_ J A REVIEW — 'THE RIVALS' n The play ‘The Rivals’ by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, was presented last Sunday at the WAF playhouse. This is the second play in the Wawasee Arts Foundation repertory. Jane Sanford gave an excellent performance as Mrs. Malaprop, one of the most famous female characters ever created for the theater. Dr. Daniel E. Cashman, director of the play,' explains that the word “malapropism” is derived from her name, and her predilection for misusing the English language. Stephen Everett did a fine job as Sir Lucius ©’Trigger, Mrs. Maiaprop’s principal suitor. Everett recently completed tour with the national comany of Marat/Sade, and has also apeared with Cyril Ritchard, Richard Chamberlain, and other noted-performers. Tom Jennings and Johanna Lawrence both gave good performances as Fag and Lydia Languish. Miss Lawrence portrayed the part of Lydia Languish, the fickle love interest of Captain Jack Absolute, played by Dean Santoro. Mr. Jennings had the part of Fag, a ridiculous servant who seemed to think that he was perfect. Pauline Elliott played Lucy, the scheming maid. Lucy was becoming rich fast by “playing dumb”

Safety Hints Given For Boat Repairs Let not the prospect of carefree days of boating go up in smoke this summer. If you plan to renovate or build a craft, the American Insurance Association cautions that varnishes, paints and paint removers are both flammable and explosive and should be used outdoors. Keep lighted cigarettes and open flames away from these materials, the association warns. The association suggests that you have available an approved and fully charged fire extinguisher for use in the event of fire. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Berkeypile of Milford spent the Fourth of July with Mr. and Mrs. Wade Mishler of Milford at their trailer which is located at Bair lake, Mich.
Use Life Jacket Youngsters should wear life jackets whenever they are on or around the water. Although many are excellent swimmers, the shock of suddenly tumbling into the water can cause them to panic. If this happens, the life jacket will provide ample support, floating a youngster on his back with his head and face clear of the water. There should be a life preserver or buoyant seat cushion aboard for every adult passenger in the boat.

‘LIKE MAKING HAY’ — This pile of weeds that piled up on the east shcre of Syracuse Lake is what prompted Dr. Donald R. Hinton to tell members of the Syracuse Lake Property Owners’ Association Saturday night it “was like making hay” to clear his beach front over the week end. The weeds were the result of a weed cutting operation on the lake earlier last week. The heaviest concentration of weeds were in~front cf the Hinton cottage and the John Nixon cottage at 88 and 90 East Shore Drive.
and district 3, Tom Leer. An interesting and enlightening talk was given by Roy Taylor, South Bend city engineer. He addressed his remarks to the knotty pollution problem and to the weed problem on Syracuse lake. He was introduced by Frank Putt. A discussion followed concerning mowing weeds on the lake. Dr. Den Hinton, a resident of the east side of the lake, said he had “three days of pitching hay”. He said he had from three to six inches of weeds on his pier when he came to the lake on Thursday. The wind, he said, had apparently blown the weeds to his shore. Member Frank Ridenour said he had confidence in the group’s board of directors to continue its search fcr ways to curtain or eliminate completely the growth of weeds in Syracuse lake. Friday Scramble Play At South Shore A total of 52 men and women participated in the Friday scramble with H. Caudill, S. Reed, P. Kerlin and L. Harper winning with 5 under par 31. Several teams tied with second place honors with a score of 33. A buffet dinner followed play.
