Dave Gonsorek On All-Star Team
Dave Gonsorek, senior at Wawasee Preparatory, Syracuse, was named to the Fort WayneSouth Bend Diocesan All-Star team. The special team was made up of the best players from the seven diocesan high schools in the area, including Central Catholic, Fort Wayne, and St. Joe’s, South Bend. The honored players were feted March 19 at Warsaw, at a special awards banquet sponsored by Our Sunday Visitor, the diocesan weekly newspaper. Besides top place on the Wawasee Prep line up, Gonsorek was one of the top scorfrs in Kosciusko county. The son of Mr.,and Mrs. Z. Gonsorek, Michigan City, Dave is an honor - roll student and the winner of seven school letters and two of the school’s highly coveted star awards. A Purdue scholarship winner, he intends to attend the Michigan City extension this fall and later major in industrial management. County Coaches To Meet April 1 Coach Ken Workman of Syracuse, president of the county coaches association, has called a meeting for April 1 at 7:30 in the Pierceton high school building. To be discussed will be the county track meets, both high school and junior high; the county golf meet; the future of the organization; officers; summer baseball and other business. 200 Dads And Daughters Have Date The walls of the scout cabin bulged when approximately 200 dads and daughters met on Friday evening, March 22, for the Camp Fire Girls “date with dad’ as part of their observance of Camp Fire birthday week. . Each girl took lunch in a gaily trimmed box which she shared with her father at tables decorated with flowers and miscellany of mechanical objects. “Welcome, dad” in big red letters across one end of the room greeted the dads as they entered. Camp Fire symbols and insignia were displayed on the walls of the room against a background of 'white. Rev. August Lundquist of the Syracuse Methodist church gave the invocation. Mrs. Arthur Folger, leader of the Wa Ki Ya group, was in charge of the program. She introduced Mrs. Raymond Wilson, chairman of the Syracuse Camp Fire Association. Mrs. Wilson spoke briefly, expressing her appreciation of the interest shown in Camp Fire by those present. The Camp Fire program, she said, has but one object, and that is, “to help girls grow.” Suggestions for making the program more vital are always welcome, she said. The girls of Mrs. Folger’s group presented a puppet show in seven scenes, each scene portraying one of the seven crafts of Camp Fire. The seven crafts are: Business, home, sports and games, creative arts, frontiers, citizenship and out-doors. A conservation film “We Are On Our Way” shown by Rev. Lundquist concluded the evening. Mrs. Chet Elder and Mrs. Michael Mignery were in charge of decorations. Mrs. Jim Cox, Mrs. Wendel Shank and Mrs. Clayton Cough were in charge of food arrangements. The Tan Wapo Ka girls, Mrs. Bill Darr and Mrs. Raymond Wilson were clean-up committee. Farewell For Mrs. Campbell Mrs. George Bryan, r 4 Syracuse. entertained at four tables of bridge last Wednesday honoring Mrs. Raymond , Campbell, who will be moving from Syracuse to Sarasota, Fla., soon. A dessert was served by the hostess who presented Mrs. Campbell with a gift. Winners were Mrs. Jack Wells, first; Mrs. Helen Musser, second: Mrs. Campbell, third 1 ; Mrs. Ellie Blakesley. fourth; and Mrs. William Brammer, travel. Mrs. Otis Tucker has returned to her home at Memphis, Tenn., following a visit in the home of her nephew, Peter A. Blue, and Mrs. Blue at Syracuse Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Emory Guy, Syracuse, visited in the home of her brother, Harry Smith, and family at New Paris on Sunday. Mrs. Guy’s nephew, James Lee Smith, has returned from a tour of duty in Viet Nam.

TO WED IN AUGUST — Mr. and Mrs. Harmon W. Liggett, r 5 Valparaiso, announces the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Carol to Ronald V. Kramer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald V. Kramer, 127 North Shore drive, Syracuse. Miss Liggett is a graduate of Valparaiso high school and the St. Mary Mercy hospital school of nursing at Gary and is presently employed in the Porter Memorial hospital at Valparaiso. .Her fiance is a graduate of Syracuse high school and has served four years with the U.S. navy. He is currently a student at Valparaiso Technical Institute. The couple will repeat their vows on August 17 in Immanuel Lutheran church at Valparaiso. Warriors To See 'Fantasy In Brass* Saturday After putting in from two to eight hours of practice a week this winter in preparation for shows at two home basketball games and to keep in shape for parades and competition this coming summer — the Wawasee Warriors Junior Drum and Bugle Corps members of Syracuse are looking forward "with great anticipation to this Saturday when they will travel to Chicago to see ‘Fantasy in Brass” put on at the Civic Opera House by 10 of the top dr.,m and bugle corps of the nation. About two-thirds of the corps fe expected to attend. This is not only an outing for the group but members will get new ideas on presentation of music and formations. The Warriors will take part in the Syracuse Civic Night Friday. The “Night” is being sponsored by the Syracuse Business and Professional Women. The corps members are also selling tickets on a 3*2 hp Charger Mini Bike which is on display in the American Legion hall window. The project is expected to close the gap in their uniform fund. CADET CITED FOR EXCELLENCE Cadet Pvt. Kirk Jobson, son of Mrs. Eldon D. Musser, Syracuse, a sophomore at Roosevelt Military Academy, Aledo, 111., was cited for excellence at Special ceremonies honoring award winners for the third quarter of the school year. Syracuse Youth Awarded Basketball Letter Fitzhugh Turner 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fitzhugh Turner, Jr., Syracuse, is among the nine students in Union college, Schenectady, N. Y.. awarded basketball letters for this season. The team completed its season with an 8-12 record. Mi 4 . Turner, a senior, is a science major, and a graduate of Minneehaug high school, Wilbraham, Mass. Methodist Elect Board Os Trustees Members of the Milford Methodist church at their fourth quarterly conference elected Vernon Stutzman, James Cecil and Harlan Wuthrich to their board of trustees. Other board of trustee members are Robert Brown, Archibald E. Baumgartner, Joe Gerencser, C. D. Barnes, Lawrence Myers and Robert Ruch. Rhonda Graff’s Birthday A birthday dinner was given in honor of Rhonda Graff Saturday by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Graff of Milford. Guests were Rick Graff, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Van Buren township trustee John Davidsen and his advisory board, meeting at the Milford fire station Tuesday night, voted to purchase a three-quarter ton Chevrolet pick-up truck from McCormick Motors, Inc., Nappanee, for a base bid of $2,848. Options they accepted included 8-ply 9:50x16*2 mud and snow tires for S4O, and a 250 h.p., 327 cu. - in. V-8 engine with 12 inch clutch for s3l, making the total price for the unit $2,919. Other bidders were C. S. Myers of Milford with a bid of $2.939.72, and Sharp Hardware with a bid of $3,350 with power steering on an International truck and $3,245 without power steering. Assistant fire chief Oliver Replogle said the fire department has purchased a pumper unit to fit onto the new truck which carries a 200-gallon water tank. The unit will be used for quick runs such as fighting grass fires, and long-distant runs where it could arrive at the scene of a fire sooner than the regular fire fighting equipment. INVOLVED IN ACCIDENT NEAR ELWOOD Mrs. Jack Warren, r 4 Syracuse, was involved in an accident near Elwood Friday while returning home from Indianapolis. The car slid off the road, hitting a cement post, jumped an embankment and hit a fence. There was extensive damage to the car. Passengers with her were Mrs. Ed Kinney of Indianapolis, Mary Westerman of Milford, and Mark Warren. No one was injured. Bill Perrys Return From Florida Trip Mr. and Mrs. Bill Perry of Milford returned to their home on Henry street Tuesday evening after spending several weeks in Florida. After a two-week visit at Sarasota with hi’s sister, Mrs. Ruth Jane Potts, they drove to Fort Walton Beach tc visit their daugher, Mrs. C. E. Rogers, and three grandchildren. Attend Ceremony While there they were present at a ceremony at Elgin air force base, Hurburt Field, where a posthumous presentation was made by General Corbin to Major C. E. Rogers, their son-in-law, who was lost on a bombing mission in Viet Nam on May 4, 1967. He was awarded the United States silver star medal for gallantry in action, the bronze star medal for meritorious service, the air medal with first and second oak cluster for meritorious achievement and the purple heart for wounds suffered in battle; also, two Viet Nam medals — one the national orclr of Viet Nam for courageous combatants and the gallantry cross with palm for courage. The Perrys stated the northwind was stronger than the south sun but at that it was warmer than Milford. SUNDAY GUESTS OF REV. AND MRS. Jr. Merry Maidens 4-H Club Meets The Junior Merry Maidens 4-H club of Milford met on March 16 in the fire station to give demonstrations. Sherree Arthur, Cynthia Rapp, Colleen Beer, Susan Nyc'e, Brenda Davis, Sandra Gerencser, Beth Beer, Jeanine Farrel, Alice Gunden, Ann Kaiser and Ellen Hoover gave their demonstrations. The rest of the club members will give demonstrations on April 20 in the fire station. Syracuse Locals Mrs. Ray Wogoman, Lake Wawasee, went to Chicago Friday to visit in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Tom Joyce, Mr. Joyce and children. Mrs. Eleanor Silveus of "Cromwell is convalescing from recent surgery in the home of her son, the Ronald Silveuses, of Lake Wawasee. Mr. and Mrs. William Treat and Albert Treat of South Bend were at Syracuse Thursday on business. Mr. and Mrs. Bill S. Betes, Syracuse, spent the week end at Chicago in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Juliifi Swanson.
ONE CAR MISHAPS OVER WEEK END A car operated by Robert Carlson, 18, of Syracuse, struck a telephone pole and fence on road 13A, three miles south of Syracuse, at 1:17 a.m. Sunday. Damage to the car was $175. Deputy Jerry Johnson, who investigated, estimated SIOO damage to the pole and $55 to the fence owned by M. L. Kleinknight. Second Accident Jan Bean, 22, Syracuse, escaped injury at 2:05 am. Sunday when his auto skidded on slick pavement and struck a fence three and one-half miles east of Syracuse. Syracuse police officer Dale Sparklin and deputy Jerry Johnson, who investigated, listed damage to,the car at S9OO and SSO damage to the fence at the Chinese Gardens. Welding Shop Held At North Webster Albert Guy Smith, industrial arts teacher at North Webster high school, has enrolled in a 20week course in electronics training for teachers at Howard W. Sands Technical Institute at Fort Wayne. This teacher has also organized a shop welding club at North Webster which meets for two hours on every Tuesday and Thursday evening, 7 to 9. The enrollment is about 12 students. Everyone is welcome. The boys are also permitted to work on their bicycles and lawnmower engines. UNEMPLOYMENT CLAIMS DECREASE 4 PER CENT Indiana’s unemployment insurance claims total decreased by nearly four per cent last week, to 32,993 from 34,253 the week before. Joe E. Lavaux, acting director of the Indiana Employment Security Division, said that new layoffs occurring during the week were mainly small scale and short time. About eight per cent fewer persons filed initial claims. - Mr. Lavaux said there was a drop of nearly 1,000 in claims from persons out of work a week or more. With the improving weather, outside industries, such as construction and quarrying, were recalling their employees. Mr. and Mrs. Lionel Bates of Villa Park, 111., spent the week end with his parents, the Frank Bateses, at Syracuse Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Steve Crow and daughter of r 3 Syracuse had as guests recently, Mr. and Mrs. James Maggart of Cromwell.

Court News Bankruptcy Filed in Federal District Court Bankruptcy has been filed by Robert Bertram Trolson, r 3 Syracuse, in federal district court listing debts of $8,060.62 and assets of $1,497.
