Letters To The Editor
What To Do About Taxes
Dear Editor: There are many reasons for the rise in taxes —- but there are also many things that can be done to help hold the line or even help to lower them. Not many people in Syracuse or Turkey Creek Township realize, for instance, that their fire department cost more than $4,000 the first quarter of this year or nearly double a year ago. Why and what does this mean tax wise? Say you burn trash and leave it unattended — the fire spreads — so you call the fire department. This can be avoided, but wasn’t, so from $65 to S9O plus the wear and tear on the equip-
Fight... Don't Switch
Dear Editor: It is seldom that I would be writing a letter to the editor concerning a political issue, but I feel at this time there is an issue facing the voters of Kosciusko county that requires some discussion. There is a great deal of talk that Republican voters intend to ask for Democrat ballots in the May 7 election. Their intent would be to vote against Senator

ment. You will say — but this doesn’t happen very often. It did happen more than 10 times the first quarter of this year, or nearly SI,OOO for putting out fires that could have been avoided. Now there is another expense which could be curtailed, that is first aid runs. I know that ambulance service prices have been raised. But if you call the first aid instead of your local ambulance service you save maybe as much as S3O or $35 but at a cost to the taxpayer of S6O to S9O depending on how many volunteers answered the call. A real need for first aid is good, and we do have a fine trained first aid group, but one must be sura that
Kennedy. The American democratic system certainly permits this, but my concern is for our local Republican candidates who are in a fight for their lives to gain the nomination of their party. A switch of party is not only a vote against Senator Kennedy but more importantly a vote against our Kosciusko county candidates. I think particularly of Will Irwin, who is battling a St. Joe county machine pditici-
held. A donation to the cancer fund was approved and a report of a member in the hospital given. There were 17 members and five guests, Mr. and Mrs. Auer, Mrs. Vivian Priddy, Mrs. Robert Wilkerson and Mrs. Fred Johnson present. The next meeting will be May 9 with Mrs. James Hamman and Mrs. Edith Todd as hostesses. Games were played with white elephant gifts as prizes. Sunday’s Lesson To Be Taken From Psalms “Everlasting Punishment” is the subject of this week’s Bible lesson to be read in all Christian Science churches this Sunday. The Golden Text from Psalms sets the theme: “Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: . . . Surely he shall not be moved forever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance”. ■Hie Bible lesson also includes passages from “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy, among which is the following: “Mortals move onward towards good or evil as time glides on. If mortals are not progressive, past failures will be repeated until all wrong work is effaced or rectified. If at present satisfied with wrong-do-ing, we must learn to loath it. If at present content with idleness, we must become dissatisfied with it”. SYRACUSE LOCALS Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bookwood and son of near Chicago spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Bill S. Betes and son Bob at Syracuse. Mrs. Blanche Levingson of Indianapolis called on Mrs. Estelle Swartz at Syracuse last Wednesday afternoon.

first aid other than that you can do yourself is needed. Many times people have said, if I had stopped ter think I could have rushed the person to the doctor mys’lf. Most doctors will be glad to take care of such cases at once. We paid out $65 on one call when all that was done was to take a pill out of the man’s pocket and put it under his tongue. These are only two ways — there are many more. When you do all you can to help reduce expense you help to hold your taxes in line. Yours, W. F. Calnon Clerk-Treasurer
