? <MH jrwhU ANOTHER FOR WESTVIEW — Going up for another bucket for Westview at the season’s first game, played in the Syracuse junior high gym Friday night, is tall, able Cliff Thompson, number 53. He got 41 points for the Westview Warriors, and proved the nemesis for the Wawasee Warriors. While he is surrounded by all five players on the home team, they were unable to stop Thompson, as was the case throughout the game.
Warriors Tripped By Westview, 67-70
By Ric Clingaman The Wawasee Warriors, playing their first cage outing in the school’s young history, dropped a tension-filled 70-67 contest to the visiting Westview Warriors in a game played in the Syracuse junior high school gym Friday night. The first and fourth quarters appeared to be the key to Wawasee’s final defeat. In the first quarter, the Warriors lost the services of their junior guard, Steve Zurcher, who was sidelined for the game in a spectacular spill. In the fourth quarter, inexperience, loss of players because of foul trouble and the inability to overcome a tough Westview press all contributed to the eventual outcome. As the first quarter started, the Warriors jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when Gary Firestone hit on the game’s first shot but Westview came right back to knot it up at two apiece. Wawasee slowly edged ahead to a six-point lead midway into the quarter behind the continued hot shooting of Firestone who pumped in six points during the stretch. Westview’s Warriors kept within striking distance throughout the first quarter as Thompson pumped in 15 of his teams 19 first quarter points. The Warriors fought off a determined bid by the visitors to unseat them near the end of the first quarter and the opening

stanza ended in a 19-19 tie. As the second quarter started, Wawasee’s 6-2 center, Bill Pipp, went to the bench with three personals. At two minutes into the quarter, a driving lay-up by Westview’s Thompson put the visitors into the lead 24-23, the first time they had been in command since the opening minutes of the game. The last half proved to be quite exciting as the Warriors were faced with quite a number of fouls, and Westview was coming up on scoring as the third quarter ended with the Warriors leading by a mere three points. As the fourth quarter began, four Warriors carried four personals into the game. Kammerer was the first to go to the bench with 6:50 of the final frame and Firestone followed 48 seconds later. Pipp eventually joined his teammates on the bench and in the final crucial minutes of the game the Warriors played without four of their starting five. The last two minutes of the game proved to be the turning point as Westview jumped ahead by one and connected on two free throws for the /final score, 70-67. Gary Firestone led the Warriors with 16 points while Andy Hartley added 15.

Wolf Lake Defeats Syracuse The Syracuse Yellow Jackets were defeated by Wolf Lake Monday night 33-20. Ulis was the second defeat in as many games for the Yellow Jackets. Jay Jones was the high scorer with seven points while also bringing down 12 rebounds. Even though Syracuse lost they showed much improvement on defense, but were very cold in shooting from the floor. Defeat can best be contributed to shooting only 20 per cent which was eight field goals for 41 shots. Because of the equal amount of scoring from the opponents, Syracuse was unable to concentrate on any one man. Leading scorers for Wolf Laker were K. Stump and T. Mangan each having seven points. The next Syracuse game will be at Claypool on November 25; game time 6 p.m. MILFORD—LEESBURG Hospital Notes Allen D.
