Wawasee High School Athletes Hold Meeting
Next year’s Wawasee high school athletes met in the Syracuse gym last Saturday at 1:30 p.m. There were approximately 140 boys and many fathers at the meeting. Principal Henry Smith welcomed all the boys to the first Wawasee athletic meeting and told them what was expected of them as Wawasee Warrior athletes and hoped they would meet the challpnge. Mr. Smith then intro*duced the Wawasee coaches to the boys. Athletic director Eldon Ummel explained to the boys that the consolidation into one high school does not mean the need for less athletes, but just the opposite. The school will need many more athletes to be able to expand the sports program to eight varsity sports next year. The school will offer two sports in the fall — football and cross country. Winter sports will consist of basketball and wrestling. (Swimming will be added later — maybe next season.) Golf, track, tennis and baseball ■will be offered in the spring with baseball continuing thru the summer. The corporation needs 10 or 11 coaches to fill the 21 coaching positions at Wawasee high school Wawasee athletic handbooks were given to the boys. They are to use them as their guide. The handbook covers the Wawasee Warrior philosophy, code of conduct, training rules, eligibility, care of equipment, athletic trips, practice regulations and the award system. Practice May 6 Baseball coaches Bill Dorsey, Mike Kurtz and Tom Jones met with the boys that are interested in playing baseball this summer. The' boys were informed the first practice will be Monday, May 6. Athletic director Ummel met with the cross country boys. Since the cross country coach has not been hired to date he took the names and addresses of th? interested boys so the coach could get in touch with them next August. Basketball coaches Vernon Zurcher, Mike Kurtz and JerryMinton met with the boys that ar? interested in playing basketball next season. Football coach?s Don Storey. Terry Frank and Gary Schneck met with the football players. All of the players were measured for helmets. The coaches of the other sports will meet with the boys after school starts next fall.
