Zurcher’s Warriors To Play First Game Nov. 15

Wawasee high school varsity basketball coach Vernon Zurcher’s Wawasee Warriors will have their first outing on their home court on Friday, Nov. 15, when they meet the boys from Westview at 6:30. Wawasee will play its home games in the Syracuse junior high school gym until the high school gym is completed. Presently the Warriors are hard at work practicing. Coach Zurcher has yet to name his team. On the schedule for the Warriors are 10 home games, eight to be played elsewhere and a four-way tournament and the sectional. In the four-way tourney with Wawasee are Columbia City, Fort Wayne Central and Portage. Conference games will be played with Concord, Warsaw, Manchester, Plymouth, Bremen, Nappanee and Rochester. The sectional tournament is set for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27 to March 1. The place will be named later in the season by the Indiana High School Athletic Association. Wawasee Drops 20-0 Battle With Rochester Wednesday

The Wawasee freshman football team, hampered by costly mistakes, dropped a 20-0 battle to Rochester on the new Wawasee gridiron on Wednesday. The young Warriors now have a 4-3 record with the season finale coming up Tuesday, Oct. 22, when they host Columbia City at 5:30. Syracuse JH Defeats Warsaw Syracuse junior high school defeated Warsaw by a score of 7-0 recently for its fourth victory in five contests. Tlie leading rusher for the Yellow Jackets was Kim Cripe who gained 60 yards in 12 carries for an average of 5.0 yards per carry. The first and only touchdown came in the second quarter on a three yard run by Greg Ummel. The extra point was scored on a fake kick and a pass from Dwight Dean to Doug Smith. Excellent running by Dwight Dean and Randy Brady kept Warsaw from concentrating on just one runner. Dwight Dean ran for an average of 4.7 yards and Randy Brady for 4.6. Fine defensive play by Jay Jones, Brad Butler and Steve Schumpf kept Warsaw from advancing the ball. Fog Causes Area Accident An accident at the intersection of U.S. 30 and Indiana 9 at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, was blamed on the morning fog. The eastbound 1960 Ford car driven by Scott L. Phillips, 61, of Pierceton, had stopped for the traffic signal to turn green when his car was struck from the rear by the 1965 Mercedes Benz driven by Donald O’Carroll of Lore City, Ohio. O’Carroll told investigating officer, sheriff Harold Taulbee, he did not see the Phillips car until too late to avoid the collision due to the heavy fog. . Season Tickets On Sale Nov. 4 At Wawasee

Wawasee high school basketball season tickets will go on sale November 4. Adults can purchase tickets at the high school office. High school students may purchase adult and student tickets from Mrs. Rider in the commons. Junior high and elementary students may purchase season tickets from the principal’s office of their respective schools. Adult tickets will be sold only at the high school. The office wilt be open until 5 for your convenience. Wawasee high school will have 10 home games this season. Season tickets will be sold at the door. Deaths Benjamin Hively Benjamin Hively, 78, Burket, father of Frank Hively of Leesburg, died at 11:50 p.m. Monday in the Murphy Medical Center. Surviving with the above named son are six daughters, six sons, two step-sons, two step-daughters, 41 grandchildren, 46 great-grand-children, and three sisters. Services will be held at 1:30 p. m. Thursday at the McHatton funeral home in Warsaw and burial will be in the Washington-Un-ion cemetery at Pierceton.
