Wowosee Warriors In First Game Friday Night

Meet Westview At Syracuse Friday night will be the unveiling of the new Wawasee high school basketball team — the Wawasee Warriors — as they meet Westview in the Syracuse gym. The first several home games will be played at the Syracuse gym, but coach Zurcher hopes to be ready in the new high school gym for the Warsaw game on December 13. Eager school patrons got a preview of the new team they will be following in a pre-season “sweat-in” on Monday night. .The varsity played the “B” team and freshman team in an attempt to work off any jitters they might have. Real Work Out Coach Vernon Zurcher, who comes to Wawasee high school as a three-time sectional winner at Adams Central, is giving his players a real work out, planning a hard offensive team to keep their opponent ever on guard. Zurcher guided the Adams Central squad to a 79-37 record in his five years there, winning sectionals in 1964 and 1965 and at Portland in 1966. He coached at Larwill for five years before going 1 .0 Central at Monroe. With Zurcher comes his son, 5-11 Steve Zurcher, a junior, who was a starter at Adams Central as a sophomore and all-sectional honors at Bluffton last spring. Larry Hammerer, only 5-10, comes to the Warriors with the highest point record of any from the parent schools. He played with the Milford Trojans last year and scored 207 points in 21 games. Ben Fowler, 5-8 senior, moved into the corporation from northern Michigan where he was a varsity star. A1 Barrett, a 6-2 junior, comes to the team from North Webster where he lettered, and Gary Fire>-

He added, “Due to our height, we plan to play a lot of pattern basketball, using the fast break When we have the opportunity.” “As a team, we will use the pressure defense, playing for the percentage shot and try to keep the opponents off balance by a changing defense, using both a man-for-man and a zone.” “A changing defense is one of the finest assets in basketball,” notes the coach, who addes that,

Fans Get Peek At Wawasee Warriors Lakeland basketball fans got a peek at the Wawasee Warriors Monday night at the Syracuse gym, and at the same time gave the tall ones a chance to work off some pre-season jitters. The varsity team, B-team and freshman team suited up and played heats of two quarters each. A fairly large number of fans, many of them proud parents, and others hard core fans, were on hand to size up the material for the year. The first game will be played in the Syracuse gym Friday night, Nov. 15, against Westview. It was noted most of the fans liked what they saw, but no one, including coach Vernon Zurcher and his assistant Mike Kurtz were over optimistic. Coaching the Monday night matches were Merl Heckaman and Rudy Stegelman, both of Warsaw. They took time out to explain new rulings and to demonstrate them. They said, few changes were made this year. The pre-season get - together also gave cheerleaders a chance to perform, and to perfect their cheering techniques.
