REMEMBER ... WHEN IT HAPPENED IN SYRACUSE ONE YEAR AGO About 150 local residents gathered at Camp Grissom Sunday to dedicate the new chapel of troop and pack 28 boy scouts in memory of Hugh Neer. The Syracuse PTA is making plans for the Halloween carnival to be held October 21. Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Charters are the parents of a son bom October 7 in the Goshen hospital. Cressell J. Kitson, 82, r 1, died in the Goshen hospital Sunday. Survivors are his wife, one son, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Bertha Nicolai of Syracuse and Gerson Brownstein of Fairfax, Va., were married at Fairfax recently. FIVE YEARS AGO Beufcrd Scarbeary, 44, of r 1, was injured in a head-on collision Thursday evening at the B and O railroad crossing on Huntington street. He was taken to the Goshen hospital. Mrs. Estella Swartz celebrated her 82d birthday on October 7. Several parties and dinners were given in her honor. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Dowty are the parents of a son born Tuesday in the Murphy Medical Center. The Syracuse Craft club met at the Morris Inn on the Notre Dame campus for its- first- meeting of the season. The club toured Saint Mary’s college. Rex Reynolds is in northern Michigan bird hunting. He is with a party from Warsaw. TEN YEARS AGO The Syracuse baseball team won the second county crown in a week Friday when it defeated Sidney 3-2. Bill Hess took before the town board Tuesday night, the need for new radio equipment for the fire department. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Grindle, r 1, are the parents of a daughter born Saturday in the Goshen hospital. Miss Priscilla Rhode left Monday for Park Ridge, 111., after spending the week end with her mother, Mrs. Edith Rhode. Mrs. Clara Ray, 84, of r 3, died Wednesday in the Kilgore nursing home near Pierceton. Survivors are three sons, a daughter, and a sister. TWENTY YEARS AGO Joe R. Bushong was named a member of the Syracuse town council Tuesday night. Lt. Colonel W. K. Pfingst spent the week end with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold A. Pfingst. Rev. and Mrs. J. C. Bailey attended the homecoming at the Center EUB church Sunday. A trap shoot will be held Sunday at the Rentfrow farm south of Syracuse on road 13. The shoot will start at 9 a.m. Flames of undetermined origin Friday night destroyed a large storage building of the Stiefel Grain company. The building was said to have been built in 1875. FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO Mrs. Ross Osborn was hostess to the Ladies of the Round Table this week. Mrs. H. R. Deßra of Gary and her daughter and husband of Plymouth spent Sunday with the former’s mother, Mrs. Jane Bushong. Mr. and Mrs. Hershel Harkless and Mr. and Mrs. Ocal Craft spent Saturday and Sunday at Michigan City. Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Ketering and Mr. and Mrs. Sol Miller attended the funeral of William L. Young at Goshen Sunday afternoon. Mr. Young was a brother-in-law of Mr. Ketering. Norman Strieby has gone to Chicago where he has accepted a position as chief clerk with the Illinois Steel Mills.

It is e . a warfare with the flesh, in which we must conquer sin, sickness, and death, either here or hereafter, — certainly before we can reach the goal of Spirit, or life in God.” Hex Rural Club Enjoys Tour Members of the Hex Rural Extension Homemakers club went to the Oaklawn Psychiatric Center in Elkhart Tuesday evening where a very capable guide took them on a tour through the center. The guide gave an interesting talk on the sources of emotional illness in the community and the help the center gives to the patients’ emotional problems. She described and told the use of each room and the many activities at the center. Mrs. William Cable, president, conducted a short business meeting. The members talked on mental health. There were three guests, Mrs. Kenneth Nicolai, Mrs. Donald Twaits and Mrs. Forrest Fackler, all of Syracuse, present. The next meeting will be held on Monday afternoon, Nov. 4, at 1:30 in the home of Mrs. Oliver Hibschman. Members are to take items for a silent auction. ELLEN LEITCH AT EIT Miss Ellen Leitch, daughter of Mrs. Lillian Leitch of r 1 Syracuse, has enrolled in the medical -receptionist course at the Elkhart Institute of Technology, Elkhart. She started her training on September 23.
