Syracuse Basketball Coach Kenneth D. Workman Resigns
Kenneth D. Workman, head basketball coach at Syracuse high school for the past three years, announced his resignation from the school corporation in a letter written this week to superintendent Don H. Arnold. Workman’s letter follows: “Please consider this my resignation from the Lakeland Community School Corporation effective at the end of the current school year. “I would express my appreciation for the opportunities, challenges and pleasure of working with the students and faculty of the Syracuse high school and the total Syracuse community during the past three years.” Official action has not yet been taken by the school board as we go to press. Such action is expected to come at the next meeting. Lee sentenced Arnold Garza — SIOO fine, six month suspended sentence and placed on probation for a period not to exceed six months. 1:40 p.m. (SPD) — Sheriff of Kosciusko called with message to Turtle Bay. 3:43 p.m. (SPD) - Called to Wawasee Laundromat. Car hit building. 2:40 p.m. (SPD) — Run a check on a party. 3:05 p.m. (SPD) i— Received complaint on stolen jacket. 3:08 p.m. (MPD) — Kosciusko advised they had received call from Pennsylvania railroad that Spanish children were putting railroad spikes and plates on rails east of stop light in Milford. Checked same. 4:22 p.m. (MPD) — Mrs. Chapman called and wanted to know when the next west 'bound Pennsylvania train would arrive in Warsaw. Contacted Warsaw. Advised 7:04 p.m. Gave Mrs. Chapman the information. 4:50 p.m. (SPD) — Stopped John Nisslev for bad mufflers. 6:30 p.m. (SPD) — Picked up Sammy Crider for Elkhart county sheriff. 7:15 p.m. . (MPD) — Went to Warsaw city court on Valenti Valdez, Carl Knisley and David Hernandez. Knisley pled guilty to driving with no operator’s license and was fined a total of $19.25. Hernandez pled guilty to disorderly conduct and was fined $47 and given a 60-day suspended sentence to the state farm. Valdez pled guilty to disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and public intoxication and was fined $25 on each charge arxLgiven a six month suspended sentence. 10:35 p.m. (SPD) — Called to accident at 112 W. E. Long drive. Saturday, April 20 12:11 a.m. (MPD) — Received call from Warsaw police department on car headed north on SR 15. Driver believed to be intoxicated. He had run two cars off the road. 12:20 a.m. (MPD) — Intercepted car at SR 15 and Emeline street and arrested Nelson Reese for driving under the influence. 1:05 a.m. (MPD) — Booked Nelson Reese at county jail. 3 a.m. (SPD) — Found door open. 4:14 a.m. (SPD) — Contacted watchman at Liberty Coach. 9 a.m. (MPD) — Went to JP Chris Koher’s court city hall Syracuse and Water Gressley appeared. He entered a plea of guilty on a charge of driving with no operator’s license and was fined $23.25. 9:30 a.m. (SPD) — Had several bad checks handed to the department. * 10 a.m. (SPD) — Went to Warsaw to pick up James Hepler from county jail and place him in court. She was found and turned over to parents. 9:30 p.m. (SPD) — Called to Medusa street. Family trouble. Death Mrs. Charles Smith Funeral services were held at 2-:30 p.m. Sunday in the North Webster Christian church for Mrs. Charles P. (Eva M.) Smith, 77, of r 1 North Webster. Rev. Clayton Foraker officiated. Burial was in the Salem cemetery at Wilmot. Mrs. Smith died at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Goshen hospital where she had just been admitted. The cause of death was listed as due to complications. She had been in failing health for some time but death was sudden and unexpected. Survivors include two sons, Wilford Smith of North Webster and Donald Godsell of Cincinati, Ohio; one step-son, Harold Smith of Hammond; one foster son, Philip Scott of Goshen; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Helen) Metzger of Fort Wayne and Mrs. Bert (Viola) Bockhoven of Chicago Heights, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Roy Scott of Cordalema, Idaho. She was preceded in death by two sons, Keith and Kenneth Smith.

The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Karesh of Syracuse and Mrs. Mildred Pie of Itasca, 111. A great-grandmother is Mrs. Emma Wright of Alma, 111.
