashions, a woman who makes many of her clothes would welcome a subscription to a pattern magazine. Mrs. Gotwals points out. She also suggests a subscription to a fabric service. Who knows, maybe next year you’ll receive a custom made garment from the appreciative seamstress! Throughout the Christmas season in Rumania many dramatic remembrances of the story of Christ’s birth are enacted.
